uanti sportivi avrebbero mai sognato di vedere il numero uno del
tennis mondiale impegnato su un
campo genovese? Eppure Roger Federer,
considerato da tutti come il più grande di
sempre, capace di trionfare a Wimbledon
per cinque volte di fila, vincitore di oltre
30 tornei di cui 15 del Grande Slam, saluterà il pubblico proprio a Genova, città di
tradizione e passione tennistiche di antichissima data.
Il sogno probabilmente diventerà realtà
proprio in questo settembre trasformato
nel mese di “Genova capitale del tennis”.
Sul centrale dello stadio Beppe Croce di
Valletta Cambiaso, che per l’occasione
verrà ampliato con tre tribune e oltre
3.000 seggiolini aggiuntivi, andranno infatti in scena l’incontro di Coppa Davis tra
Italia e Svizzera, dal 18 al 20, e il rinnovato Aon Open Challenger del circuito Atp,
al via il 6. Due tornei prestigiosi, uno dopo l’altro: tra gare e allenamenti oltre tre
settimane ininterrotte di voleè e palline
tra le linee bianche del campo.
Questa “rispolverata” internazionale della racchetta ligure si deve agli sforzi della società organizzatrice Genoa Open
2003 e soprattutto ai due principali circoli tennistici di Genova, Park e Tennis
Club, i promotori più attivi del salto di
qualità del Genoa Open targato 2009.
Arrivato con successo
alla settima edizione, grazie ai nuovi
sponsor il torneo di
Valletta Cambiaso è
passato quest’anno dai 25 ai
100.000 dollari di montepremi. Tanto per continuare con
i numeri: da quest’anno il
vincitore si metterà in tasca
12.300 euro, il finalista oltre 7.000, i semifinalisti
4.200, i vincitori del
doppio 5.000, e anche chi arriva appena agli ottavi
1.500. L’aumento del budget ha
portato l’evento

Gran parte delle speranze azzurre nella sfida di Valletta
Cambiaso sono sulle spalle (e
sulla racchetta) di Fabio Fognini, attualmente il più promettente tennista italiano del
circuito internazionale e ultimo vincitore dell’Open Challenger genovese. Classe 1987,
l’atleta di casa è nato a Sanremo ma vive ad Arma di Taggia
e si allena spesso a Barcellona.

ow many sports fans have dreamt
of watching the top tennis player
in the world work his magic on the
Genoa courts? Roger Federer, considered
by all to be the best ever, winning Wimbledon five times running, and another
30 tournaments including 15 Grande
Slams, will greet the public at Genoa, a
city whose tradition and passion for tennis dates back to times of old.
The dream probably becomes reality this
September, “Genoa - the tennis capital of
the world”. The centre court of the Beppe
Croce stadium in Valletta Cambiaso, to
which two stands with over 3,000 additional seats have been added for the occasion, will play host to the Davis Cup
playoffs between Italy and Switzerland,
from the 18th to the 20th, with the new
Aon Open Challenger of the Atp circuit,
on the 6th.
Two prestigious tournaments, one right
after the other: with the matches and
training this will mean more than three
weeks of forehands, backhands and balls
rocketing from one side of the court to
the other.
We must thank the organizers of the
Genoa Open 2003 for this international
“show” of Ligurian racquetry, and in particular the two biggest tennis clubs in
Genoa, the Park and the Tennis Club, promoting this leap of faith into the big time
for the 2009 Genoa Open. The Open has
successfully reached its 7th edition, and
with new sponsors the Valletta Cambiaso
tournament has upped the stakes from
the usual 25 to 100,000 dollars of prize
money.
A few figures: this year the winner will
pocket 12.300 euros, the finalist over
7.000, the semi-finalists 4.200, the winners of the doubles 5.000, and even quarterfinalists will be getting 1.500. This
healthy budget has made the Genoese
event the third biggest in Italy, and for
that particular week the richest tournament in the world. Players of the very
highest level will be taking to the centre
court, the top eleven of the first fifty in
the official ranking.

Chissà che non possa succedere lo stesso
anche a Genova, in quello che sarà una
sorta di spareggio per entrare nella serie A
del tennis mondiale, il World Group. Opposta agli azzurri di Davis c’è una delle
nazionali più forti del circuito, che oltre a
Federer può schierare il numero 19 del
mondo Wawrinka e il doppio campione
olimpico, ma il sanremese Fabio Fognini e
compagni potranno contare questa volta
anche sui corsi e ricorsi della storia sportiva: l’ultima volta della Davis allo stadio
del tennis di Albaro fu nel 1998, quando
l’India fu sconfitta 4-1 e per le racchette
azzurre Sanguinetti, Narciso e Gaudenzi
iniziò una serie di vittorie che li portò verso una storica finale. b
