At present he leads the group of Bioactive and Bio-inspired Product Chemistry at the Department of Chemical Sciences. He is the author or co-author of ca. 240 publications (as of September 2015, with over 5000 citations, h-index = 37 source ISI WoS) in the fields of organic and bioorganic chemistry and biochemistry. Currently he is: 1) member of the Executive Committee of the Italian Chemical Society, Division of Organic Chemistry (term of office 2011-2016); 2) Member of the Scientific Committee of the Ischia Advanced School of Organic Chemistry (IASOC Conference); 3) Scientific coordinator of the European Network for Melanin Research (EuMelaNet); 4) Member of the Editorial Board of Biomimetics (ISSN 2313-7673), an open access Journal of MDPI Publishing. Biografia Estesa Marco d’Ischia ha conseguito la laurea in Chimica con lode presso l’Università di Napoli nel 1981. Nel 1984 ha vinto il concorso per ricercatore universitario prendendo servizio presso l’Università di Napoli. Nel 1992 è diventato Professore Associato di Chimica Organica. Dal 2001 è Professore Ordinario di Chimica Organica presso l’Università di Napoli Federico II, Dipartimento di Scienze Chimiche, dove coordina un gruppo di ricerca di chimica di composti organici bioattivi e sistemi molecolari funzionali innovativi bioispirati. Dal 2001 al 2008 è stato Presidente del Consiglio di Corso di Laurea in Chimica presso l’Università di Napoli Federico II. L’attività scientifica è documentata da oltre 240 pubblicazioni (Luglio 2015, circa 5000 citazioni, h-index 37 secondo ISI WoS) su riviste internazionali, reviews e capitoli di libro nel campo della chimica organica e bioorganica. E’ stato Guest Editor di uno “special issue” della rivista internazionale Pigment Cell Research pubblicato nel 2003 (Pigment Cell Research 16(5), 433-604, 2003), è autore di due capitoli per la serie Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry -III (CHEC-III), Editor in Chief Professor Alan Katritzky, dal titolo “Pyrroles and their benzo derivatives: Structure” e “Pyrroles and their benzo derivatives: Applications” (2008) ed è autore del testo didattico “La Chimica Organica in Laboratorio” (Piccin Ed., 2002). Gli interessi di ricerca sono incentrati principalmente su tematiche riguardanti la chimica della melanine e di materiali funzionali bioispirati relazionati; la chimica delle catecolammine in relazione ai meccanismi di degenerazione neuronale; il meccanismo d’azione di composti naturali bioattivi e farmacologicamente attivi, in particolare antiossidanti e antinitrosanti fenolici in alimenti di origine vegetale; le proprietà e reattività di composti eterociclici; l’ossidazione, la nitrosazione e la nitrazione di proteine, lipidi, carboidrati ed altre biomolecole in relazione ai meccanismi di danno cellulare indotto da stress ossidativo; la chimica e il ruolo biologico di sostanze naturali bioattive contenenti zolfo e di composti eterociclici. Il Prof. d’Ischia è membro dell’European Society for Pigment Cell Research, dell’American Chemical Society e della Società Chimica Italiana. E’ stato ed è coordinatore nazionale o responsabile scientifico di unità in progetti PRIN e di tre progetti finanziati dal Ministero della Salute. Per lo svolgimento di tali ricerche il Prof. d'Ischia si è avvalso e/o si avvale della collaborazione di gruppi attivi in vari istituti di ricerca nazionali e internazionali. Biografia Estesa in inglese Marco d'Ischia graduated in Chemistry with Laude at the University of Naples in 1981. He earned a faculty position in the same university in 1984 and then rose through the ranks: in 1992 he was made Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry, and in 2001 Professor of Organic Chemistry. At present he leads the group of Bioactive and Bio-inspired Product Chemistry at the Department of Chemical Sciences of Naples University Federico II. He was Director of Chemistry Courses at Naples University (2001-2008). He is the author or co-author of ca. 240 publications (as of September 2015, with over 5000 citations, h-index = 37 -source ISI WoS) in the fields of organic and bioorganic chemistry and biochemistry, chiefly research papers on peer-reviewed international journals but also reviews and book chapters. In particular, he has contributed two chapters for the Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry -III book series (Alan Katritzky, Ed.); has been Guest Editor of a special issue of the international journal Pigment Cell Research (Pigment Cell Research 16(5), 433-604, 2003); and has edited an undergraduate student textbook on experimental organic chemistry (Piccin, 2002). Marco d'Ischia's current interests centre on the chemistry of melanins and related bionspired functional materials, including polydopamine, for application in organic electronics and bioelectronics; the design and mechanism of action of phenolic antioxidants and antinitrosating agents; the oxidative chemistry of catecholamine neurotransmitters; the oxidation, nitrosation and nitration of biomolecules in relation to oxidative stress-related pathologies; the chemistry and biological roles of sulfurcontaining natural products and heterocyclic compounds. He is member of the European Society for Pigment Cell Research and of the American Chemical Society. He has been national coordinator or principal investigator in various projects funded by Italian MIUR (PRIN), Ministry of Health and Regione Campania. These projects were partly realized with the collaboration of several national and international scientific institutions. He organized several international meetings including the International Symposium on Neuromelanin and Parkinson's Disease (Sorrento, 1993), the first Japanese-Italian Symposium on Organic Chemistry (Naples, 1999), the Luigi Minale School of Natural Products and Biorganic Chemistry, Italian Chemical Society (Salerno 2003; Naples, 2005). He was in the International Advisory Committee of the International Pigment Cell Conference held in Bordeaux (2011). He was Session Chairman at the 48th EUCHEM conference on stereochemistry, Bürgenstock, Switzerland, May 2013.
