“Mediterraneo è Cultura” Association (Mediterranean is Culture) works and operates in Lucera
since January 2003; it is the promoter and the organizing committee of the “Festival della
Letteratura Mediterranea” (Festival of the Mediterranean Literature). The Festival focuses its
attention on the different forms of culture and literature in order to tell the stories of the
people living in the Mediterranean area and to appreciate their lives and souls. After the
turning point of the 10th edition, the Festival launches this year a new exciting course: special
attention is drawn on the new generation of authors, artists and intellectuals.

XI Festival della Letteratura Mediterranea
Irony, a serious thing.

Irony, a serious thing. The 11th edition of the “Festival della Letteratura Mediterranea”
intentionally pick as its own slogan an expression which seems contradictory at a first glance. If
in the past irony meant the use of fiction as a vehicle for knowledge, it is nowadays used – in
common language or as a figure of speech – as an instrument to dissimulate thoughts.
Whether it’d be kind or evil, irony has the power to change words and give them completely
new meanings from time to time. During the centuries, the Mediterranean area has seen wars,
revolutions, economic recessions and social crisis, yet an instinct to move on has always been
present. This instinct was the instrument through which people could tell and analyze events
without losing awareness and can’t be undeceived. Sugar on the pill, comfort in the pain, hope
in the anguish. This is the power of irony. Even today authors and intellectuals “exploit” its
descriptive, therapeutic skills, shaping detailed profiles of the reality we’re living in and giving
away smiles, bitter-tasting smiles, but hopefully oriented to the future. As stated before, irony
is a serious thing.

Sayed Kashua, Israeli Arab author, in conversation with Stefano Lamorgese.
Sayed Kashua (b. 1975) is an Israeli Arab author and journalist born in Tira, Israel. He studied
sociology and philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Author of Dancing Arabs and
Let it be Morning (published in Italy respectively in 2003 and 2005 by Guanda), Kashua writes
satirical columns for Ha’aretz newspaper; he also wrote Avoda Aravit, a satirical sitcom aired on
Israel’s Channel 2. Kashua lives in a Jewis neighborhood of Jerusalem with his wife and
children.
At the “Festival della Letteratura Mediterranea” Kashua will introduce his latest book
translated into Italian as Due in Uno (published by Neri Pozza, 2013).
Stefano Lamorgese (b. 1966), is an Italian journalist, TV author, technologist and multimedia
designer. He works at RaiTv since 1990. He teaches Digital Journalism and he is one of the
founder of the website liberainformazione.org (http://liberainformazione.org) and of the
School of Journalism of Foundation Lelio Basso. He is a professor of literature at the University
of Ferrara. In Jerusalem, he supervised the European project PET-Med (Peace Through the
Media) for a collaboration between Italian, Palestinian and Israeli journalists. He also performs
his weekly column at Rainews24 called “Scenari” (http://scenari.blog.rainews24.it/).

Carlo Carzan, the “Ludomastro” – Italian author of Children’s Literature – meets the pupils
of the elementary schools in Lucera.
Carlo Carzan (b. 1967), according to his own definition, is a “Ludomastro” (“master of the
games”). He founded “Così per gioco” (“just for game”), the first day care centre in Palermo
(Sicily). He is specialized in teachers’ training in day care field, organizing workshops for
children; and he also collaborates with public and private authorities, publishers and cultural
workers. “Così per gioco” association has been awarded with the Premio Andersen in 2009 for
the great number of proposals, creativity and made kids and children aware of their Sicilian
fairy-tale heritage. Among his works, we remember Ri-Animare la lettura (Ed. La Meridiana,
2009), Ti ricordi il calcio? (Sinnos, 2010), Coraggio da lupi (Ed. Paoline, 2013).
At the Festival of the Mediterranean Literature, Carzan will introduce his latest work, La
banda dei Giufà (Mesogea, 2013), illustrated by Lucia Scuderi, “Anderson Award as best
Illustrator” 2013.

Opening of the collective photographic exhibition of “Foto Cine Club Foggia” –BFI.

