The Regione Piemonte’s new ‘Infoneve’ service is a snow information service organized
by the regional administration and offers all the necessary information to plan a skiing
week, a weekend or a day on the slopes. All you have to do is register in the “Skiing in
Piedmont” section of the site www.regione.piemonte.it/turismo and you will receive text
messages and e-mails with information concerning resorts, connections, accommodation, characteristics of the pistes and of the facilities for alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboard and luge, prices, “après-ski” opportunities and free time
activities, weather and snow reports and special offers.

The Olympic System of Torino 2006

Turin, a centre for sports on ice, with additional facilities at the foot of the mountains
in Pinerolo, and an alpine area for snow
sports based in Sestriere. They are connected by a motorway, two state roads and two
railway lines – to ensure that the distances
comply with Olympic standards and with the
requirements of the IOC. The Turin 2006

Olympic System has a compact and functional form, appreciated by the IOC and by
international Sports Federations. In Turin,
the “Olympic District”, centred in the
Lingotto area, will be the location of the
Olympic Village, of sporting facilities for
hockey, speed skating, figure skating and
short-track racing, as well as of the Olympic

Motorways
An area dedicated to snow sports in
Sestriere and Pragelato and a more
urban setting for sports on ice in Turin
with additional facilities at the foot of
the mountains, in Pinerolo, for curling,
a discipline included for the first time in

the Paralympic Games. Multiple connections by means of motorways, state
roads, and railways shorten the distances and provide services of the highest quality. The Paralympic System of
Turin 2006 is functional: athletes will be
accommodated in the Sestriere Village
while the hockey team may also be
accommodated in Turin. The Paralympic
family will be in Sestriere as well as the
press centre. Disciplines: alpine skiing
will take place entirely in Sestriere,
Pragelato will host cross-country skiing
and biathlon competitions, while ice
hockey matches will take place in Turin
on the “Torino Esposizioni” premises
and the curling tournament will be held
in Pinerolo.

The Susa and Chisone Valleys
Montagnedoc is a district that stretches
over the Susa Valley and the Pinerolo
area with 1,500 km2 of slopes surrounded by natural landscapes that are
unique in the world. Those who have a
passion for snow sports can choose from
pistes of a variety of level, slopes with
lighting installations for night-time skiing and powder snow tracks for off-piste
excursions. Sports lovers can also practise: cross-country skiing, telemark skiing, snowboarding, ice-climbing, freeriding, ski mountaineering, trekking on
horses, dog-sledding with Siberian
Husky dogs, paraskiing and heli-skiing.
The Montagnedoc area offers the best in
winter sports as well as many relaxing
and enjoyable leisure activities. Visitors
have the opportunity to discover the
local history, traditions, arts and crafts
of old, costumes, enological and gastronomic specialties and truly exceptional
typical products.

SKIING
Sestriere, located at an altitude of 2.035
m on a mountain range of the same
name, overlooks the Chisone and Susa
Valleys and was the first truly modern
Italian skiing resort. It was set up in
1937 by the Agnelli family, and is now
an outstanding spot for snow sports
enthusiasts. Part of the “Milky Way”
skiing district and well-renowned
worldwide, the area offers 146 different
pistes provided with 92 lift facilities,
400 km of slopes, of which 80 km are
covered in artificial snow using 950
cannons. It is also possible to reach 5
other skiing resorts or to ski at night
thanks to floodlight installations. From
the easier slopes to the more challenging
off-piste tracks, from ski mountaineering to cross-country skiing, everyone

Prali is a skiing resort in the Germanasca
Valley and today it still preserves many
features typical of an Alpine village.
Surrounded by magnificent natural
scenery at an altitude of 1,450 m, Prali
offers 7 lift facilities, 25 km of slopes and
a cross-country skiing ring of 15 km in
length. Off-piste skiing tracks, dog-sledding, excursions on foot or with snowshoes, figure skating and ice-climbing
facilities are among the other available
services. After a day on the slopes, visitors can enjoy several recreational activities. There are museums on the
Waldensian traditions: the one in Prali
concerns their history and culture, the
one in Rodoretto is based on work and
life in the mountains and the museum in
Balsiglia is about the glorious return of
the Waldenses from exile in 1689.
Visitors can also board a little train that
travels through the mountains and takes
them to “Scopriminiera”, a modern

tourist and museum centre where you
can learn more about the traditional
mining activities of the local valleys.
Moreover, enological-gastronomic tours
to discover Waldensian dishes and products typical of mountain agriculture are
available for lovers of good food.

