Bernardo Secchi, always combining urban design and architecture for the project of the contemporary city. To accomplish her PhD thesis in 2002 she was Visiting Scholar at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD), Cambridge MA, and took part to the GSD PhD Program proposed by prof. Margaret Crawford. Her research mainly focused on spatial analysis, critique of city planning design tools and theory – in particular the “scenario construction” both as a cognitive practice and proper urban plan, planning proposals for tackling sprawling metropolitan areas in USA and in Northern Italy (the Veneto region), new concepts of infrastructure for water and mobility. Paola Pellegrini has always combined professional practice and academic research; among other professional activities she was involved recently as designer in the “Strategisch Ruimtelijk Structuurplan Antwerpen” (Structural plan of Antwerp, 2004-‘05) and in the “Le grand pari de l’agglomération parisienne, marché de recherche et développement pour l'avenir du Paris métropolitain“ (2008-‘09). From 2005 to 2007 she was research associate at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture at Università degli Studi di Udine (Udine University), where she joined in to develop the general plan for the city of Udine, a middle size town in Italy, in close relation with the city government and to study current possibilities of medium size city planning. Paola Pellegrini is currently temporary Professor at Università IUAV di Venezia, Faculty of Architecture, European Master in Urbanism, and at Università degli Studi di Udine, Faculty of Civil Engineering; she teaches city planning and urban design both to master students and to undergraduate students. 1 EDUCATION june 2003, IUAV – Università IUAV di Venezia, Italy Ph.D. in Urbanistica Thesis: Smart Growth e la costruzione di un diverso scenario per l’America ex-urbana (Smart growth and the construction of a different vision for ex-urban America). Bernardo Secchi RESEARCH Research activity started during the drafting of the final dissertation for the post-graduate degree and since then it has focused on some correlated topics, considered extremely important for the contemporary city: dispersion and proximity in inhabited territories (spatial characteristics, re-conceptualization and design possibilities), scenario construction as a design tool (considered as a “what… if” process), infrastructures of mobility (exploration of more efficient and sustainable systems integrated in the sprawling territory). Research was done at the Department of Urbanistica of Università IUAV di Venezia and at the Department of Civil Engineering of Udine University; sometimes research topics and occasions were nourished by some professional appointments and local governments. may 2008 – november 2009 Municipality of Mantua, Italy Researcher Subject: re-conceptualizing “periphery”: its meaning, its spatial characteristics and social implications in a medium size Italian industrial town, involving citizens in describing past and present and offering new interpretations of current conditions to the city government. Research financed by the French Ministere de l'Equipement, des Transports et du Logement. may 2000 – june 2003 Ph.D. School, Ph.D. Program in Urbanistica, Università IUAV di Venezia, Italy PhD student Subject: USA contemporary ex-urban dynamics, starting from the edge cities concept; visioning processes of some metropolitan areas; contemporary ex-urban design proposals for/against sprawl. The PhD thesis - Smart Growth and the construction of a different vision for ex-urban America - started from the general hypothesis that future has grown more and more uncertain and new planning tools are needed to face contemporary uncertainty and complexity; for this reason “scenarios” and “visions” have become popular in urban planning since the ‘90s. The thesis upheld that scenario and vision belong to the same family of urban planning practices, but are not equivalent in defining their “relation with the future”. Both starts from existing conditions, but a scenario follows a “what is going to happen if…?” argument construction, while for the visioning process the future is a matter of choice rather than a matter of chance. 3 The thesis investigated these tools in sprawling metropolitan areas in USA and upheld that the American dream does not guarantee its promises anymore, urban conditions have changed, many are searching for new solutions. The thesis analyzed ideas, proposals and planning tools for restructuring sprawling metropolitan areas in USA, in particular Smart Growth and visioning processes with their cultural premises. september 2002 – december 2002 Department of Urbanistica, Università IUAV di Venezia, Italy Research fellow Subject: an organized archive of urban designs in / for / against sprawl (un-aware of or accepting or refusing the phenomenon) in the last 10 years in Europe as published in the main architecture and urban design magazines. february 2002 – august 2002 Harvard Graduate School of Design and Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Cambridge, MASS Ph.D. Program in Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning Visiting scholar Subject: US contemporary urban dynamics and the latest restructuring of urban America, under the supervision of prof.
