INTERNSHIP VACANCIES: Climate and Governance Programme – Climate and Energy Policy Environmental Economics Programme – Economic Analysis of Environmental Policies Salary: Unsalaried placement with local travel and lunch expenses paid Location: IEEP Brussels office Duration: 3-6 months The Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) is a leading centre for the analysis, understanding and advancement of environmental, agricultural and related policies in Europe. We undertake work for a wide range of clients from the EU institutions, national and regional government departments, agencies, parliamentarians, NGOs and work closely with partners and academics on cutting edge policy research. We currently have internship vacancies within both the Climate and Governance Programme and the Environmental Economics Programmes in our Brussels office, to contribute to a range of research and training projects in the field of EU climate and energy policy, as well as on economic analysis across policy areas Climate and Governance Programme: Our research covers varied aspects of energy and climate policy, focussing on inter alia: evaluating investment in energy efficiency; informing the current debate on EU 2030 energy and climate policy targets, including through guidance for effective governance of Member States’ action on climate change mitigation and energy market integration; and assessing the environmental impact of renewable energy sources. This internship position would be of particular interest to those with some experience of energy and climate policy. However, it would be suitable for anyone with a wider knowledge of environmental policy in relation to energy and climate or a strong interest in developing their understanding in this area. Environmental Economics Programme: Our research covers the green and circular economy, the values of nature and ecosystem services, beyond GDP indicators and accounting and economic analysis – of biodiversity policies, marine litter impacts, and environmental crime. This internship position would be suitable for anyone with a general knowledge of environmental economics. It would be of particular interest to those who aim at applying economic concepts and methods in environmental policy. Internship Description The successful candidate would support the work carried out by the two programmes Climate and Governance Programme and Environmental Economics Programme - and related activities of other teams, where appropriate. Specifically, the work will involve contributions to projects on: Climate and Governance: evaluating investment in energy efficiency and tenders related to environmental governance, including climate and energy policy. Environmental Economics: literature review on health and social benefits of nature, and costs of action and inaction on dealing with marine litter. The successful candidate should expect to work as part of the teams, which will involve: Undertaking literature reviews, data collection and preliminary analysis; Contributing to, and editing, research reports and potentially papers for publication; Contributing to the production of articles, newsletters and policy papers; Contributing to other organisational and administrative tasks as appropriate; Helping to organise workshops and trainings as appropriate. We would prefer candidates who can work five days per week; however, consideration will also be given to applicants wishing to work part time. We are open to flexible time arrangements. University students doing a thesis (eg Masters or PhD) in related areas looking for institutional visits/placements are also welcome to apply. Internships would ideally start on 1st of May 2015, and would be for 3 – 6 months. There is also a possibility to start your internship later (Q3 and Q4 of 2015) so please make sure that you clearly indicate your availability in the motivation letter. Person Specification Interested applicants must: hold a good first degree in at least one relevant subject or have otherwise proven knowledge in the field; have a demonstrated interest in climate and energy policy and wish to pursue a career in these areas; have demonstrated good communication skills, in particular, good written and spoken English and the ability to present technical information in a clear and accessible manner; have a proven record of showing initiative and being flexible with regard to the tasks they are asked to complete; be capable of working independently in a fast-paced small office environment; have good organisational and time management skills; be reliable and capable of paying close attention to detail; and have good computer skills (particularly in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and good command of the internet). Proficiency in another European language is an advantage, however fluent English is essential. Candidates should either be EU citizens or have suitable visa already in place that allows an internship in Belgium. IEEP and its Internship Programme The IEEP internship programme aims to provide internships in order to develop early career progression or change of career and to benefit future career paths. Interns assist the IEEP staff research activities; get practical insights into environmental policy. We commit to provide supervision, coaching and support throughout the internship in order to give graduates valuable work experience and provide advice and support on writing your CV and application forms. While an element of the internship is likely to be administrative in nature, the focus is to provide interns with the opportunity to assist in research projects and report / paper writing, attend meetings with IEEP research staff and contribute to IEEP’s advisory services, where appropriate.
