Ravenna to judge a cause between the city of Ravenna and the church of S. Lorenzo in Lucina on one side

1227, in which was elected Pope Gregory IX. Legate in Campania; died during this legation.

Fontane, near Rome.
Early life. Ordained (no further information found). Abbot of the monastery of Ss. Vincenzo ed Anastasio
alle Tre Fontane. Entered the chancery of the Roman Curia in 1215 and became papal notary. Received the
title of magister. He was a close friend of Domingo de Guzmán, founder of the Order of Preachers
(Dominicans) and supported the order in Rome.
Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon of S. Maria in Cosmedin in the consistory celebrated at the beginning
of 1216. Subscribed the papal bulls issued between March 7 to April 13, 1216; August 12, 1216 and May
9, 1226; May 7, 1227 and May 29, 1240; January 1 and May 7, 1244. Participated in the papal election

order in Viterbo, fortified the city and became its governor. Participated in the papal election of 1227, in
which was elected Pope Gregory IX. Cardinal protodeacon from 1231. Legate in the Papal States and the
duchy of Spoleto; restored the obedience of the cities of Montefiascone, Toscanella and Fara Sabina.
Possibly had the commendam of the deaconry of Ss. Cosma e Damiano in 1239. Participated in the papal
election of 1241, in which was elected Pope Celestine IV. Participated in the papal election of 12411243, in which was elected Pope Innocent IV.
Episcopate. Elected bishop of Viterbo in 1243; resigned the see in 1244. Consecrated (no information
found). Returned to Rome as vicar of the pope for the city. Legate in Sicily in 1246 with Cardinal Stefano
Normandis. He built in Viterbo the church of S. Maria ad Gradus; it was consecrated by Pope Alexander
IV in 1258 and given to the Dominican friars. Rector of the Patrimony of S. Pietro.
Death. Before June 22, 1250 (1), Viterbo. Buried before the main altar of the church of S. Maria dei Gradi,
Viterbo (2).

basilica in 1220. Legate in France against the Albigenses in 1222; participated in the councils of Paris and
Bourges. Participated in the papal election of 1227, in which was elected Pope Gregory IX. Vicar of
Rome, possibly between 1227 and 1230. Legate in England. Governor of Campania.
Episcopate. Elected bishop of Porto before August 18, 1234 (1); the see was united to that of S. Rufina on

Alexander IV. After the death of his wife, he entered the ecclesiastical state.

by Pope Innocent IV, he reduced the number of canons from thirty six to twenty five; he also reformed the
chapter of the patriarchal Lateran basilica. Legate in Sicily in 1246 with Cardinal Raniero Capocci, O.Cist.
Governor of the provinces of Sabina and Campagna e Marittima. He built and decorated the chapel of Saint
Sylvester in the church of Ss Quattro Coronati.
Death. December 8, 1254, Naples, the day in which the conclave that elected Pope Alexander IV started.
Buried in the metropolitan cathedral of Naples.

1206 and says that he signed a papal bull dated May 10, 1206; Cardella, Memorie storiche de' cardinali della Santa
Romana Chiesa, I, pt. 2, 231; and Chacón, Alfonso. Vitæ, et res gestæ Pontificvm Romanorum et S. R. E. Cardinalivm, II,
col. 41, say that the date of his creation as a cardinal is not known.
