Dear IS Modena families,
We hope you’ve had a pleasant ski-week and are ready for this second part of the term which will be
intense, exciting and most of all a learning experience for our whole school community.
Book week starts today! A whole week full of interesting events for our students, all dedicated to the
world of books! Students, teachers and parents will all be involved. Please remember that Carnevale
dress-up day is tomorrow Tuesday, March 4 (Mardi Gras) and Book Fair on Wednesday from 10 to
16:30!
You have recently received details for the Student Led Conferences which will be taking place on
Friday, March 21st, from 13:00 to 18:00. This will be the fourth edition of Student Led Conferences
here at ISM and your precious feedback from last year’s edition has been implemented into this new
one. We will ask you again for your detailed feedback following this special event to help us improve
even more for next year.
Throughout the year we run several IB PYP and MYP workshops for IS Modena parents and also
prospective parents to introduce and explain our didactic programmes. Yet, some parents still find it
difficult to understand what the transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches are about. Student
Led Conferences will give you an extremely valuable insight on our learning processes. They will make
our academic activities more transparent and understandable and you will have a better idea of what
your child is learning in school. More information on the Student Led Conferences is included in the
Upcoming Events in the newsletter.
Today, we also welcome three new students here at IS Modena. Sima O. will join our Grade 1, Shreyasi
S. will join our Grade 2 and Layal O. will join our Grade 3. We wish our new students and their families
a smooth transition into the new country, home and school life.

Gent.me famiglie IS Modena,
Ci auguriamo abbiate trascorso una piacevole ‘settimana bianca’ e siate pronti per la seconda parte
del trimestre che si preannuncia intensa, interessante e, soprattutto, una fantastica esperienza di
apprendimento per tutta la nostra comunità scolastica.
La Settimana del Libro inizia oggi! Un’intera settimana piena di attività interessanti per tutti i nostri
studenti, interamente dedicate al mondo dei libri, e che coinvolgeranno studenti, insegnanti e genitori.
Ricordate che domani, martedì 4 marzo (martedì grasso) sarà una giornata di Carnevale in maschera e
che mercoledì avremo la Fiera del Libro dalle 10 alle 16.30!
Avete già ricevuto informazioni sugli Incontri guidati dagli studenti che si svolgeranno venerdì 21
marzo dalle 13:00 alle 18:00. Sarà la quarta edizione degli Incontri qui alla ISM e beneficerà delle
modifiche apportate sulla base del vostro prezioso feedback sull’edizione dello scorso anno. Vi
chiederemo ancora una volta un commento dettagliato su questo speciale evento così da consentirci di
migliorarci ulteriormente il prossimo anno.
Nel corso dell’anno vengono organizzati diversi workshops IB PYP e MYP per i genitori della IS Modena
e per famiglie esterne interessate, con lo scopo di presentare e spiegare i nostri programmi didattici.
Tuttavia, alcuni genitori incontrano ancora alcune difficoltà a capire cosa siano gli approcci
transdisciplinari ed interdisciplinari. Gli Incontri guidati dagli studenti vi daranno la preziosa
opportunità di capire meglio i nostri processi di apprendimento. Renderanno più comprensibili e
trasparenti le nostre attività accademiche e avrete un’idea più approfondita di cosa stiano imparando i
vostri figli qui a scuola. Troverete ulteriori informazioni sugli Incontri guidati dagli studenti tra gli Eventi
in Programma nella newsletter.
Inoltre, oggi daremo il benvenuto a tre nuovi studenti: Sima O. frequenterà il nostro Grade 1, Shreyasi
S. il Grade 2 e Layal O. il Grade 3. Auguriamo ai nostri nuovi studenti e alle loro famiglie di adattarsi
facilmente al nuovo paese, alla nuova casa e alla nuova vita scolastica.

World Book Day on Thursday, March 6th
Book Week at ISM and we have organised events and activities to happen throughout the week.
For all our students:
every morning you can listen to stories that are being read by guest readers in many different
languages (details will be sent home)
decorate your classroom together after your favourite book for a chance to win a fun prize
dress up for Mardi Gras as your favourite book character on March 4th
celebrate world book day together on March 6th
 investigate our latest book display " Books that changed my life" and share your opinion at the
interactive discussion board
share ideas about new books for the library by adding to the library wish list
add your suggestions for book related activities that we could include into our school life at ISM
For all our parents:
please come and read to our students in your native language or in English
Check out and buy books at our annual BOOK FAIR in the Library on March 5 from 10 to 4:30 pm,
organized by The Book Team ( UK )
 Donate books in Italian for the Kindergarten/Scuola Materna "Caiumi" in Bomporto that lost most of
their teaching material during the flooding in January.

