Capraia e Limite
Montelupo Fiorentino
Montelupo è la città della ceramica. La storia di questa
fiorente attività è tutta documentata dal Museo della
Ceramica, che costituisce una delle principali mete da
visitare, insieme al Museo Archeologico, alla Prioria
di San Lorenzo, del XIII secolo, alla pala botticelliana
della chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista e alla villa
Medicea l’Ambrogiana, visibile solo dall’esterno.
Sulla riva destra dell’Arno è il comune di Capraia e
Limite. Capraia conserva ancora le caratteristiche
di borgo fortificato medioevale, mentre Limite fu un
importante centro fluviale. Qui si visitano il Centro
Espositivo della Cantieristica e del Canottaggio e il
parco archeologico di Montereggi, che documenta le
origini etrusche dell’abitato.
Montelupo is the city of ceramics. The history of this
flourishing activity is documented in the Museum
of Ceramics which is one of the principal sites to be
visited, along with the Museum of Archaeology, the
13th century Priory of San Lorenzo, the Botticelli
altarpiece in the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista
and the Medicean Villa l’Ambrogiana, which can only
been viewed from the outside.
The municipality of Capraia and Limite lies on the right
bank of the river Arno. Capraia still preserves the features of a fortified medieval
hamlet, whereas Limite used to be an important river port. Here it is possible to
visit the “Shipbuilding and Rowing Exhibition Center”, as well as the Montereggi
archaeological park which documents the town’s Etruscan origins.

di cui si può visitare la casa ad
Anchiano, raggiungibile a piedi
percorrendo la “strada verde”
(durata: 30-40 minuti). Nella rocca
del Castello e nella Palazzina
Uzielli è il Museo Leonardiano,
con modelli dai disegni del maestro, mentre le cantine del castello ospitano il
Museo Ideale Leonardo Da Vinci.
Vinci is most famous for being the birthplace of Leonardo. It is possible to visit his
house at Anchiano which can be reached on foot by following the “green road” (30 - 40 minute walk).
The Museo Leonardiano (Museum of Leonardo da Vinci), featuring models designed by the Maestro
himself, is located in the Rocca or Castle-Fortress and the Palazzina Uzielli, whereas the Museo Ideale
Leonardo Da Vinci (Ideal Museum of Leonardo da Vinci) is situated in the cellars of the castle.

storico merita una visita la splendida
piazza Farinata degli Uberti: qui si trovano
il Palazzo Ghibellino, il Palazzo Pretorio,
la Collegiata di Sant’Andrea, dalla bella
facciata romanica in marmo bianco e verde
e, poco distante, il Museo della Collegiata,
uno dei più antichi e importanti musei
ecclesiastici della Toscana. A Pontorme si
visitano l’antica chiesa di San Michele, che
custodisce una pregevole pala d’altare del
Empoli, the chief town of this vast area, occupies a central position along the river
Arno. Well worth visiting in the town centre is the splendid Piazza Farinata degli
Uberti: here you can find Palazzo Ghibellino, Palazzo Pretorio, the Collegiata di
Sant’Andrea, with its fine green and white marble Romanesque façade and, just a few steps away, the
Museum of the Collegiata, one of Tuscany’s oldest and most important ecclesiastical museums. Also
worthy of mention is the ancient Church of San Michele with its valuable altarpiece by Pontormo, as
well as the artist’s house, in the nearby village of Pontorme.

Situato su un poggio detto Salamartano, Fucecchio
ospita importanti edifici civili e religiosi: la
Collegiata, l’Abbazia di San Salvatore, il Palazzo
Montanelli Della Volta e il Palazzo Corsini, sede del
Museo di Fucecchio (con tre sezioni: archeologica,
d’arte sacra e naturalistica), all’interno del suggestivo
Parco Corsini.
Situated in a hilly area, Cerreto Guidi is famous
for the Medicean villa which was built in
1564 on the ruins of a Castle-Fortress owned
by the Guidi family. The villa houses the
Museum of Hunting and Country Traditions
and is connected to the Parish Church of San
Leonardo, which contains a baptismal font
attributed to Giovanni della Robbia, as well as
various 16th century paintings.

