We wish to inform you that instead of the usual Christmas gift to the participants at the
Christmas Dinner, the Club has devolved the amount of € 300.00 for charity, to help flood
damaged people of the Messina area. The amount has been transferred to the account of Credito
Siciliano, opened on that purpose.

ART
Last December 14th the Art Group members visited the exhibition situated inside the Scuderie del
Quirinale on Botticelli and Filippino Lippi, the latter the son of the more famous Filippo. The reason
for the two painters are linked in this exhibition is that Filippino Lippi was first Botticelli’s pupil, then
his collaborator, later on a competitor. Anyway he was a painter of a certain value operating for the
courts in the second half of the XV century.
The Prof. Ceccarelli spoke to us about the relations between the two painters and the differences
between their works as well. At the end of the visit, he suggested us to go to the Church of Santa Maria
sopra Minerva in Roma and to the Cappella Strozzi in S.Maria Novella in Firenze in order to complete
our knowledge about Filippo Lippi’s production. (L.M.)

An other interesting and pleasant walk in the
gastronomic world of Roma antica, guided by
Nelly Milano, lecturer and hostess of the
meeting, and Vichi Managò, author of the
video clip we saw at the end of the lecture.
Roma Imperiale, “caput mundi”, was no more
pleased with frugal meals based on the
“pulpes” of the republican period, but loved
the magnificent banquets, loved to impress for
the preparation of dishes, enriched by spices
coming from the vast (huge) “ roman world”,
and for the spectacular scenographies that
involved musicians and dancers. The guests,
head covered with garlands of myrtle, bay and
fragrant flowers, which have the function to
prevent the drunkenness, used to eat, lying on
comfortable (!!) triclinaries, while the arbiter
bibendi gave the start signal to the libations.
The menù, offered by the hostess, was not,
perhaps, that one of the famous “Cena di
Trimalcione”, described by Petronio Arbitro in
his “Satyricon”, but it was a summa of
ESCURSION GROUP
The Group Leaders Biancamaria Lucibelli and M.Teresa Tramontana inform that they are
organizing a four days trip to Stockholm (Sweden) next June.
The detailed program will be published in the February Newsletter. We invite all of you to
consider this proposal, which will give us not only the opportunity to know one of the most
attractive cities in North-Europe, but also will allow an other rendez-vous with the members
of the IWC of Stockholm, who have been our guests in Rome in 2005.
LITERATURE
The Literature Group meeting, dedicated to the German writers and famous women, was hosted at the
home of Renate Roth. The conversation was opened by the hostess with the life of Heinrich Von Kleist
and his most important work “The broken jug”, an example of symbolism.
The extraordinary biography of Leni Riefenstahl gave rise to a passionate discussion. The German
delicious delikatessen, offered by Renate, increased our knowledge of the German culture.

MUSIC
The theme, object of the musical afternoon hosted at the home of Francesca Parravano, was
based on “ The soundtrack of the films”. But last time we did not speak only about musical
notes and extraordinary composers, like John Williams or Ennio Morricone( just for
instance). Thanks to the professional skill in the cinema field of Nella Cirinnà, the members of
the group had the opportunity of plunging completely in the cinema world, also behind the
camera, and knowing the tricks, the secrets and the peculiarities of the production of a film.
“The soundtracks do always the fortune of a film”, people say, but the medley of splendid
musics chosen by the two group leaders, from “Blade runner” to “The blow”, from “The
pink panther” to “ Casablanca” from “The God father” to “Gone with the wind” etc. has
given further evidence of this slogan.
The longing notes of “Amarcord” by the great Nino Rota, musical theme of the homonymous
film by Fellini, closed the interesting afternoon, made perfect also thanks to the skill of
Simonetta Martelli, at the“consolle”, and to the excellent hospitality of the hostess. (SBC)
DECORATION / WALKING
The meetings of Decoration and Walking Groups did not take place due to the strikes of
public transport.
International Women’s Club & other Associations
A.I.A.C.E
A.I.A.C.E has proposed to our Club a common meeting on Easter costumes and gastronomy,
to be held at the head office of the European Community in Rome. The IWC Committee,
agreeing to the proposal, has decided to match this event with the March monthly meeting.
Besides the Committee, all members are kindly invited to cooperate actively by preparing
typical Easter dishes and decorations.

