• Maggi’s dialect plays — and also his dialect poetry
— represent a more nuanced world in which levels
of language reflect social levels of the characters
rather than a simple dichotomy of Italian and dialect
• in this sense the use of dialect in the plays mimics
the sociolinguistic complexity of the world he
inhabited, and this tendency increases in the later
plays
• these moves towards a more realistic representation
of dialect/language interaction imperil a simplistic
opposition between the two

lingua inventata, mescolando il mio dialetto materno

Cinquecento, al gergo dei pittori della scuola lombarda e
perfino al latino tribunalizio degli Inquisitori. Un impasto
che suonasse il più lontano possibile dall’attualità mi è

contadino magico di cui non esiste più traccia, perché
