Dear IS Modena families,
Following the recent break-in to one of our parents’ cars in the public parking area outside our school, we have
once again raised awareness with the Carabinieri of Castelnuovo Rangone asking for a more constant patrolling
at pick-up time. We will request a meeting with the Mayor of Castelnuovo Rangone to explore ways of
collaborating on making the public parking area more secure since it is on public grounds and therefore we, as a
school, are limited in what we can do.
Parent/Teacher conferences
Parent/Teacher conferences take place this week. The appointment schedule has been mailed last Friday.
Please make sure you check your time slot and promptly inform our office of any problem. After school
activities not running this week: Chess Club & Chinese.
Friday, December 5th - after school activities & clubs end on Friday, December 5th with the exception of: Terza
Media Math IT, Chess & Good Afternoon club.

Gentili Famiglie IS Modena,
in seguito a recenti episodi di furti ai danni di una macchina di un nostro genitore nel parcheggio pubblico
antistante la scuola, abbiamo ancora una volta informato i Carabinieri di Castelnuovo Rangone chiedendoun il
passaggio più costante della pattuglia all’orario di uscita degli studenti. Richiederemo anche un incontro con il
Sindaco di Castelnuovo Rangone per esplorare modalità di collaborazione per rendere il parcheggio un area più
sicura. Il parcheggio è costruito su un area pubblica, quindi la scuola è molto limitata nel poter prendere
provvedimenti direttamente.
Incontri genitori-insegnanti
Iniziamo questa settimana con gli incontri genitori-insegnanti. Venerdì u.s. abbiamo inviato l’agenda degli
appuntamenti, vi preghiamo di verificare i vs. orari e informare tempestivamente la segreteria qualora vi siano
dei problemi. Attività dopo scuola cancellate questa settimana: Club di Scacchi e Cinese.
Venerdì 5 dicembre – termine attività extra scolastiche & clubs con l’eccezione di Matematica Italiana per la
Terza Media, Club di Scacchi e Good Afternoon.

IB DIPLOMA
UPDATES & NEWS
IB DIPLOMA UPDATE
Over the half-term break, we formally submitted our IB Diploma 'application for authorisation' to the
IB's regional office. Teachers have been busy since September developing 'course outlines' for the
subjects to be offered by IS Modena and several have already attended official IB Diploma Workshops
for the courses that they will be teaching come September 2015.
Furthermore, we have also updated our policies on academic honesty, inclusion, assessment,
language and admissions in order to integrate the requirements of the IB Diploma Programme.
Teachers will be implementing the changes during the course of the remainder of this academic year
(students have also had workshops in their Humanities lessons on the new Academic Honesty Policy)
and they are also available for download from the school website for you to read.
Major areas for investment with a view to DP implementation will be in the library and science labs,
in addition to our building extension which we expect to begin later this month. Our next major
deadline is the 'verification visit' to take place in March 2015.

REMINDERS
Attendance – from the Student/parent Handbook
Learning at the International School of Modena is very interactive, requiring the participation and
interaction of the students with each other and with the teachers. This is adversely affected when a
child is absent – not only for that child in particular but for the dynamics of the whole class.
Of course some absences, such as illness, are unavoidable, but others lie within the family’s priorities.
Please see Extended Absences below.
The Absence forms, in the Home/School Diary, must be completed for a single day of absence or to
cover a period of absence. The Absence forms must be filled out and one part returned to the
school office.
Please remember that if your child has been absent for 6 days or more in a row, a doctor’s note
stating that the child is well enough to attend school must be produced before the child is allowed
to return to school. Weekends add to the total number of days only if they are in the middle of the
sickness time (i.e. a child is sick from Thursday until following Wednesday)
Absences/Tardies
Punctuality is important both as a matter of courtesy and to prevent disruption of classes caused by the
arrival of latecomers. If a student is late she/he misses the important beginning of the school day.
Chronic tardiness prohibits learning for all students. Please show respect for your child’s learning
as well as the other students’ and be on time.
Please refer to the Whole School Behaviour Expectations Document.
If a child is absent or will be late, parents are asked to telephone (or mail) the school before 8:30
and fill out the Late/Early dismissal Absence forms from the Home/School Diary. One part is to be
returned to the office.
Extended Absences
If a student will be away from school for an extended period of time (3 days or more) the parent should
notify the School Manager in writing, by using the Absence forms, stating the dates and reason for the
absence.
Please ensure that at least one week’s notice is given before the extended absence takes place.
Students will be responsible for completing the following during extended absences:
A written daily journal/diary describing their experiences while out of school;
Collecting brochures, maps, ticket stubs, etc. to share upon returning to school;
Any work assigned by the teacher (not all teachers will assign work during absences);
Parents are asked to avoid scheduling family holidays during term time, as it is disruptive to the
student’s progress and to the rest of the class.
Students who miss more than 20 days of school for reasons other than illness will be retained and
will repeat their current grade in the 2014-2015 school year.
Students who miss more than 35 days of school for any reason, illness included, will be retained
and will repeat their current grade in the 2014-2015 school year.
HEALTH & SAFETY
Security
The safety and security of your children is extremely important to us.
All parents and visitors must sign in at the office when entering the school
building and sign out when leaving.
We ask all parents to use the outer parking lot and enter through the small
gate. Please help us in ensuring that the small gate is closed at all times. The
school has an evacuation procedure which will be used in the case of either
fire or other security alert. Regular fire and earthquake drills take place
throughout the school year.
OUR SCHOOL IMPLEMENTS A STRICT NUT-FREE POLICY
No food containing any type of nuts or nut traces is allowed in the school
building at any time.
Please note: Nutella does contain nuts.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping everyone in our school healthy and
safe.
Snacks/Drinks: Please note that students may bring healthy snacks or fruit to
enjoy during their breaks.
Sweets, crisps and high sugar drinks (Coke, Sprite, Ice-Tea) are not
allowed.
No gum is permitted anywhere in the building or on the school grounds.
Early Years students bring only fruit.

