Le Nid
Studio “Le Nid” è una bottega artigiana, in cui si perpetua, in forma aggiornata,
lo spirito delle antiche botteghe d'arte.
Un laboratorio che nasce dal legame con la tradizione locale e con la capacità
sperimentale di un popolo che, nel territorio etneo, ha sempre cercato e trovato la
propria identità.
Situata alle pendici dell'Etna, immersa tra il verde intenso degli agrumeti e il
profumo della zagara, si apre ai nostri occhi una struttura, cui sfondo impagabile
è la sagoma del vulcano, con tutte le sfumature cromatiche del suo paesaggio.
La ritualità dei gesti, l'attenzione per i particolari e il legame sacro che unisce la
tradizione di questa terra con la produzione, fanno dello Studio Le Nid un luogo
unico e irripetibile.
“Le Nid” is an artisan studio still keeping alive and reinterpreting the spirit of ancient art
studios. A laboratory deeply involved in all the ancient local traditions having a strong link
with the creativity of the inhabitants that have always looked for and found their own
identity in the Etnean territory.
The factory is situated on the slopes of the Etna Mount, dipped in the green vegetation of
citrus orchards and orange-blossom perfume. The outline of the volcano with the changing
colours of its landscape is a unique setting.
The ritual gestures, the careful attention to the details and the sacred tie linking the
traditions of this land to the production make the “Le Nid” laboratory an incomparable
and unique place.

Barbaro Messina
“Le Nid” nasce dall'ispirazione dell'eclettico e vulcanico maestro ceramista,
Barbaro Messina, che animato da una passione inestinguibile per l'arte e per il
suo territorio, ha rivoluzionato, con il suo estro creativo, il mondo della ceramica.
Nel 1966 il primo laboratorio di ceramica, “il nido”, che presto diventerà un ricco
vivaio di creatività e sperimentazione artistica.
La spiccata curiosità nei confronti delle tecniche usate dai ceramisti del passato
ha spinto il maestro Barbaro Messina a ricercare nuove soluzioni tecniche e
stilistiche interdisciplinari. Il risultato più brillante di questi studi è rappresentato
dalla scoperta di una nuova tecnica per maiolicare la pietra lavica, permettendo
l'impiego di un materiale così nobile in ambiti del tutto inaspettati.
“Le Nid” studio was set up by Mr Barbaro Messina, a versatile and talented master
ceramist animated by a unique passion for art and his land that combined with his own
creativity has remarkably changed the ceramic world.
In 1966 he opened his first ceramic laboratory known as “il nido” destined to become a
place full of creativity and artistic experimentation.
He was fascinated by the techniques used by ancient ceramists and it stimulated him to look
for innovative and multiple technical and stylistic solutions.
The result of the studies carried out is extraordinary and it is revealed by a new technique
used to apply majolica decorations onto lava stone allowing the use of a so noble material
in unexpected fields.

Tradizione e Territorio
Il territorio etneo da sempre fornisce materie prime che hanno dato
vita al ricco patrimonio artistico locale: la pietra lavica dell'Etna e
le terrecotte realizzate con le argille della valle del Simeto.
È da questo territorio ricco di contrasti, dalla sua natura generosa e
dalla sua prestigiosa tradizione artigiana, che lo Studio “Le Nid”
trae spunto per la sua ricerca e sperimentazione, affinché quelle
“fantasticherie” artistiche della sua terra vengano rese note al
mondo intero.
The Etnean territory has always provided the raw materials that have
contributed to create a precious local artistic heritage: lava stone from
Etna mount and terracotta realized with the clays from the Simeto valley.
This land full of contrasts, its generous nature and its prestigious artisan
tradition became the starting point for “Le Nid” studio to carry out
research and experimentation so that the precious artistic aspects of its
land become known all over the world.

