Around myself Modena, Foro Boario, September 18, 2015 – January 10, 2016 The Fondazione Fotografia Modena is pleased to announce Contemporary Photography from North Western Europe, on display at the Modena Foro Boario from September 18, 2015, through January 10, 2016. The exhibition features the most recent photography purchases by the Fondazione Cassa di risparmio di Modena, which concern north-western Europe and have never been shown before: around 70 works by 19 artists, from Wolfgang Tillmans to Jonny Briggs, which together evoke the vibrancy and heterogeneous nature of the current trends of a geographical area that takes in Germany, the UK and Scandinavia. Core of the exhibition will be an important tribute to Norwegian photographer Tom Sandberg (1953 – 2014), whose works are meant to dialogue with those of other European artists on display. The whole installation is organized by Filippo Maggia, Director of Fondazione Fotografia Modena. Established in 2007, the contemporary photography collection of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena has been enriched piece-by-piece over the years through various series of acquisitions concentrated on different geographical areas: from Africa to the Far East, from the US to South America, and from India to Eastern Europe. The collection currently includes more than 1200 works by almost 200 artists: an exceptionally wide-ranging cultural asset that the Fondazione Fotografia Modena, as a special purpose vehicle, aims to make the most of through its painstaking commitment to cataloguing, conserving and displaying. As before, this new exhibition will feature the same openness that has always been a feature of the collection. The plurality and variety of the artists on show are, then, among the main strengths of this new set of works (to be followed in due course by a second set, concerned with South-Western Europe), encompassing everything from landscapes to portraits, staged photography to snapshots, and even incorporating reportage and installations. The artists deal with a multitude of themes, facing up to the most pressing matters that real life requires us to focus on, and investigating issues linked to the history of the medium of photography and the nature of contemporary images. Contemporary Photography from North Western Europe features works by Morten Andenæs (1979, Norway), Johann Arens (1981, Germany), Jonny Briggs (1985, United Kingdom), Willie Doherty (1959, North Ireland), Annabel Elgar (1971, United Kingdom), Hallgerður Hallgrímsdóttir (1984, Islanda), IlkKa Halso (1965, Finlandia), Sarah Jones (1959, United Kingdom), Sanna Kannisto (1974, Finland), Sandra Kantanen (1974, Finland), Astrid Kruse Jensen (1975, Denmark), Lilly Lulay (1985, Germany), Melissa Moore (1978, United Kingdom), Barbara Probst (1964, Germany), Olivier Richon (1956, Switzerland/ United Kingdom), Tom Sandberg (1953 – 2014, Norway), Trine Søndergaard (1972, Denmark), Wolfgang Tillmans (1968, Germany), Gillian Wearing (1963, United Kingdom). The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Skira. Tom Sandberg. Around myself Born in Narvik in 1953 and prematurely passed away in 2014, Tom Sandberg is one of the most celebrated Norwegian contemporary photographers. The 2007 exhibition at MoMA PS1 entitled Tom Sandberg: Photographs 1989– 2006 brought his work to the attention of the American public and critics, giving an international dimension to a reputation that had already been consolidated in Scandinavia. FONDAZIONE FOTOGRAFIA MODENA via Emilia Centro 283, 41121 Modena tel. 059 239888 | fax 059 4270357 | www.fondazionefotografia.org [email protected] In his thirty-year career, Sandberg almost always worked with large formats and black-and- white film, promoting an idea of pure, direct photography that is rooted in the American photographic tradition of the early twentieth century. Without ever lapsing into strict fanaticism, and maintaining at all times the maximum expressive freedom, the artist inherited from straight photography an attitude of enhancing the aesthetic qualities of the photographic language and reducing to a minimum any editing on the images, such as cropping or manipulations at the developing or printing stages. For Sandberg, photography is a means to experiment with the world in an unhindered, non-hierarchical way. Whether the subject matter is a car parked in the street or the sinuous body of a model, the lush greenery of nature or geometric architectural details, his photographs embody a powerful seductive charge, nourished by the sensitivity that has always marked out the artist’s perspective. In addition, his works are a reflection on photographic vision itself: the formal purity of the images often moves towards abstraction, exposing the viewer to all of the enigmatic power and the potential for mystery implicit in the act of perception and in every form of representation.