UPDATES & NEWS
AGGIORNAMENTI IB DIPLOMA
Nel corso della pausa di metà trimestre, abbiamo formalmente inviato la ‘domanda di
autorizzazione’ all’ufficio regionale IB. Gli insegnanti sono stati impegnati da Settembre nello
sviluppo delle ‘bozze dei programmi’ per le materie che verranno offerte da IS Modena e molti di
loro hanno già partecipato ai workshop ufficiali IB Diploma per le materie che insegneranno a partire
da Settembre 2015.
Inoltre, abbiamo aggiornate le nostre policy sull’onestà accademica, sull’inclusione, sulla
valutazione, sulla lingua e sulle ammissioni per integrare le richieste dell’IB Diploma Programme. Gli
insegnanti implementeranno i cambiamenti nel corso del resto dell’anno scolastico (gli studenti
hanno partecipato ai workshop sulla nuova policy sull’onestà accedemica nel corso delle loro lezioni
di Discipline Umanistiche) e le policy saranno disponibili per il download dal sito web della scuola.
Le aree di maggiore investimento in termini di implementazione del DP saranno la biblioteca e il
laboratorio di scienze, in aggiunta alla nuova ala i cui lavori dovrebbero iniziare entro questo mese.
La nostra prossima scadenza è la ‘visita di verifica’ che si terrà a Marzo 2015.