Wednesday 14 December, the President and the Corrisponding Secretary participated to a
monthly meeting of CNDI. On the agenda, the Convention, promoted by the National Council
of CNDI and the Association Casa-Famiglia Domus Nostra in Grottaferrata on the theme
“Children and teenagers border-line: which is their future?”. The meeting took place last
Saturday 17th December, in Grottaferrata, with the sponsorship of the Municipality,
Inner Wheel Roma-Romae
The Inner Wheel Roma-Romae invites the members of the IWC to the Charuity Concert pro
ANTEA (National Association for free medical care to terminally ill patients) which will take
place Friday – 3th February 2012 - 16,30 – at the Teatro Golden. Musics by “Rossini e
dintorni” will be played.

SPAZIO SOCIE
Questa volta ha accolto l’invito a condividere con tutte noi “pensieri e parole” Francesca Massa,
che, sulla scorta delle emozioni suscitate in lei dalla poesia evocativa del Natale dell’infanzia,
pubblicata nel numero precedente, ha ripescato nel suo cassetto di memorie queste interessanti
riflessioni su quel binomio città-campagna che forse molte di noi hanno vissuto. Grazie,
Francesca.
Città e Campagna
cinematografico settimanale, la sua unica
edicola dalle offerte assai limitate (la
gestiva un analfabeta che riconosceva i vari
giornali dal disegno dei titoli!)
Città e campagna si sono sempre contese le
nostre preferenze. Nel recente passato la
città rappresentava il sogno più ambito:
per molti era sinonimo di libertà, di
progresso, di orizzonti più vasti, di scambi
culturali da cui potevano scaturire
conoscenze sempre più nuove.
Nel venire a Roma credevo di partire da
zero: in realtà non si parte mai dal nulla!
Noi siamo sempre la risultante di tutto
quello che abbiamo vissuto e di tutto quello
che ci ha formati.
Oggi, invece, si assiste ad un’inversione di
tendenza perché la vita cittadina è
considerata troppo caotica, tanto che
spesso ci si limita a vivere nel quartiere di
residenza, dove sono localizzati i principali
servizi quasi che non sia possibile riuscire
ad utilizzare la metropoli nella sua
interezza.
Dentro di noi portiamo anche ciò che
crediamo di lasciare, perché la nostra vita è
formata da tutto il complesso del nostro
passato.
Ed io, anche se talvolta inconsapevolmente,
porto dentro di me la spontaneità dei
sentimenti della mia terra, di cui la mia
famiglia era espressione valida e calda;
rivedo ancora la figura di mio padre seduto
alla scrivania, la stessa che sto usando
mentre scrivo queste poche note...
In queste piccole realtà locali ci si illude,
infatti, di realizzare un tipo di vita più a
misura d’uomo, facilitato dalle possibilità
di incontri frequenti con le stesse persone.
C’è anche chi addirittura lascia la città,
quasi fuggendo, verso piccole isole
extraurbane, portando però con sé il tesoro
di esperienze di vita cittadina.

Per quanto mi riguarda, io sono arrivata a
Roma negli anni cinquanta, con un
modesto bagaglio di esperienze e tante
speranze. Roma non mi ha mai delusa. Ha
rappresentato per me la più grande
occasione di un’apertura mentale che non
avrebbe mai potuto darmi il mio piccolo
paese, con le sue modeste possibilità
ambientali, il suo unico spettacolo

newsletter, wants to share with us some memories on her past and some reflections concerning
that “binomial”: country or town, that many of us lived. Thanks, Francesca.
Town or Country

one a week movie show, its only one
newspaper stand, managed by an illiterate,
who recognized the various newspapers by
the drawing of the titles.
Town and country have always competed
for our preferences. In former times the
city represented the most desired dream:
for many people it was synonymous of
freedom, of progress, of new horizons, of
cultural interchange, originating new
knowledges.Today, on the contrary, we
assist to an inversion of trend, because the
city life is considered too chaotic, so that
people often limit themselves to live just in
their area, where the main services are
located, without being able to make use the
city in its wholeness.
Coming to Roma, I thought to start from
scratch: actually, nobody starts from
nothing! We are the results of all that we
have lived and all that we have learned in
the first years of our life.Within us, we
bring also what we believe to have left,
because our life is formed by all our past.
And I, even if sometimes unconsciously,
bring with me, the spontaneity of feelings
of my country, of which my family was the
most fine and warm expression; I continue
to see the figure of my father , seated at his
desk, the same I am using to write these
few notes ...
In the small villages there is the illusion to
realize a kind of life more on a human
scale, due to the possibility of easier
relationships.There is also who leaves the
town, almost running away, toward small
extra-urban “islands”, yet taking with
them the treasure of city life experiences.
As far as I am concerned, I came to Rome
in the fifties, with a modest luggage of
experiences and many hopes. Rome never
disappointed me. It represented for me the
most important opportunity of a “mental
opening” that never my village with its
modest environmental possibilities, with its
