an environment-compatible label for Tuscan furniture
No other region can equal Tuscany’s tradition of perfect balance between man and environment,
nature and artifice. A long list of natural and cultural loci well demonstrate the validity of this
marriage. It is a tradition made up of communion with and respect for nature, and the decisive
choice of sustainability is its logical development. Backed up by the right promotional policy, this
will be a winning card to play on future markets.
Starting from these premises, Regione Toscana (Region of Tuscany), through Consorzio Casa
Toscana (Consortium Casa Toscana) in collaboration with the Department of Technologies of
Architecture and Design “Pierluigi Spadolini” of the Faculty of Architecture, the University Diploma
in Wood Technologies of the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Florence and Istituto
Ambiente Italia (Environment Institute Italy), has promoted the project Green Home, aimed at the
definition of an Environmental Quality Mark.
The mark is granted by applying the LCA method, which includes several judgement parameters
and takes account of all process phases – from procurement to production, from packing to
transportation, from use to disposal.
The environmental quality of a product is assessed on the basis of three impact categories:
damage to human health, to ecosystem quality, and to mineral and fossil resources (cf. Table 1)
The process of assigning a different weight factor to each environmental impact depending on the
seriousness of the impact itself (weighting) is based on the involvement of LCA experts (panel
approach).

Certification is granted to products with “AA” and “A” rating. These ratings are obtained starting
from the lowest company production impact values. Products that do not fall within this range do
not obtain the mark.
“AA+” certifications are taken into account for companies that can document the production of
furniture in compliance with Environmental Management systems (Ecolabel and ISO 14001) and
the use of materials bearing environment-friendly certifications (e.g. FSC).

The mark is granted to a single furnishing element (but a company can request it for several
products)on a six-monthly basis and is valid for three years.
In detail, the mark is granted to the following product categories:
- sofa (the functional unit taken into account is the seat);
- armchair;
- kitchen (the functional unit taken into account is the linear meter);
- chairs;
- wardrobe;
- desks/Home-office (the functional unit taken into account is the square meter).
The value of the project Casa Toscana / Green Home has been strengthened recently by the
newly started cooperation (within DesigNetwork project) between 15 designers, proposed by
European design and service centers, and 15 Tuscan companies, aimed at the production of
products according to the given guidelines. Among the “couples”: Ferlea and Ilkka Suppanen
(Finland), Fasem and Mark Robson (France), Sedex and Studio Sismo (France), Mirabili and
Louise Campbell (Denmark), Famam and Nieves Contreras (Spain).
A project, Casa Toscana / Green Home that places Tuscan companies and Tuscany in the
forefront of environment protection on world markets.
A good way to renew the typically Tuscan tradition of perfect balance between man and
environment, nature and artifice.