IMPORTANTE
Frequenza – dal manuale studente/genitore
L’apprendimento all’International School of Modena è molto interattivo e richiede la partecipazione e
l’interazione degli studenti con gli altri e con gli insegnanti. L’assenza del bambino ha un effetto
negativo – non solo per il bambino in sé ma anche per le dinamiche dell’intera classe.
Sicuramente alcune assenza, come la malattia, sono inevitabili ma altre dipendono dalle priorità
famigliari. Vi preghiamo di fare riferimento all’Assenze Prolungate di seguito.
Il modulo delle Assenze, nel Diario scolastico, deve essere compilato anche per un solo giorno di
assenza o per coprire un periodo di assenza. Il modulo delle Assenze deve essere compilato e una
parte deve essere consegnata in segreteria.
Vi ricordiamo che se vostro figlio è assente per più di 6 giorni di fila è necessario fornire un
certificato medico che dichiari la buona salute fisica dello studente prima che gli sia permesso di
rientrare a scuola. I giorni festivi contribuiscono al calcolo dei giorni malattia solo se cadono nel corso
della malattia (per esempio se un bambino è malato da giovedì fino al mercoledì successivo).
Assenze/Ritardi
La puntualità è importante sia per una questione di educazione sia per prevenire l’interruzione delle
lezioni causate dall’arrivo dei ritardatari. Se uno studente è in ritardo perde l’importante inizio della
giornata. Il ritardo cronico impedisce agli studenti di apprendere. Vi chiediamo di rispettare
l’apprendimento di vostro figlio e degli altri studenti e di essere puntuali.
Vi invitiamo a fare riferimento al documento sulle Aspettative di Comportamento di tutta la scuola.
Se un bambino è assente o è in ritardo, i genitori devono informare telefonicamente (o via email) la
segreteria prima delle 8:30 e compilare il modulo di ingresso posticipato/anticipato che si trova nel
libretto delle assenze nel Diario Scolastico. Una parte deve essere consegnata alla segreteria.
Assenze Prolungate
Se uno studente sarà assente da scuola per un periodo esteso (oltre i 3 giorni) il genitore deve informare
per iscritto lo School Manager, usando il modulo delle Assenze, segnalando data e ragione dell’assenza.
Assicuratevi che sia dato un preavviso di almeno una settimana prima dell’assenza prolungata.
Agli studenti sarà richiesto di completare le seguenti attività nel corso dell’assenza prolungata:
Scrivere un diario quotidiano descrivendo le esperienze fatte fuori da scuola;
Raccogliere brochures, mappe, biglietti, ecc. da condividere al rientro a scuola;
Qualsiasi compito assegnato dall’insegnante (non tutti gli insegnanti assegneranno compiti durante le
assenze);
Ai genitori è richiesto di evitare di pianificare vacanze famigliari al di fuori delle vacanze scolastiche
poiché interferisce sul progresso dello studente e della classe.
Gli studenti che perdono più di 20 giorni di scuola per ragioni diverse dalla malattia dovranno
ripetere l’anno frequentato nel 2014-2015.
Gli studenti che perdono più di 35 giorni di scuola per qualsiasi ragione, inclusa la malattia,
dovranno ripetere l’anno frequentato nel 2014-2015.
Salute & Sicurezza
Sicurezza
La sicurezza e l’incolumità dei nostri bambini è estremamente importante.
Tutti i genitori e i visitatori devono registrarsi in segreteria quando entrano
a scuola e devono segnare l’uscita quando escono. Chiediamo a tutti i
genitori di usare il parcheggio esterno e di entrare dal cancellino. Vi
chiediamo di assicurarvi che il cancellino sia sempre chiuso. La scuola ha una
propria procedura di evacuazione in caso di incendio o di altro allarme di
sicurezza. Prove di evacuazione anti-incendio o anti-sismiche vengono
condotte regolarmente nel corso dell’anno scolastico.
NELLA NOSTRA SCUOLA E’ IN VIGORE UN RIGOROSO DIVIETO DI CONSUMO
DI FRUTTA A GUSCIO
Nessun alimento contenente frutta a guscio o tracce di frutta a guscio è
ammesso nell’edificio scolastico in qualsiasi momento.
NB: la Nutella contiene frutta a guscio.
Ringraziamo per la cooperazione nel mantenere un ambiente sano e sicuro
per tutti.
Merende/bevande: si prega di notare che gli studenti possono portare
merende sane o frutta da gustare durante le ricreazioni.
Caramelle, patatine e bevande gassate (Cola, Sprite e The Freddo) non
sono consentiti.
Non è permesso consumare gomme da masticare all’interno e all’esterno
della scuola.
Gli studenti delle Materne portano solo frutta.

