Presenza Italiana in Giordania nel settore medicale:
Ospedale da campo, Mafraq al nord
E’ stato inaugurato recenteemente, in data 10.07.2012 nel nord della Giordania, al confine con la Siria, un
ospedale da campo allestito dalla Cooperazione italiana per dare assistenza medica alle migliaia di profughi
giunti negli ultimi mesi dalla Siria.
L’Ospedale gestito in collaborazione con i servizi sanitari giordani
La struttura, situata nella città di Mafraq, è stata realizzata in collaborazione con la Protezione Civile e
l'Associazione Nazionale Alpini dopo un precedente invio di kit medici in Siria e Libano. Ll'ospedale e’ gestito
in collaborazione con i servizi sanitari giordani.
Ospedale italiano a Kerak, al sud del paese:
L’Ospedale che sorge su un terreno di circa 7600 m2, ed è condotto dalle Suore Missionarie Comboniane,
come quello di Amman, ha iniziato la sua attività nel 1935 con 36 posti letto e, pur essendo a carattere
policlinico, funziona prevalentemente come maternità, per le necessità locali. Attualmente dispone di un
reparto di medicina generale, sala operatoria ed una stanza per la pediatria. Tra il 1992 ed il 1995 è stato
completamente ristrutturato, portando il numero di posti letto a 40. Ma si spera, se si troveranno i fondi, di
poter arrivare a 47 posti letto per creare un piccolo reparto di lungodegenza che raccolga anziani ammalati e
abbandonati.
L’Opera offre un servizio molto apprezzato dalla popolazione locale, in particolare dalla minoranza etnica
negra dei “Gorani”, tribù che abita prevalentemente nella zona del Mar Morto e che è socialmente
emarginata.

L’Ospedale Italiano di Amman
L’Ospedale, il primo sorto in quella che, a quel tempo, era la Transgiordania, ha iniziato la sua attività nel
1927 ed ha svolto un servizio sino ad oggi riconosciuto e stimato da tutte le autorità giordane.
Esso sorge su un terreno di circa 11.000 mq nel pieno centro della città vecchia di Amman. L’area coperta
dagli immobili è di circa 1800 mq.
Attualmente dispone di 60 posti letto e svolge un’attività a carattere policlinico. E’ dotato di numerosi
ambulatori per le diverse specialità tra le quali sono particolarmente importanti la maternità e la sezione
chirurgica.
E’ gestito dalle Suore Missionarie Comboniane (Pie Madri della Nigrizia).
A partire dal 1990 si è compiuto un rilevante sforzo di modernizzazione, con dotazioni di nuove
apparecchiature e lavori di ristrutturazione di notevole entità nel reparto lungodegenti, nella sezione
maternità, ginecologia e nido, nel reparto di fisioterapia, nel laboratorio di analisi, ampliati e completamente
rinnovati e nei locali degli ambulatori, resi più ampi e dotati di nuovi strumenti ed apparecchi.
L’ospedale, proprio per la sua caratteristica di struttura benefica che si rivolge, come già si è detto, alla parte
più povera della popolazione, mantiene, con molta difficoltà, l’autosufficienza economica
E’ stato presentato alla CEE un progetto di ristrutturazione totale per rendere l’ospedale sempre più in grado
di soddisfare le necessità della parte povera della popolazione che gravita attorno ad esso. L’A.N.S.M.I sta
cercando di ottenere aiuti da diverse fonti per poter integrare l’eventuale contributo CEE che coprirebbe
soltanto parzialmente il costo della suddetta ristrutturazione.

The Royal Medical Services in the Jordanian health system (RMS)
The Royal Medical Services occupies prominent place among the units of the armed forces of Jordan and
the Jordanian sectors of the health system through:
-Health care for the officers and members of the armed forces and various security services who make up
the shield of the homeland and its perimeters, and the provision of medical services they need in the field all
circumstances and at all times.
-Comprehensive health insurance for more than one-third of the Kingdom's population.
-Address the complex medical cases and high-cost transferred from the Ministry of Health and theUniversity
of Jordan Hospital and the private sector:
- Diseases and Neurosurgery.
- Disease and cardiac surgery.
- Burns.
- Kidney Diseases and surgery and dialysis.
- Diseases and eye surgery.
- Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery complex.
- Bone Marrow Transplantation.
- IVF and infertility treatment.
- Hematology and oncology.
- Dental implants.
- Organ transplants.
- Orthopedics and spine.
-Provide medical treatment services in military hospitals for all citizens and residents in some provinces
(Aqaba, Tafileh governorate).
-Regional role played by the Royal Medical Services by addressing pathological cases transferred from the
brotherly Arab countries.
- Do the pivotal role of the President and in the case of disasters and accidents collective, comprehensive
"transport the injured by helicopter and ambulances.

mission held in the Kingdom.

medical specialties.
In response to the amnesty granted by the RMS, field military hospitals was opened to provide medical
service and in stages to address the people of remote areas not served by the public health sector in the
desert east (Manara area, Cave Monastery and blue) and in Southern Badia (area Qrivrh, Alrajv and Disi) ,
is expected to open another field hospitals as needed.