The exhibition will be open every day from 10 am to 1pm; 5:30 pm to 9 pm until September
22nd.
Thinking about irony in photography, it is impossible not to think of Elliott Erwitt, wellknown member of Magnum Agency, who managed to get smiles from people and to show
reality through its black and white shots. He had a peculiar vision of the world, featuring
characters caught in comic behaviors but always able to create an emphatic relationship
with the observer. Feelings are then captured by the eye of the photographer and mixed
with a touch of humor. The kind of humor that is possible to find in the shots of the
photographers of the Foto Cine Club in Foggia, a very interesting club which has been
awarded by the FIAF (Italian federation of Photographic Associations).
Foto Cine Club Foggia, founded in 1969 by some young photographers from Foggia, has
constantly grow since then. Today it has gained high visibility, consideration and approval
from the public. For its instructive work, Foto Cine Club has been awarded with the title of
B.F.I., Benemerito della Fotografia Italiana (Italian photography meritorious) in 2005, and
between its members there are some A.F.I., Artisti Fotografi Italiani (Italian photography
artists): Felice Alberico, Monica Carbosiero, Alfonso delli Carri, Nicola Loviento, Gerardo
Parrella, Nicola Spadafranca) and two B.F.I. (Enrico Colamaria and Nicola Loviento). Foto
Cine Club organizes photography courses, collaborates with schools, authorities and
associations in many different events and it hosts famous photographers for workshops
and exhibitions.

Barbara De Poli, Italian author, in conversation with Zouhir Louassini
Barbara De Poli teaches History and Institutions of Africa at the Università Ca’ Foscari in
Venice. By reason of research and study, she lived in Arab countries, especially Morocco.
She wrote scientific publications on the relationship between Islam, institutions and society
in the Arab countries, such as Il Mito dell’Oriente e l’espansione massonica italiana nel
Levante, written for Annali di Storia d’Italia, and I musulmani nel terzo millennio. Laicità e
secolarizzazione nel mondo islamico (Carocci, 2007).
At the “Festival della Letteratura Mediterranea” De Poli will introduce Il sorriso della
Mezzaluna. Umorismo, ironia e satira nella cultura araba (Carocci, 2011) of which she’s the
author together with Patrizia Zanelli and Paolo Branca.
Zouhir Louassini was born in Morocco but he currently lives in Rome. He is a journalist for
Rainews24 and visiting professor in many universities, both in Italy and abroad. He
collaborates with Arab newspapers such as al-Hayat, Lakome, al-Alam, and with Radio Medi1
(Morocco). He published many papers on the Arab world in Spanish journals and
newspapers (El Pais, Ideas-Afkar). He is the author of Qatl al-Arabi (“Kill the Arab”) and Fi
AHdan Condoleezza wa bidun khassaer fi al Arwah (“En brazos de Condoleezza pero sin
bajas”), both written in Arab and translated into Spanish.

Maya Zankoul, Lebanese author, in a conversation with Paolo Di Giannantonio
Maya Zankoul (b. 1986) was born in Hasbaya, Lebanon, but she grew up at Jeddah, Saudi
Arabia. In 2005 she moved to her home country Lebanon, where she earned a Bachelor of
Arts in Graphic Design in 2007 from Notre Dame University- Louaize. She is an author, a
cartoonist and a visual artist. In 2009, she started her comic blog, Amalgam, where she
shares illustrations commenting on daily life in Lebanon from a socio-political point of view,
freely speaking of corruption, sexism and social inequalities. Maya Zankoul also
collaborates as an illustrator for The Global Journal, ELLE Oriental and ArabAd; she loves
designing websites and iPhone and iPad apps.
At the “Festival della Letteratura Mediterranea” Maya Zankoul will introduce her two
collections of comics and strips: Amalgam and Amalgam 2 taken from her blog of the same
name and respectively published by “Il Sirente” in Italy in 2011 and 2012.
Paolo Di Giannantonio (b. 1956) has been a journalist of Tg1 for 31 years. He graduated in
Sociology and specialized in Arab Studies at the Università Orientale in Naples. Since
September 9th 2012 he hosts the TV program Unomattina for the third time; he also hosted
TG1 at 1pm and Italia Sera at 11pm. In the last few weeks he dealt with the Egyptian and
Syrian protests for Speciale TG1 and he has always been a specialist reporter, both in Italy
(where he dealt with crime and terrorism matters) and abroad.

