In the very heart of the areas where the battle between Henry IV and Gregory VII took place, the sculpture ornaments of the Canossa Castle are sometimes in background. The ornaments are made of capitals that express the vernacular Medieval of the Reggio Emilia area and most of all, the beautiful and interestingly multi-perspective baptistry font. It is worth mentioning that the Synoptic Evangelists were sculptured (Mark, Matthew and Luke). B) San Polo d’Enza, Parish Church (Pieve) of Caviano – Phone No.: (0039) 3488109164 A wonderful archeological excavation that tells us all about the transformation of a medieval church. MAP OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF NEVIANO degli ARDUINI (the sculpture itinerary is highlighted in black, Museums with the temple sign) Traversetolo San Polo d’Enza Canossa Badia Cavana Ranzano B) Pieve di Bazzano (Parish (Parish Church): Church Baptistry Font (middle of XII Cent Cent.)- Phone No.: No. (0039) 3493508524 Re-built built over the centuries, it has maintained one of the treasures of Northern Italy Medieval art: a monolith font entirely sculptured around the middle of XII century. It is similar in some ways to the Cathedral of Parma but even more similar to the stonestone-cutters’ cutters’ method in Saint Stephen’s Church in Reggio Emilia. The display display of scenes and interpretations is of great interest. C) Mozzano, Church:: Protomes Protom Two human protomes, protomes, dated perhaps XIII century, were used as an external corner edge of the Church. These are rare examples of Romanesque art that have reached our times within the area of Neviano. A tour at the high altar is highly recommended. D) San Michele Cavana, Cavana Abbey: Capitals and hall lunette (XII Cent.) Cent Still under restoration, restoration, the Abbey is highly appealing for Romanesque lovers. The hall hall, similar in size to the spans of the Parma Cathedral, holds XII century lunettes and capitals masterly sculptured by the same stone-cutters stone cutters of the city Cathedral. The inside is of great interest as it shows an aisle with ambon embedded in the wall wall with crypt. Medieval murals have emerged recently here and in the nearby parish church of Lesignano dè Bagni. Bagni E) Pieve di Sasso (Parish Parish Church): Church baptistery font (XI(XI-XII Cent.) – Phone No.:: (0039) 3477629396 Incredible Romanesque building plunged into a pinewood at the top of a rocky spur lived by mankind from ancient times with a breathtaking view over the Termina of Castione valley. The font inside is a valuable artpiece, sculptured with slabs that date back to XII century and that are connected to the masterworks active in Badia Cavana and in the site of the Cathedral of Parma. F) Moragnano, Chiesa di Santa Giuliana (Saint Juliana’s Church): Lunettes, engravings and protomes The Church of Moragnano is very interesting as it is famous for its engravings set around apses. The lunettes around the portal are also interesting. It is worth visiting also the inside with its epigraphs and engraved architrave. G) Ranzano, Church: Evangelists in the facade, apse protomes and inner capitals – Phone No.: (0039) 0521898181 Slays used for the facade of the Ranzano Church are very interesting. Here we can see the Evangelists, that probably date back to XII and XIII century, where they are also present on the fonts of Bazzano and Canossa on the capitals of Cavana Abbey. In the inside the are some erratic capitals. H) Pieve di Scurano (Parish Church) – Phone No.: (0039) 0521840104 Although it has been reworked over the centuries, the parish Church of Scurano maintains its fascination. Some erratic works prove its ancient origins, whereas the altar piece of the Mazzola family, uncle and aunt of Parmigianino, contributes to confer to the structure an artpiece that deserves to be visited. I) Pieve di Traversetolo (Parish Church): Lunette with Lions The lunette is very interesting for its comparison with the erratic sculptures of the Church in Quattro Castella (Reggio Emilia). Next to the lunette, we can see the head of a demon emerging among the stones of the wall. An erratic capital with mermaids is kept in the rectory. 2- ITINERARY OF MUSEUMS IN NEVIANO DEGLI ARDUINI -Number of museums: 5 -Time required: 1 day -Suggested path: 1, 2, 3… -Topics: anthropology, ethnography, Contemporary art, history - Suggestions for the tour: organise your day agreeing on timetables by dialling the numbers provided -Build up your itinerary: Google Maps -Legend: R = Restaurant 1) Museum of Mankind-Environment (Museo Uomo-Ambiente), Bazzano (R), Via Borgo – Phone No.: (0039) 3334504976 The Museo of Mankind-Environment tells all about the relationship between man and the surrounding environment.
