Abstract (English)
To develop the European dimension of sport the European Commission
prioritized the protection of young athletes’ sport and educational rights and the
implementation of social inclusion and equal opportunities in and through sport.
Due to an inadequate cooperation between bodies responsible for sport and
academics, demanding training and competition schedules often oblige elite
athletes to reduce their time devoted to education or to dropout sport. In addition,
the socio-cultural context strongly influences their career transitions, resulting in
various typologies of career paths across Europe. Moreover, a persistent male
hegemony
in
sports
careers
was
observed,
determining
a
significant
underrepresentation of women in sport organizations. Althoug researchers, sport
executives and governments showed growing interests and awareness toward the
dual career and the promotion of equal opportunities in Europe, there is still a lack
of best practices in all the Member States, including Italy. Furthermore, studentathletes’ orientations and motivations toward the dual career must be further
investigated, as well as critical barriers that obstacle female career advancement in
sport careers. Therefore, this research project addressed these issues by means of
psychometric instruments.
The studies aimed at evaluating student athletes’ motivations toward the dual
career in Italian and European student-athletes demonstrated the need for adapted
tools in relation to the socio-cultural environment. The studies on gender issues in
careers related to sport demonstrated that both female sport managers and
university professors perceive a lack of equal opportunities in access and
progression. In particular, persisting male hegemony, stereotypes and difficulties in
reconciling work and family commitments continue to be perceives as obstacles for
the career advancement of women.
In conclusion, this research project proved the complexity of a comprehensive
understanding of dual career and equal opportunities issues in the European sport

area. Results may help to develop long-term strategies to support athletes’ dual
careers and to implement equal opportunities in sport careers.

Sommario (Italiano)
Di recente l’obiettivo comunitario di sviluppare la dimensione europea dello
sport ha dato priorità alle pari opportunità nelle carriere sportive ed al diritto dei
giovani atleti di combinare la pratica sportiva d’élite con la formazione
accademica. Tuttavia, la persistente egemonia maschile nelle organizzazioni
sportive e nelle carriere legate allo sport determina una sottorappresentazione delle
donne nello sport. Inoltre, i crescenti impegni legati al perseguimento di una
prestazione sportiva d’eccellenza e la mancanza di cooperazione tra organizzazioni
sportive e istituzioni accademiche obbligano spesso gli atleti d’élite a ridurre il
tempo dedicato alla formazione scolastica/universitaria o ad abbandonare lo sport
competitivo.
Sebbene ricercatori, dirigenti sportivi e governi abbiano manifestato un
crescente interesse e consapevolezza delle problematiche legate alla doppia carriera
(i.e., la combinazione di sport di alto livello e dell’istruzione superiore) e alla
promozione delle pari opportunità in ambito sportivo, permane una sostanziale
carenza di informazione che possa determinare buone pratiche negli Stati Membri,
inclusa l’Italia. Pertanto, il presente progetto di ricerca ha avuto l’obiettivo di
studiare tali problematiche attraverso strumenti psicometrici.
Gli studi sulla motivazione degli student-atleti italiani ed europei verso la
doppia carriera hanno dimostrato che nel panorama europeo è necessario
considerare i diversi sistemi socio-culturali per poter comprendere le scelte di
carriera degli studenti-atleti. Gli studi focalizzati sulle problematiche di genere
nelle carriere legate allo sport hanno mostrato che sia nel management sportivo sia
nell’ambiente universitario legato allo sport (i.e., Facoltà di Scienze Motorie)
italiani persistono problematiche che condizionano l’accesso e la progressione di
carriera delle donne. In particolare, la persistente egemonia maschile, gli stereotipi
di genere e le difficoltà di conciliare impegni professionali e familiari continuano a
rappresentare ostacoli rilevanti per la progressione di carriera delle donne.

In conclusione, il presente progetto di ricerca ha confermato la complessità di
una comprensione globale delle problematiche relative la doppia carriera e le pari
opportunità nel panorama sportivo italiano ed europeo. I risultati ottenuti
potrebbero essere utili allo sviluppo di strategie a lungo termine per il sostegno
della doppia carriera di studenti atleti e per implementare le pari opportunità nelle
carriere in ambito sportivo.