Produzione
Espressione della cultura, folklore, costumi, colori e immagini
della Sicilia, la produzione “Le Nid”, è lo specchio e la sintesi dei
numerosi popoli che hanno segnato la storia di questa terra.
Attraverso l'uso della pietra lavica e del cotto manuale, realizza una
produzione alquanto vasta che va dai tavoli alle piastrelle, dalla
pavimentazione e rivestimento d'interni ed esterni ai complementi
di arredo per bagni e cucine, dal piccolo oggetto di artigianato alla
realizzazione di complessi progetti.
The “Le Nid” production is deeply rooted in the culture, folklore, customs,
colours and images of Sicily and it is the reflection and the synthesis of
several populations that marked the history of this land.
Through the use of lava stone and hand made terracotta it produces a wide
variety of products ranging from tables, tiles, outdoor paving and interior
laying, bath and kitchen accessories, small objects having artisan
connotations till the realization of elaborate projects.

caratteristiche specifiche e le piccole irregolarità che lo contraddistinguono e ne
confermano la fattura artigianale.
Una produzione sempre impegnata nella ricerca di soluzioni esteticamente
raffinate e innovative nel design e negli effetti cromatici, al fine di garantire un
prodotto dalle elevate caratteristiche estetiche e materiali.

Each product becomes an unequalled item considering its peculiar properties and the
small imperfections that are characteristic of the artisan workmanship.
A production always involved in trying out innovative aesthetic solutions as for the design
and for the chromatic effects so to obtain a product having the best aesthetic and material
characteristics.
The simple motifs, the various sizes, the glossy colours offer the opportunity to personalise
the product so to satisfy the needs of peculiar furnishings or the requests of demanding
customers.

Lavorazione Le Nid
“Fatto a mano” è la parola d'ordine del processo di lavorazione
della produzione artistica firmata “Le Nid”.
La lavorazione dei prodotti Le Nid è realizzata nel laboratorio di
Paternò. Questa è suddivisa in tre fasi: Smaltatura, Decorazione,
Cottura. Nonostante l'utilizzo di innovativi strumenti tecnologici
mirati al rispetto dell'ambiente, la selezione dei materiali, il
disegno e la stesura dei colori sono tutte procedure realizzate
rigorosamente con tecniche tradizionali.
“Hand made” is the key word in the manufacturing process characterizing
the artistic production signed “Le Nid”.
The processing method is carried out in the laboratory set up in the town of
Paternò. It consists of three phases: glazing, decorating and firing.
Despite the use of innovative technological devices aiming at respecting
the environment, the choice of the materials, the designs and the spreading
of the colours are all processes carried out following scrupulously
traditional techniques.

Decori
È dalla terra ricca di contrasti, quale è la Sicilia, che “Le Nid” trae
l'ispirazione per i suoi decori.
In essi prendono forma e vita gli elementi cromatici e decorativi
tipici della tradizione araba, greca, romana, normanna e bizantina.
Tradizione, mito, folklore e innovazione sono in continua ed
incessante fusione.
Sicily is a land full of contrasts and it is by this aspect that “Le Nid” studio
is inspired for its decorations. They are characterised by typical chromatic
and decorative elements showing the influence of the Arab, Greek, Roman,
Norman and Byzantine traditions.
Tradition, myth, folklore and innovation are the key elements of the
production.

Produzione Cotto
I prodotti in cotto, ottenuti dall'utilizzo del pregiato cotto etneo, vengono
proposti in una vasta serie di formati, composizioni e finiture, quali: naturale,
tinta unita, pennellato e decorato.
Terracotta products obtained from the precious etnean terracotta come in a array of sizes,
forms and finishes such as: natural, plain colour, brushed effects and decorated.

Lavorazione Cotto Manuale
Il cotto, realizzato interamente a mano mescolando le argille della
Valle del Simeto con un macinato di pietra vulcanica, presenta una
particolare composizione mineralogica che conferisce al prodotto
finito caratteristiche chimico-fisiche eccezionali.
L'impasto viene modellato a mani nude all'interno di singoli stampi
di varie forme e misure.
Ogni singola mattonella viene nuovamente lavorata per evitare le
sbavature dell'argilla.
Infine questa viene posta in forno per la cottura.
The terracotta is strictly hand crafted by mixing the clays from the Simeto
valley with a ground volcanic stone. It has a peculiar mineralogical
composition giving to the finished product the best chemical-physical
properties.
The mixture is manually pressed into moulds having various shapes and
sizes.
Each tile is then processed again to avoid clay smudge.
Finally it is put in the kiln to be fired.