Centro spirituale di Castelfiorentino è il
santuario di Santa Verdiana, una chiesa
barocca e l’annesso Museo di Arte Sacra,
che ospita tavole dal XIII al XVI sec. Il
Centro Comunale d’Arte conserva alcuni
importanti affreschi (e sinopie) di Benozzo
Gozzoli.
Montaione si affaccia su uno dei panorami più
suggestivi della Toscana ed è un importante
centro del “turismo verde”. Il Palazzo
Pretorio del XIV sec. ospita il Museo Civico,
con un’interessante sezione archeologica. E’
molto rinomata la località San Vivaldo, con
la “Gerusalemme” fondata da Fra’ Tommaso
da Firenze: 17 cappelle rinascimentali con
altrettanti gruppi di statue in terracotta, che
riproducono episodi della vita di Gesù.
The spiritual centre of Castelfiorentino
consists of the Shrine of Santa Verdiana, a
Baroque church and the adjacent Museum
of Religious Art which contains paintings
dating from the 13th to the 16th century.
The Municipal Art Centre includes a
number of important frescoes (and sinopias)
by Benozzo Gozzoli.
Montaione looks out onto one of the most
beautiful panoramas in Tuscany and is an important centre for “green
tourism”. The 14th century Palazzo Pretorio hosts the Civic Museum which
has an interesting archaeological section. The locality of San Vivaldo, with
its “Jerusalem” created by Fra’ Tommaso da Firenze, is particularly famous:
here visitors can admire seventeen 16th century chapels containing groups of
terracotta statues depicting episodes from the life of Christ.

Occupying a central position with respect to world famous
cities of art such as Florence, Pisa and Siena, the Empolese
Valdelsa district enthusiastically welcomes anyone wishing
to visit this area by train or bus. This publication suggests
a number of itineraries using the bus and train which have
been selected to minimize waiting times, with arrivals and
departures programmed to give you a suitable amount of time
to visit the various localities. “Lascia a casa l’auto e scopri
l’Empolese Valdeldsa in treno e in autobus – Leave your car
at home and use the train and bus to discover the Empolese
Valdelsa district” is basically an invitation to discover
another, more environmentally friendly travel dimension
which offers a slower, shared experience, where at last the
visitor is allowed the curiosity and the time to observe, at first
hand, people going about their everyday lives, to admire a
particularly beautiful landscape, to enjoy a sunset.
The Empolese Valdelsa district truly has much to offer those
who know how to contemplate their surroundings properly,
without hurrying.

Montespertoli overlooks the Chianti district and has
given its name to a Wine Trail where two DOCG wines
are produced: Chianti Montespertoli and Chianti Colli
Fiorentini. The town’s strong winemaking vocation has
inspired the creation of the Centre of Wine Culture “I
Lecci”. The Parish Church of San Piero in Mercato, the
current home of the Museum of Religious Art, is located
around 2 Km from the centre of Montespertoli.

The old town centre of Certaldo has maintained
its medieval appearance. Of all of the buildings,
the most interesting are perhaps the towerhouses, the Palazzo Pretorio and the adjacent
Church of Saints Tommaso and Prospero, now
deconsecrated. Also well worth visiting are
the Church of Saints Jacopo and Filippo (12th
century) and the adjacent Museum of Religious
Art, as well as the famous Giovanni Boccaccio House Museum.

Affacciato ormai sui territori del Chianti, Montespertoli
ha dato il suo nome ad una Strada del Vino dove si
producono due DOCG: il Chianti Montespertoli e il
Chianti Colli Fiorentini. La sua forte vocazione vinicola
ha fornito lo spunto per la creazione del Centro per la
Cultura del Vino “I Lecci”. A circa 2 km dal centro
di Montespertoli è la Pieve di San Piero in Mercato,
attuale sede di un museo di arte sacra.

L’antico centro di Certaldo ha conservato
inalterato il suo aspetto medievale. Di particolare
interesse sono le case-torri, il Palazzo Pretorio
e l’attigua chiesa, oggi sconsacrata, dei Santi
Tommaso e Prospero. Da visitare anche la Chiesa
dei Santi Jacopo e Filippo (XII sec.) e l’attiguo
Museo di Arte Sacra, oltre alla celebre casamuseo di Giovanni Boccaccio.

Gambassi Terme è una località apprezzata
per le sue acque salse. L’antica vocazione
di Gambassi era legata alla produzione
vetraria: la mostra permanente “La
produzione vetraria a Gambassi (secoli
XIII-XVI)” permette di ammirare i prodotti
realizzati in questo arco di tempo. A meno
di 1 km dal centro storico, sull’antico
tracciato della Via Francigena, è la Pieve
