F R E Q U E N T LY A S K E D Q U E S T I O N S VMware vFabric Application Performance Manager Pricing and Packaging FAQ Licensing Definition Tracking and Compliance Q1.1: On what basis is licensing calculated? Q2.1: How do I track license usage and compliance? A: VMware® vFabric™ Application Performance Manager is priced per virtual machine. You need one Application Performance Manager license for each virtual machine that is part of the application you are managing. Because Application Performance Manager is a bundle of two products (VMware vFabric AppInsight and vFabric Hyperic®), you will receive separate license keys for each product for the number of virtual machines purchased. Although AppInsight and Hyperic integrate their data within the AppInsight dashboard, they have different licensing mechanisms, and Hyperic can be purchased as a standalone product. A: A log file counts the number of virtual machines in your topology, which should correlate with your total number of licenses purchased. Contact your sales team for detailed instructions on how to locate this file in your deployment. Q1.2: Do physical servers factor into the licensing cost? A: For Application Performance Manager 1.0, there is no charge for physical servers. Standalone Hyperic licenses can be purchased separately for monitoring physical servers that are not part of applications managed with Application Performance Manager. Q2.2: What if I exceed my license entitlement? A: Application Performance Manager is designed to assist application owners during scale-up and scale-out. As such, Application Performance Manager does not prevent you from exceeding the available licenses. VMware licensing policy is that customers should buy licenses in advance of use, so we recommend monitoring licensing consumption and extending the available licenses before exceeding it. Contact VMware Sales or your local reseller to purchase more licenses. Products and Entitlements Q1.3: How big can I make my virtual machines? Q3.1: What is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for Application Performance Manager? A: There is no limit to the size of your virtual machines. The amount of CPU and disk space allocated to your virtual machine should be dictated by the needs of your application. A: Application Performance Manager MSRP is USD $360 per virtual machine. Q1.4: What happens to my license when I shut down a virtual machine? A: Your license will be returned to your license pool and can be reused at any time, even in a different location or on a different cloud. Application Performance Manager counts license consumption as the total number of concurrent virtual machines running under management at any time. Q1.5: My application scales dynamically. What number of virtual machines should I use to calculate cost? A: You should calculate the number of virtual machines that your application scales to for peak usage and purchase the maximum number of licenses you anticipate using. Q3.2: Are any other VMware products needed to run it? A: Application Performance Manager requires vCenter™ Server for many of its transaction-monitoring and discovery features. Q3.3: Are any products licensed separately? A: Application Performance Manager requires vCenter Server for many of its transaction-monitoring and discovery features. More information and pricing on this product can be found here. Application Performance Manager is designed to close the loop between operations teams managing the underlying virtual and cloud infrastructure, and the application teams deploying on top of them. For organizations in which collaboration between these two teams is possible, we recommend considering the use of two additional VMware applications: •vCenter Orchestrator – Enables closed-loop workflows to take autoremediation actions when Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are exceeded in Application Performance Manager. vCenter Orchestrator is included at no charge with vCenter. •vCenter Chargeback – Allows cost tracking to help keep application performance in line with application cost.