Maria Elisa Cianfriglia presents “Vademecum: how to live through your family”.
Literary reading loosely based on the work of Antonio Amurri.
Ironic literary reading loosely inspired by the works of Antonio Amurri, Italian humorist and
author, best known for his tetralogy “Come ammazzare…” (“How to kill … “) . The public
will not see a show, but it will experience a real lesson about living through daily life. We’re
going to have a solution for everyone …
Maria Elisa Cianfriglia (b. 1985 in Rome) attended high school focused on humanities where
she discovered theatre. Since 1999 she is a passionate director and actress. Some of her
works are: “Rumors” by Neil Simon, “Il delitto di Lady Savile” taken from an Oscar Wilde’s
novel, “Due Partite” by Cristina Comencini, “La topastra” and “Alice nel paese dei brutti
sogni” by Stefano Benni.

“Giocare con le parole” (“Playing with words”) – Workshop realised by Pino Imperatore ,
Italian author, for students of high schools in Lucera, with the support of Convitto
Nazionale Ruggero Bonghi.
“Giocare con le parole” it’s a 3-hours funny, interactive and engaging workshop. The
objective is to encourage curiosity and creativity in the students thanks to the extraordinary
opportunities given by the “Ludolinguistica”. The participant will challenge themselves with
anagrams, tautograms, lipograms, palindromes, acrostics, cryptography and much more.

Peppe Fiore and Danilo Cipollini, Italian authors, in a conversation with Christian Raimo.
Peppe Fiore was born in Naples in 1981 and he lives in Rome. He published his collections of
novels “L’attesa di un figlio nella vita di un giovane padre, oggi” (Coniglio, 2005), “Cagnanza e
padronanza” (Gaffi, 2008), and “La futura classe dirigente” (minimum fax, 2009).
At the “Festival della Letteratura Mediterranea “ Fiore will introduce his latest book,
“Nessuno è indispensabile” (Einaudi, 2012)
Danilo Cipollini was born in Rome in 1984 and he won the prize “MarteLive 2011” in the
Literary section. Former aspiring boxer, former aspiring BA, former aspiring sales agent,
former aspiring photographer, at some point he stopped aspiring, he breathed out and
started writing.
At the “Festival della Letteratura Mediterranea” Cipollini will introduce his first book: “La
Didattica dell’Odio” (Bel-Ami Edizioni, 2012)
Christian Raimo currently lives in Rome, where he was born in 1975. He is a consultant for
Nichel e Indi collection by minimum fax publishing house, and he also collaborates with
Laterza. He is one of the author of minima&moralia, the literary blog of minimum fax. With
minimum fax he translated Charles Bukowski and David Foster Wallace, and with Fandango
he translated The golden gate by Vikram Seth, in collaboration with Luca Dresda and
Veronica Raimo. He published two collections of novels: Latte (minimum fax, 2001), Dov’eri
tu quando le stelle del mattino gioivano in coro? (minimum fax, 2004), and Il peso della grazia
(Einaudi Supercoralli, 2012). He published the book 2005 Dopo Cristo (Einaudi Stile Libero,
2005) in collaboration with Francesco Pacifico, Nicola Lagioia and Francesco Longo, under
the pen name of “Babette Factory”. He wrote La solita storia di animali? (Mup, 2006), a
children’s book illustrated by the collective “Serpe in seno”.

