Acqua è Vita
È un onore condividere con CO.E.S. – Compagnia Edil Sanitaria
SpA l’impegno di dare acqua agli assettati. Un gesto nobile per
rispondere a un diritto negato a troppi nel mondo. Una risposta
di coerenza all’appello della Comunità Internazionale che ci
invita a fare anche nostro l’impegno di dimezzare, entro il 2015,
il numero delle persone (un miliardo e mezzo!) che ancora oggi
non hanno accesso ad una fonte d’acqua potabile e a servizi
igienici adeguati.
La LVIA con persone di buona volontà del nord e del sud del
mondo – giovani, professionisti, donne e uomini, intellettuali e
uomini di fatica -, ha dato una risposta permanente alle esigenze di due milioni di persone. Da quasi 40 anni, infatti, è impegnata con i suoi volontari e con le popolazioni locali a realizzare pozzi in Etiopia e Guinea, a costruire invasi artificiali in
Burkina Faso, a fabbricare ed installare eoliane nei villaggi del
Senegal e a formare équipe di tecnici per la riparazione di pompe
manuali, eoliche e solari in Mali, a progettare e realizzare
acquedotti per le comunità rurali in Kenya, Tanzania e Burundi.
La nostra “storia d’acqua” ci ha resi particolarmente sensibili
agli appelli internazionali sul grave problema della mancanza
d’acqua nei paesi più poveri: nel 2003, con lo slogan Acqua è
vita, abbiamo dunque lanciato una Campagna di solidarietà, il
cui obiettivo è assicurare l’accesso all’acqua a 500.000 persone,

SpA – the task of giving water to those who need it. A noble gesture
in response to a right to which too many people across the world are
denied. A coherent response to the international community which is
asking us to play our part in halving the number of people (1.5 billion!) who still do not have access to a source of fresh drinking water
and adequate sanitation, by 2015.
The LVIA and its willing volunteers from the Northern and Southern
hemispheres – young people, professionals, men and women, intellectuals and labourers -, has furnished a permanent response to the needs
of two million people. For almost 40 years, it has been working with
its volunteers and local populations to build wells in Ethiopia and
Guinea, to construct artificial reservoirs in Burkina Faso, to manufacture and install wind turbines in Senegalese villages and to train
teams of technicians to repair manual, wind-driven and solar pumps
in Mali, to design and construct aqueducts for rural communities in
Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi.
Our “history of water” has made us particularly sensitive to the international appeals concerning the serious problem of water shortages in
the world’s poorest countries: in 2003, with the slogan “Acqua è
vita” (Water is Life), we launched a solidarity campaign, with the aim
of guaranteeing access to water for 500,000 people, by 2006, in the
African countries where our projects are located. A feasible objective,

entro il 2006, nei paesi africani dove operiamo. Un obiettivo
possibile e doveroso che però non possiamo raggiungere da
soli: per questo chiamiamo a unirsi a noi quanti vogliano contribuire a quest’azione di giustizia e di solidarietà. In forza della
nostra esperienza e della credibilità acquisita, oggi i Portatori
d’acqua (così amiamo chiamare coloro che aderiscono ad Acqua
è vita), sono moltissimi in tutta Italia. Da quest’anno anche
CO.E.S. S.p.A. è Portatore d’acqua in Africa.

Grazie alla collaborazione con CO.E.S. S.p.A., bimbi e adulti in
Mali faranno meno fatica a sperare in un futuro diverso perché
“acqua è vita”, perché accesso all’acqua è istruzione, perché
acqua potabile è salute. Sono persone che conosciamo e che vi
auguriamo di incontrare per poter apprezzare il calore del loro
grazie.
Per sperimentare che, giorno dopo giorno, è possibile costruire
insieme rapporti di pace e convivenza.
Appuntamento quindi in Mali! Appuntamento quindi al prossimo pozzo!

