In the 1830s, the only way to get from London’s new main railway stations to the city centre was on foot or horse-drawn cab. London needed to have a faster form of transport, so work began on the London Underground. 2 Why did the city need an underground system? 3 What was the name of the first line? London was the first city to have an underground transport system. The first line, the Metropolitan Line, opened in 1863. 4 Who designed the tube map? A man called Harry Beck designed the original Underground map in 1933, and it is still almost exactly the same today. He invented the system of different colours for the different lines. Harry Beck did all this work for very little money. He isn’t very well-known. There is only a small notice about his work, at Finchley Central station. Today the London Underground (its nickname is ‘the tube’) covers 408 km of railway, and nearly 3,000,000 people travel on it every day. There are 12 lines and 275 stations. The Tube has a very interesting history. During the Second World War, lots of Londoners slept in the Underground stations at night, because they used the stations as bomb shelters. ES T 19 4 Exams The High m School ro Reading 1 The high school prom in the USA is a formal party at the end of the final school year. High schools can have two proms: a junior prom for students who are finishing their 11th Grade, and a senior prom for students who are leaving high school. For most students, prom night is a very exciting night. US High school year th 1 2 3 Students known as: 9 Grade (age 14 – 15) Freshman 10th Grade (age 15 – 16) Sophomore 11th Grade (age 16 – 17) Junior 12th Grade (age 17 – 18) Senior The word prom comes from promenade ball, a type of formal dance in the 19th century. High school proms began in the early 1900s. At first they were quite simple events, but with the arrival of the car in the 1920s, they became more formal and extravagant. In the 1980s, it became an important part of growing up in the USA. On prom night, boys usually wear dinner jackets and bow ties and girls wear ball gowns. The boys often give the girls small bunches of flowers, called corsages. The girls wear these on their arm or their dress. At the prom the students eat, drink and dance. During the evening they choose a Prom King and Queen – the most popular boy and girl from the senior year. The Prom King gets a crown, the Queen gets a tiara and they have a special dance together. Traditionally, prom night is a very romantic evening. For this reason, it can be stressful: some students feel they have to find a date for the special night. For seniors, the prom is the last time that they see their school friends before graduation, when they begin their lives as adults. Perhaps this is why the prom is such an important part of teenage life in the USA. Making a phone call 2 Dear Rob, Help! I’m really confused. Yesterday was the most embarrassing day of my life! Did I tell you about Emily? She’s a girl in my class and I really like her. Last week I asked her to come out with me and she said yes! I was nervous, but really pleased, too. I arranged to meet her at the cinema at half past three. The first problem was that the bus was late and I got to the cinema at four o’clock. Emily was still there, but she was a bit annoyed. Because I was late, there were no more tickets for the new James Bond film. We were both disappointed, but we bought tickets for a different film. It was a war film and it was terrible! We were really bored. We left before the end and we went to a pizzeria instead. We had our pizzas and then it was time to pay. But then I couldn’t find my wallet, so I had to borrow money from Emily! She was really fed up about that and when we left the restaurant, she said I was the most annoying person in the world. I was really shocked! It wasn’t my fault I lost my wallet!