Student Led Conferences - Friday , March 21st
Early dismissal at 13:00
Student Led Conferences are an exciting opportunity for your child to
independently share his/her school learning with you.
On Friday March 21st all students will be involved in Student Led
Conferences starting from 13:00.
The Student Led Conferences will be anywhere from 60-90 minutes in
length. Your appointment will be sent home this week with your
children please inform the school office and/or class teacher if you
haven’t received it. There will be several conferences happening
simultaneously in your child’s classroom from 13:00 onwards in order
for all conferences to be finished by 18:00 that day.
Please remember you may be asked to join in some PE activities with
your child (outdoor shoes are not allowed on the gymnasium floor,
please take them off or bring gym shoes to wear).
We will offer childcare for ISM siblings in the auditorium during the
conferences. The school meal will be provided regularly and bus
service will run at 13:00. The school office must be informed if your
child(ren) will not be riding the school bus home at 13:00.
Incontri Guidati dagli Studenti - Venerdì 21 marzo
uscita anticipata ore 13:00
Gli Incontri Guidati dagli Studenti rappresentano per i vostri figli un’ottima opportunità di
condividere indipendentemente il proprio apprendimento con voi.
Venerdì 21 marzo tutti gli studenti saranno impegnati negli Incontri Guidati dagli Studenti a
partire dalle ore 13:00.
Gli Incontri dureranno dai 60 ai 90 minuti. L’orario del vostro appuntamento vi sarà inviato a
casa questa settimana, vi preghiamo di informare la segreteria e/o insegnante di classe qualora
non vi arrivasse. Più incontri si svolgeranno contemporaneamente in ciascuna aula dalle 13:00
in poi, in modo da concludere tutti gli incontri entro le ore 18:00.
Vi ricordiamo che vi potrebbe essere richiesto di prendere parte ad alcune attività di
educazione fisica insieme ai vostri figli: non sono ammesse scarpe da esterno in palestra,
quindi sarete pregati di toglierle o indossare scarpe da ginnastica.
Durante gli incontri, nell’auditorium, offriremo un servizio di assistenza per i fratelli o sorelle
iscritti alla scuola. Il servizio mensa verrà fornito regolarmente come anche il servizio autobus
alle ore 13:00.
La segreteria deve essere informata se vs. figlio/i non usufruiranno del servizio bus alle ore
13:00.

Update on the
flood relief
actions
On the morning of Thursday 20th of February 2014 Alessia B,
Alexandra de la G. and I, Claudia Schmitz, went to the scuola
materna in Bomporto to drop off the first car load of donations.
We have collected many many bag full of toys, clothing and
school materials that are desperately needed. The school building
itself is undergoing rebuilding right now, the 84 children who
attend this school normally are currently being instructed in
container buildings, still being in place from the previous earth
quakes help. The director of the school was very thankful for all
the donations and explained that she hopes to be back in the
building by May, although it’s more realistic to expect to be back
in September.
We keep collecting items for the school but also for families
affected in that area until the end of the school year in June. If
you have any item that could be of help, please let us know. We
also compiled a list of furniture, that could be used by the families
in Bomporto and Bastiglia to replace the damaged or destroyed
things.

Aggiornamenti sugli aiuti per l'alluvione
Nella mattinata di giovedì 20 febbraio 2014 Alessia B, Alexandra
de la G. ed io, Claudia Schmitz, siamo andate alla scuola materna
di Bomporto per consegnare il primo carico di donazioni.
Abbiamo raccolto moltissime borse piene di giocattoli, indumenti
ed articoli vari estremamente necessari. L'edificio scolastico
è attualmente in ricostruzione, e gli 84 bambini che frequentano
la scuola sono stati spostati nei container precedentemente
allestiti durante il terremoto. La direttrice della scuola è stata
estremamente grata per le donazioni e ci ha spiegato che spera si
possa far rientro nell'edificio a maggio, anche se è più realistico
pensare di rientrare a settembre.
Continueremo a raccogliere articoli per la scuola, ma anche per le
famiglie colpite dalla calamità, fino alla fine dell'anno scolastico.
Se avete oggetti che pensate possano essere utili, fatecelo pure
sapere. Abbiamo anche fatto una lista degli arredi che potrebbero
essere usati dalle famiglie di Bomporto e Bastiglia in sostituzione
di ciò che è andato distrutto o danneggiato.

School activity starts at 8:30!
We kindly remind you that school days start at 8:30 sharp. Which means the school activity will
begin exactly at 8:30 and any late comers will be disrupting class. Please come in before 8:30
am, children can be dropped off from 8:10 onwards.
We remind parents that they are kindly invited to leave the Primary classrooms by 8:25 am in
the morning.
Teachers begin their didactic activity at 8:30 am.

giornata iniziano proprio alle 8:30 e qualsiasi ritardatario si ritroverà ad interrompere

Emergency contact procedure in place at IS Modena in case of heavy snow falls
Always check our school website first, in case we need to close the school the homepage will
host the information; our Facebook page and account will also host the same information
however the website will be the first to be updated;
Should the snowfall occur during the night, all our parents will receive an emergency
communication via text/SMS on their mobile devices (cell phones). Please make sure the office
has your updated Italian contact number.

Se dovesse nevicare durante la notte, i nostri genitori riceveranno una comunicazione

All parents must use the public parking area outside the
school gate at all times.
Please remember to lock your cars and please make sure you
don’t leave any personal belongings in the car.
Internal parking area is reserved for staff only and the bus
service.