that we consider our duty – but we cannot do it alone. This is why we
are asking all those who would like to contribute to this initiative to
join us, in the name of justice and solidarity. On the strength of our
experience and the credibility we have acquired, there are now a large
number of “Water Carriers” (as we like to call members of the Water
is Life project) throughout Italy. From this year, CO.E.S. S.p.A. is
also a Water Carrier for Africa.
Thanks to the collaboration of CO.E.S. S.p.A., adults and children in
Mali will find it easier to hope for a different future, because “water is
life”, because having access to water is education, and because drinking water means health. We know these people, and we hope you get
the chance to meet them so you can appreciate the warmth of their gratitude.
To discover that by working together day after day, we can create
peace and harmony.
So, we’ll see you in Mali – at the next well!

Ci sarà una volta
Sono Massimo Fogliati, Presidente della Coes, figlio del fondatore, Carlo Fogliati e in occasione del 40° anniversario della
azienda ho riflettuto su un principio portante: “per noi, ormai,
l’acqua è sostanzialmente business, ma, per molti, l’acqua è,
ancora, soprattutto vita”.
Quindi, dopo aver prodotto ed installato, in cinque continenti,
milioni di chilometri di tubazioni, ho voluto festeggiare 40 anni
di successi e la costante crescita che hanno portato, nel gennaio
del 2005, all’apertura del nuovo stabilimento di Ascoli Satriano
vicino a Foggia: ho voluto portare l’acqua in un paese dove non
c’era e dove ancora si poteva morire per la mancanza di questo
bene prezioso.
L’idea ha portato alla nascita del WATER LIFE COES PROJECT
a favore del Mali che è il 171° paese nella classifica delle nazioni più ricche al mondo. Su 173.
Il progetto è stato realizzato grazie alla collaborazione della
“coetanea” LVIA Organizzazione Non Governativa di volontari laici che, dal 1965 ad oggi, ha trivellato centinaia di pozzi
d’acqua in Africa.
Insieme alla LVIA abbiamo scelto, in Africa, il Mali che ha un
reddito pro capite di circa 400 dollari annui ed una speranza di
vita che è quasi la metà rispetto all’Italia.
All’interno del Mali, abbiamo individuato il piccolo villaggio di
Ernedjef (a 6 km da Tinoker e a circa 80 km da Gao), situato in
una posizione strategica per gli allevatori della zona che sono

Carlo Fogliati. To mark the company’s 40th anniversary, I reflected on an important concept: “Nowadays, water mostly means
business, but for many, water still means life”.
This is why, after having produced and installed millions of kilometres of pipes in five different continents, I wanted to celebrate 40
years of success and the continual growth that led to our new plant
opening at Ascoli Satriano, near Foggia in January 2005. I wanted
to take water to a country which had none, and where people are
still dying because they cannot obtain this precious commodity.
This idea led to the foundation of the WATER LIFE COES PROJECT for Mali, which ranks 171st in the list of the world’s richest
nations – out of 173.
The project was realised thanks to the work of the Italian nongovernmental organisation formed of lay volunteers, the LVIA,
founded in the same year as COES. This organisation has drilled
hundreds of water wells in Africa since 1965.
Together with the LVIA, we chose Mali, in Africa, with a per capita income of around 400 dollars per year, and a life expectancy
almost half that of Italy.
In Mali, we located the little village of Ernedjef (6 km from Tinoker
and around 80 km from Gao), located in a strategic position for the
local farmers, the Tamasheq-speaking Tuareg. Here, there is a constant battle against disease and thirst. Their one meal per day is a
handful of rice or alternatively, camel milk.