Produzione Pietra Lavica
Grazie alla loro versatilità e resistenza, i prodotti in pietra lavica sono disponibili
in diversi formati, composizioni e finiture quali: naturale, tinta unita, pennellato
e decorato. Si realizzano, infatti, tavoli, top per cucine e bagni, pavimenti,
mosaici, piatti doccia, lavelli e rivestimenti.
Extremely versatile and highly resistant the products realized using lava stone are
available in a range of sizes, forms and finishes such as: natural, plain colour, brushed
effects and decorated. They are suitable for the production of tables, kitchen and bathroom
countertops, floors, mosaics, shower bases, sinks and coverings.

Lavorazione Pietra Lavica
Il basalto etneo è una roccia vulcanico effusiva, di tipo basico.
Viene estratto con il metodo cosiddetto “per cascata”, il quale
consiste nel determinare il crollo per rottura di un solettone
irregolare di dimensione non controllabile.
I blocchi sgrossati vengono passati alle segherie che ne ricavano
lastre, da cui si ricavano elementi di rivestimento che possono
essere levigati, lucidati, o maiolicati.
The Etnean basalt is a basic, effusive volcanic rock. It is extracted with a
method known as “open pit mining” that consists in removing the stone
from the earth in the form of a large irregular block having dimensions that
cannot be checked. After the extraction phase the blocks undergo the first
roughing out operations and then they are processed on block cutters to be
cut into slabs. Finally they become coating elements that can be honed,
polished or tiled with majolica.

Le caratteristiche dei prodotti
Le Nid
Le produzioni “Le Nid”, lavorate, smaltate e decorate a mano con tecniche
tradizionali, sono realizzate su materiali naturali: la pietra lavica dell'Etna ed il
cotto manuale etneo. In quanto materiali naturali, possono presentare delle
piccole irregolarità, che ne sottolineano il pregio e l'unicità.
Le variazioni di colore, di finiture e di forme sono inerenti a tutti i prodotti
realizzati con materiale ceramico, così come per quelli realizzati con pietra
naturale o terracotta. Per questo, per mantenere la costanza di tinta in rapporto al
campionario, viene posta la massima cura ed impegno durante la produzione.
Tuttavia, essendo la produzione esclusivamente di tipo artigianale, si declina
ogni responsabilità per eventuali differenze di tonalità.
Nonostante pietra lavica e cotto fatto a mano siano una garanzia di resistenza
all'usura e durevolezza, la loro ceramizzazione, nel tempo può presentare segni
di usura. Ciò riguarda soprattutto materiale smaltato per pavimenti a causa
dell'intensità del calpestio cui è sottoposto e delle modalità di utilizzo e
manutenzione.
Le caratteristiche dei prodotti in pietra lavica
Tracce di colore blu-verde o piccoli fori sulla superficie maiolicata sono
irregolarità che possono essere presenti sui prodotti realizzati in pietra lavica. Si
possono definire come segni della natura che non compromettono il decoro o la
superficie maiolicata, ma contribuiscono a dare bellezza e originalità al prodotto
finito.
Le caratteristiche dei prodotti in cotto
L'irregolarità dei prodotti in cotto manuale non sono un difetto di produzione, ma
peculiarità evidente del cotto siciliano fatto a mano. Il prodotto si presenta con
una superficie più ruvida e mossa e con una caratteristica variazione di tonalità.

The characteristics of
“Le Nid” products
The “Le Nid” production, processed, glazed and decorated by hand according to
traditional techniques is realized using materials provided by nature: lava stone from Etna
mount and the hand made Etnean terracotta.
Considering that they are natural materials the irregularities that they can show make each
element a unique and unrepeatable exemplar.
All the products obtained using ceramic material, natural stone or terracotta can show
variations in colour, finishing and size.
In order to maintain a uniform colour in the collections the best attention and care is paid
during the production.
Moreover considering that the production is strictly realized according to artisan methods
we disclaim all responsibility as for any variation of colour.
Despite lava stone and hand made terracotta are extremely resistant and durable thus
reducing the problems caused by time, once they are processed into ceramics with the
passing of time they can show traces of wear.
This mainly regards glazed material used to cover floors because of the trampling it is
exposed, its use and maintenance.
Lava stone production
Traces of blue-green colour or small holes are irregularities that can be found in the
products realized using lava stone.
They can be considered as signs left by nature that do not compromise the decoration or the
glazed surface but they contribute to add value and originality to the finished product.
Terracotta production
The irregularities peculiar to hand made terracotta products are not a fault but they reveal
the Sicilian artisan method of working by hand. The product shows an unpolished and
irregular surface and a characteristic variety of hues.