King Hussein Medical Center is the largest and most prestigious multidisciplinary medical institution in
Jordan dedicated to providing the utmost in patient care and professional training. It is comprised of five

Although a military hospital it offers its services to military personnel and their families as well as civilian
citizens from Jordan and beyond. It has an excellent emergency department with three nearby helipads

Prince Rashed Bin Al-Hassan Military Hospital
Prince Rashid Bin Al-Hassan Hospital (1966) with a capacity of 259 beds, is a general hospital located in
Irbid in the north of Jordan.
It is a teaching hospital for the University of Science and Technology Medical and Nursing students.
It is a very busy hospital with an occupancy rate of 85%, 22 thousand annual admissions and almost 6000
operations a year.

Prince Zaid Bin Al-Hussein Military Hospital
Prince Zaid Bin Al-Hussein Hospital (1992) is the only district general hospital with a capacity of 86 beds. It
is located in Tafileh, south of Jordan and serves the whole population in the region.
This facility has a 6-bed intensive care unit, whereas, the 4-bed emergency section has minor operating
room and a recovery room.
It is a well-equipped modern hospital with Dialysis Unit, Renal Unit, and Out Patient Clinics.
The Physiotherapy section with all the necessary equippnent provides services to people with specil needs
in the region.

Princess Haya Bint Al-Hussein Military Hospital
Princess Haya Hospital (1977) is the only public hospital in the district of Aqaba, a Red Sea port and
resort city.
It has a capacity of 120 beds. In addition to being a district general hospital it houses a Hyperbaric
Chamber that treats diving accidents, and chronic diabetic foot referred for all over the country.
the hospital is equipped with a helicopter pad and always ready for medical evacuation.
Prince Hashem bin Al-Hussein Hospital
Prince Hashem bin Al-Hussein Hospital (1963) is located in Zarqa. It was recently renovated and its
capacity expanded to 200 beds.
Statistics indicate the occupancy rate of this hospital is 70%,16 thousand annual admissions and almost
3600 operations a year.
The 10 renal Dialysis units, laboratory and radiology investigations strongly support all the other medical
services.

Field Medicine:
Is the department that provides primary health care to Jordan Armed Forces personnel including Army,
Air Force and Navy during peace and war with a high standard of efficiency.
In addition to primary care, Field Medicine provides services in aviation medicine, diving and hyperbaric
medicine and preventive medicine. Field medicine is also responsible for deploying field Hospitals /
medical teams to support Peace Keeping Forces and humanitarian missions to disastrous areas.
Aviation medicine
Royal Jordanian Air Force Medical Facility ( RJAF-AF) was established in 1981 at king Abdullah Air
Base, it has comprehensive medical centre in every air base and air defense units , RJAF-AF is
responsible for treatment or referral of patients to military hospitals, ensuring flight status of aviators,
conducting periodic flight physicals, encouraging health awareness, establishing environmental and
occupational hazard prevention programs and taking an active role in aircrew selection and aircraft
accidents investigation boards.
Aero-Medical Evacuation
A well- organized Aero- Medical Evacuation Center was established in 1987, it is the only medical facility
in Jordan responsible for round the clock aero-medical evacuation of military and civilian patients on a
national and international scale. Aero medical evacuation center is manned by flight surgeons, flight
nurses and paramedics and is equipped with advanced and specialize medical kits including a mobile
ICU. The rescue flights utilize both rotary and fixed wing aircraft of the RJAF.
Memorandum of understanding was signed between Royal Medical Services, Jordan Dubai Capital and
Eastern Investment Group Holding to establish aero medical evacuation centers to cover all districts of
Jordan.
Patients have been evacuated from different parts of the World e.g Sudan, Iraq, Sudia Arabia, Germany,
UK, Palestine…..ets.
Physiological Training
The Physiological Training Unit located at King Hussein Medical Centre conducts regular original and
refresher physiological training courses. The program is recognized by the U.S. Air Force to train

national and international aviators, training is carried out by qualified medical and technical personnel,
training devices available include: hypobaric and hyperbaric chambers, night vision trainer, ejection-seat
simulator and disorientation chair.
Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is provided at Princess Haya hospital in Aqaba, a multi-seated hyperbaric
chamber was installed in 1980 to train Navy personnel and to treat diving accident, other medical
conditions needing hyperbaric oxygen therapy such as diabetic foot , burns, CO poisoning , Crush injury
.. are successfully treated in the chamber.
During treatment, a qualified nurse attends the patients inside the chamber while doctors supervise and
monitor the procedures of treatment according to specified tabels.
Preventive Medicine
Implementing occupational health programs and monitoring work place environment for physical,
chemical and biological hazards.
Participation in national health programs and establishing preventive and curative measures for military
personnel deployed abroad.
Establishing and implementing health education, epidemiological investigation and notification of
infectious diseases.
Field hospitals
Field medicine department designed and supervised the building of a mobile field hospital in
collaboration with a local company. The hospital is composed of eight trailers, containing medical and
dentil clinics, tow operation rooms, ICU, two medical wards, pharmacy, laboratory , X-Ray, sterilization,
kitchen and laundaty.