Tuareg Tamasheq; qui si lotta, costantemente, con malattie,
fame e sete e l’unico pasto quotidiano è costituito, alternativamente, da un pugno di riso o da latte di dromedario.
Ho pensato che quanto il Consiglio di Amministrazione aveva
stanziato per pubblicizzare e festeggiare il 40° anniversario della
Coes, potesse essere indirizzato nel miglior investimento possibile: salvare la vita ad alcuni abitanti di Ernedjef e migliorare la vita
a tutti loro consentendo un futuro ed uno sviluppo a questo villaggio. Questo libro è nato per documentare tutto ciò, ed è denso
di immagini e scarno di parole, che sarebbero state superflue. Le
prime fotografie documentano diversi luoghi di Gao e Tinoker e
del fiume Niger in alcuni suoi aspetti di quotidianità, le altre,
sono relative al microscopico villaggio di Ernedjef prima, durante e subito dopo la costruzione del Pozzo Coes. Ritengo importantissimo che il giorno stesso della inaugurazione del pozzo (15
I believed that the funds earmarked by the Board of Directors to
publicise and celebrate the 40th anniversary of COES could have
been directed towards the best investment possible: saving the lives
of some of the inhabitants of Ernedjef and improving the standard
of living for all of them, giving the village a future and a chance for
growth. This book has been designed to record all this. It is full of
pictures and few words, which would have been superfluous: the
first few photographs show scenes from daily life in various areas
of Gao, Tinoker and the River Niger. The others were taken in the
tiny village of Ernedjef before, during and immediately after the
Coes well was built. I believe it is an important sign that on the
same day the well was opened (15 October 2005), the Tuareg farmers began sowing millet and planting little acacia trees, just as it
is reassuring to see that the farmers began constructing enclosures
for the goats and camels to be acquired from neighbouring areas.

così come è rassicurante che gli allevatori abbiano iniziato a predisporre recinti per le capre e i dromedari che si prevedeva potessero arrivare dalle zone limitrofe.
Non a caso, già a fine novembre, si erano insediati più di 60
nuovi abitanti, attratti dall’acqua che lì è, di gran lunga, il bene
più prezioso.
Ho voluto rispettare, totalmente, la cultura dei Tuareg
Tamasheq, le loro abitudini e le loro tradizioni limitandomi a
portare l’acqua: tutto il resto sanno perfettamente come farlo e
lo stanno già dimostrando.
Se sfoglio il libro dalle prime pagine fino alle ultime, soprattutto
ammirando i volti dei bambini, non riesco a non emozionarmi.
Non avrei mai creduto possibile che mi sarei ritrovato, spesso,
a pensare con soddisfazione: però,… il Pozzo Coes sta regalando oltre quattro metri cubi di acqua potabile ogni ora, che sono
sufficienti a soddisfare le esigenze di oltre 400 persone e, circa,
di 400 capi di bestiame….
Sarà la mia età che ha portato maturità, sarà l’orgoglio di quanto la Coes ha fatto in questi anni, o forse il desiderio di ringraziare mio padre che, con intraprendenza e coraggio, ha iniziato
a produrre, personalmente, nel 1965 i primi prodotti della Coes
nel garage di casa… ma ho voluto creare qualcosa di concreto e
importante che rimanesse nel tempo e venisse apprezzato, compreso e condiviso da tutti Voi … spero di esserci riuscito…
intanto, grazie all’acqua, ad Ernedjef, sempre più persone vivono meglio… non è poco.
It is no coincidence that as early as the end of November, 60 new
inhabitants had settled there, attracted by the water which is by far
the most precious asset in Mali.
I wanted to respect the culture, customs and traditions of the
Tamasheq-speaking Tuareg completely, by bringing water alone:
they are perfectly able to do the rest, as they are already showing.
Leafing through this book from beginning to end, it is impossible
not to be moved, especially if you look at the faces of the children.
I would never have thought it possible that I would often find
myself thinking contentedly: Amazing,… the Coes well provides
more than four cubic metres of water every hour, enough to meet
the needs of more than 400 people and around 400 animals…
Maybe I have grown wiser with age, maybe I’m proud of what Coes
has achieved in recent years, or perhaps it’s a desire to thank my
father who, in 1965, took the bold, enterprising step of producing
the first Coes products in his garage… but I wanted to make a real,
important contribution that will last, something that all of you will
appreciate, understand and share. I hope I have succeeded…but
meanwhile, thanks to the water in Ernedjef, more and more people
have a better standard of living…. and that’s no mean feat.