“Genius loci – Risveglio di un luogo perduto”
Visual Mapping Performance by Luciano Toriello and Digital Face.
Visual Mapping is a new fascinating frontier in the field of urban art. It consists in showing
computer graphics “images” on real surfaces, such as buildings’ façades and other
architectural structures, finally obtaining spectacular 3D effects. Starting from a previous
study of Castle’s façade, “Genius loci – Risveglio di un luogo perduto” will wake up its soul
for some minutes, telling its story and lighting up a place who sleeps in a state of shameful
abandon. After the first action of urban requalification that took place during the 10th
edition of the Festival with the performance “Le ragioni del viaggio”, “Mediterraneo è
Cultura” association comes today in Castle to make it a place of art and identity for the
entire city of Lucera.
Luciano Toriello was born in Lucera in 1981. He is a visual artist who ranges from cinema to
live visual performances. He filmed three shortmovies – William Blake is my friend (2009),
Vamos a magnar compañeros (2010), Hotel Gallimard (2012) – and a documentary –
Situazione (2013) in which he worked with the director Alessandro Piva for Seminal Film
enterprise, where he is now working for.
Digital Face, based in Rome, it’s a qualified studio in the field of audio/visual productions in
three dimensions (HD-3D Stereoscopic format). Not only they create and produce audio
and visual for TV and cinema, but also they realize storyboards, 3D models, cartoon
animations, motion graphic in HD 3D-stereo.

Pino Imperatore, Italian author, in a conversation with Piero Russo and don Ciro Miele,
responsible for “Libera” Lucera.
Pino Imperatore (b. 1961) was born in Milan. His parents were from Naples, where he
actually works today, while he lives in Aversa. In Naples, he founded the comic and
humorous writing studio “Achille Campanile” in 2001, and since 2005 he is responsible for
Comic Writing section of the Premio Massimo Troisi. He also founded GULP (Post-modern
humorists group). He is a journalist and a publicist, he wrote for newspapers and journals.
He collaborates with radio/TV shows and with many comic actors like Alessandro Siani and
Paolo Caiazzo.
At the “Festival della Letteratura Mediterranea” Imperatore will introduce his first book,
Benvenuti in casa Esposito (Giunti, 2012) followed by the famous Bentornati in casa Esposito
(Giunti, 2013) which rose in ranking and has been awarded with a certain number of
prizes.
Piero Russo (b.1974) is a journalist and a TV host. He is the responsible for the area of
Foggia for La Repubblica newspaper, but he also collaborates with Euronews, Corriere dello
Sport, il Giornale d’Italia, and Telenorba. He filmed “Dalla Parte del Mare”, a
documentary/fiction on Lucio Dalla for which he has been awarded with “Videofestival città
di Udine” prize in 2005 and “Miglior cortometraggio scuole” at the Ariano Film Festival.
Piero Russo also won “Giornalista di Puglia – Michele Campione” award in the cultural
section. He wrote Terra “Bruciata – Peschici, 24 luglio 2007”.

Habib Selmi, Tunisian author, in a conversation with Elisabetta Bartuli.
Habib Selmi was born in Al-‘Ala, near the famous city of Kairouan, in 1951. He published 8
novels and 2 collections of novels. Some of his works have been translated into French,
German, English and Norwegian. In 2009, with the novel “Rawai’h Marie Claire”, and again in
2011 with the novel “Nisa’al-Basatyn” , he has been a finalist of the eminent “Arabic Booker
Prize”. Since 1985 he works and lives in Paris.
At the “Festival della Letteratura Mediterranea” Selmi will introduce “Gli odori di Marie
Claire” (Mesogea, 2013), his first book translated into Italian.
Elisabetta Bartuli (b. 1955, Cairo) is a translator and a professor at Ca’ Foscari in Venice for
the European Master’s degree in “Inter – Mediterranean mediation: investments and
integration”. She is a member of the Master’s degree in “Arab-Italian Literary Translation”
scientific committee at Scuola Superiore Mediatori Linguistici in Vicenza. She translated
many Arab authors’ books, such as: La porta del sole e il viaggio del piccolo Gandhi by Elias
Khuri, L’uovo del gallo by Muhammad Zafzaf. Also, she supervised Racconti di scrittrici
egiziane and Islam e democrazia by Fatima Mernissi, L’infelicità araba by Samir Kassir and Il
gioco dell’oblio by Muhammad Barrada.