WINTER FAIR 2014
UPDATES
Saturday, November 29
Dear ISM families,
You will all by now have read in the school newsletter all about the upcoming Winter Fair, which is our annual celebration
of our unique international community here at ISM. In order to make it a successful and enjoyable day, we look to
everyone within the ISM community who intends to come to the Fair to join together in contributing food and helping out
in a small way.
International Buffet
The biggest part of the Fair is our International Buffet, which provides all of our different nation groups the opportunity to
share some of their favourite national food with the rest of the ISM community. Therefore, we need every family who is
planning to attend the Fair to contribute a dish (or 2) of food (either home-cooked or shop bought) on the day so that we
have plenty to go round and do not leave anyone hungry!
This year we have appointed 3 Buffet co-ordinators whom you should contact at your earliest opportunity to discuss your
preferred contribution:
Finger foods and side dishes: Jessica Borgeais (tel. 347 365 1578 or [email protected])
Main dishes: Elisa Osella Bon (tel. 347 140 0019 or [email protected])
Desserts: Annika Kristoffersson (tel. 349 457 1495 or [email protected]
Please aim to provide enough of any dish(es) for 8-10 servings, remembering that there should be NO NUTS OR NUT
PRODUCTS used. Also, you should provide a list of ingredients to be displayed with the food (as we have people within the
ISM community with food allergies), and ideally, bring your dish in a disposable container (or clearly labelled container with
appropriate serving cutlery, again clearly labelled). If you require any further information or clarification, please contact
either the co-ordinators as detailed above or your Class Representative.
Jam Jar Hoopla
This is probably the most popular children's activity at the Fair and so we need lots and lots of jars! Therefore, if you have
any empty glass or plastic jars at home, please wash them and fill them with something suitable for a child (examples
include candies, lego, hairbands, chocolates, marbles, etc). If you have time, you may also want to decorate them to make
them attractive for the children to win. Again, as we have over 180 children in the school, if you are intending to attend,
please ensure that you send in some filled jars as soon as possible. There will shortly be a collection box in the school
reception area for them, together with another box which will contain empty jars for you to collect and use if you do not
have any at home. Again, contact your Class Representative if you need any further information.
Festive Song concert
This has become our traditional way of ending the Fair, and we try to get as many of our children (and adults) involved
in singing together a traditional festive national song for the rest of the community to enjoy. Please refer to the previous
email from Claudia Schmitz for all of the relevant details or contact her direct (tel. 342 087 0050 or [email protected]) to get yourself and/or your children involved in this fun festive activity.
Tickets
The cost of admission is €10.00 per adult with no charge for children. We will be selling tickets during the upcoming
parent/teacher conferences on 18 and 20 November and then at every morning drop-off and afternoon pick up from
Monday 24 November until Friday 28 November. Please note that due to italian financial legislation, all tickets MUST be
purchased BEFORE the Fair and CANNOT be purchased on the day of the Fair itself. If you cannot come into school
yourself to purchase tickets, please contact your Class Representative who will help.
Setting up / Helping on the day /Clearing up
Many hands make light work, and so it would be great if as many people as possible can spare a few minutes (only 30
minutes or so) helping out before, during and / or after the Fair, in order that we "share the load" equally as a
community. Therefore, if you can help, to find out more, please attend the next PTA meeting being held on Tuesday 18
November at 1.00pm at school, contact Louise Salters, PTA Chairperson (tel. 331 815 4309 [email protected]),
contact your Class Representative or write your name on the Winter Fair sign-up sheet that will be put up on the PTA
notice board by the end of the week.

FESTA D’INVERNO 2014
SABATO 29 NOVEMBRE
AGGIORNAMENTI
Cari Genitori,
Avrete certamente tutti letto nella newsletter scolastica dell’imminente Festa d’Inverno che è la celebrazione annuale della
nostra comunità internazionale qui all’ISM. Per far sì che sia una giornata ben riuscita e piacevole, abbiamo bisogno
dell’aiuto di chiunque, all’interno della comunità ISM, possa venire alla Festa fornendo cibo e aiutando in tanti piccoli modi.
Buffet Internazionale
La parte più grande della nostra Festa è il nostro Buffet Internazionale, che da l’opportunità a tutte le nazionalità
rappresentate all’ISM di condividere il piatto nazionale preferito con il resto della comunità ISM. Quindi, abbiamo bisogno
che ogni famiglia che pensa di partecipare alla Festa contribuisca con un piatto (o 2) di cibo (o preparato in casa o
acquistato) il giorno della Festa in modo che ci sia cibo a sufficienza per tutti e nessuno resti affamato!
Quest’anno abbiamo nominato 3 coordinatori del Buffett che dovrete contattare il prima possibile per concordare il Vostro
contributo:

Per favore cercate di preparare o fornire almeno 8-10 portate per ogni pietanza, ricordando che non devono essere usate
NOCI o NOCCIOLE o FRUTTA A GUSCIO. Inoltre, dovrete fornire una lista di ingredienti da mostrare con il cibo (poiché ci
sono casi di allergie alimentari nella comunità ISM) e, idealmente, portare il cibo in un contenitore usa e getta (o in un
contenitore con etichetta riportante il Vostro nome, devono essere etichettate anche le posate che servono
all’impiattamento, se necessarie). Se avete bisogno di ulteriori informazioni o chiarimenti, contattate le coordinatrice
sopracitate o la Vostra Rappresentante di Classe.
Gioco dei Barattoli di Marmellata
Si tratta dell’attività più popolare tra i bambini alla Festa e quindi abbiamo bisogno di tanti, tantissimi barattoli! Quindi, se
avete barattoli di vetro o di plastica vuoti a casa, lavateli e riempiteli con qualcosa di adatto ad un bambino (ad esempio,
caramelle, lego, decorazioni per capelli, cioccolatini, biglie,…). Se avete tempo, potete inoltre decorarle per renderle più
attraenti per i bambini che se le vogliono aggiudicare. Ancora una volta, poiché abbiamo più di 180 bambini a scuola, se
volete partecipare alla Festa, consegnate a scuola i barattoli pieni il prima possibile. A breve ci sarà uno scatolone nell’atrio
in cui raccogliere le donazioni, insieme ad un altro scatolone con i barattoli vuoti da prendere in caso non ne abbiate a casa.
Ancora una volta, per qualsiasi domanda contattate la Vostra Rappresentante di Classe.
Concerto di Canti Festivi
Questo è diventato il nostro modo di concludere la Festa e cerchiamo di coinvolgere quanti più bambini (e adulti) possibile
nei canti delle feste del proprio paese di origine così che il resto della comunità ISM lo possa gradire. Per favore fate
riferimento alla precedente email da parte di Claudia Schmitz per le principali informazioni o contattatela direttamente (tel.
342 087 0050 [email protected]) per partecipare Voi stessi e far partecipare i bambini in questa fantastica attività
festiva.
Biglietti
Il biglietto di ingresso costa 10€ per gli adulti ed è gratuito per tutti i bambini. Venderemo i biglietti nel corso dei prossimi
colloqui Genitore/Insegnante il 18 e 20 Novembre e poi ogni mattina all’ingresso a scuola e ogni pomeriggio all’uscita a
partire da lunedì 24 novembre fino al 28 novembre. Per favore, ricordate che in base alle legislazione fiscale italiana, tutti i
biglietti DEVONO essere acquistati PRIMA della Festa e NON POTRANNO essere acquistati il giorno della Festa. Se non
potete venire a scuola a comprare i biglietti, contattate la Vostra Rappresentante di Classe che Vi aiuterà.
Allestimento / Aiuto / Riordino
Più siamo, meno lavoro per tutti, quindi sarebbe fantastico se quanti più possibile potessero dedicare pochi minuti (anche
solo 30 minuti) ad aiutarci prima, durante e/o dopo la Festa in modo da condividere la responsabilità equamente nella
comunità. Quindi, se potete aiutare, per avere maggiori informazioni, partecipate all’incontro del PTA il prossimo martedì
18 novembre alle 13:00 a scuola, contattate Louise Salters, la presidente del PTA (tel. 331 815 4309
or [email protected]), la Vostra Rappresentante di Classe o scrivete il Vostro nome del modulo di iscrizione della
Festa d’Inverno che sarà esposto sul pannello del PTA al termine di questa settimana.

REMINDERS
School activity starts at 8:30!
We kindly remind you that school days start at 8:30 sharp. Which means the school activity will
begin exactly at 8:30 and any late comers will be disrupting class. Please try to make an effort and
come in before 8:30 am, children can be dropped off from 8:10 onwards.
L’attività accademica inizia alle 8:30!
Vi ricordiamo che le lezioni iniziano alle 8.30 in punto. Ciò significa che le attività didattiche della
giornata iniziano proprio alle 8:30 e qualsiasi ritardatario si ritroverà ad interrompere
inevitabilmente il lavoro della classe. Vi invitiamo a cercare di arrivare prima delle 8.30, vi
ricordiamo che gli studenti possono arrivare dalle 8:10 in avanti.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
Students are expected to wear the school uniform which consists of a blue polo shirt and a blue
sweatshirt. Students can wear the short sleeved polo shirt and winter jacket on top for outdoor
activities. Please make sure your children refrain from wearing personal sweatshirts, cardigans or
jumpers. Please refer to the Student-Parent Handbook for further information.
DIVISA DELLA SCUOLA
Gli studenti devono indossare la divisa della scuola composta da una polo a manica lunga e/o corta
e felpa blue. Gli studenti possono indossare la polo a maniche corte sotto al giaccone per le
attività esterne. Vi preghiamo di assicurarvi che i vs. figli non vengano a scuola con felpe, cardigan
e/o maglioni personali. Vi invitiamo a consultare lo Student-Parent Handbook per ulteriori
informazioni.
PARKING AREA
All parents must use the public parking area outside the school gate at all times.
Please remember to lock your cars and please make sure you don’t leave any personal belongings in
the car.
Internal parking area is reserved for staff only and the bus service.
PARCHEGGIO ESTERNO
Tutti i genitori devono utilizzare sempre il parcheggio all’esterno del cancello. Ricordatevi di
chiudere le portiere dell’auto e non lasciate borse e borsette in macchina. Il parcheggio interno è
riservato allo staff e ai bus scolastici.