Prato Nevoso, located 1500 m above sea
level in the Borough of Frabosa Sottana
(CN), overlooks a wide set of slopes and
offers a skiing area with over 100 Km of
pistes, partially made with artificial
snow, which reach an altitude of 2000 m
and are provided with 24 lift facilities.
Skiing schools, a snow park, pistes with
lighting installations for nighttime skiing,
a cross-country skiing ring, a skating
rink, ice carting, snowmobiles and several ski mountaineering facilities make for
a true Ski-total resort, capable of catering for the needs of each and every
sportsperson. Thanks to its geographic
location, between Monte Mondolè and
Monte Moro, and to the supreme exposure of its slopes, the presence of powder
snow is guaranteed throughout the season, a feature very much appreciated

the Borough of Frabosa Sottana (Cuneo),
Artesina is part of the Mondolè Ski
district that offers 90 km of pistes serviced by 25 lift facilities. It is included
among the Ski-total locations as since its
pistes are capable of satisfying the needs
and preferences of all types of skier. All
sportspeople, from beginners to experts,
will find the run that is most suited to
their skills because there are many
pistes at Artesina of varying degrees of
difficulty, from the easiest, such as the
Costabella piste, ideal for beginners, or
those at Colletto, Turra, Pogliola, to the
most challenging, such as the Rocche
Giardina, Mirafiori and Mondolè pistes,
and the piste connecting Colle Bauzano
to Cima Durand. The bravest can put
themselves to the test on the Black Piste
that runs down for 450 m from the

Limone Piemonte, Limonetto and
Quota 1400 are the three centres of the
Riserva Bianca skiing district. Located
at the foot of the Colle di Tenda mountain range in the Maritime Alps, the area
offers 80 km of slopes for alpine skiing
with natural snow from December to
April and 20 km of pistes with artificial
snow-making installations. There are 25
lift facilities and visitors have the opportunity to practise all kinds of winter
sports or relax in one of the many
refreshment areas along the pistes. The
slopes of Riserva Bianca have different
lengths and various levels of difficulty,

Vermenagna Valley. Limone is also a
paradise for ski mountaineering with
excursions of various lengths and levels
of difficulty. Tracks unfold along slopes
and peaks that are well known among
lovers of this discipline, such as Cima
Fascia and Vallone San Giovanni with
the Cima Pepino peak, where skiers can
enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the
Piedmontese plains, the Ligurian Sea
and Corsica. Those who practise ski
mountaineering will also appreciate
Rocca dell’Abisso, Monte Chiamossero
and Monte Creusa, from where they can
begin their descent down the Val Grande
di Vernante. The most famous slopes in
the Riserva Bianca area are: the Olympic
Piste on Monte Alpetta, the Cabanaira,
the Macchetto and the Giorgio Armand.

Limone Piemonte
The Cuneo Valleys
Since the times of the Roman Empire,
Limone Piemonte has owed its fame to
its geographical position. Located along
the main road that links Piedmont, the
plain and Liguria, Limone was already
a well-established tourist resort at the
beginning of the 1900s. Many remnants
from the past and characteristics traits
of a classic alpine village are still visible
in the town centre, such as remains of
the ancient Roman Road leading to
Limonetto and to the Col di Tenda pass.
Surrounded by parks and nature
reserves with fauna and flora that are
varied and plentiful thanks to a mild
alpine climate, proud of its culture and
of its native tongue of Provençal origins,
Limone offers various recreational
activities to those who sojourn there.
Besides the Piedmontese cuisine served
in various typical restaurants, visitors
can taste dishes that are simple but prepared with great care, based on local
natural resources, such as “polenta”
made with buckwheat flour, game,
mushrooms and fruits of the forest.

Park of Alta Valle Pesio and Tanaro and
dominated by the calcareous massif of

Nordic skiing, more than one courses of
gradual difficulty and length.
The local Marguareis Sport Centre, in
fact, has got a 5 Km FISI homologated
slope, a 10 Km tourist one that go
through Certosa and a 30 Km slope that
from Certosa arrives to Pian del Gorre.
The Centre is supplied with various
facilities such as: bar, lunch bar, typical
restaurant, and it offers the possibility
to rent skis and ice skates. Moreover,
alpine skiing, ice skating, excursions
with snowshoes, and the opening soon
centre dedicated to biathlon, complete
the offer of this resort.
Finally, the Pian della Gorre and del
Garelli refuges are a referring point for
those who are keen on touring and
mountain climbing.

The skiing location of Garessio 2000, on
the Colle Casotto mountain range, overlooks two valleys and from the top of
Monte Berlino skiers can take in a stunning
view of the Western Ligurian Sea. There
are 5 lift facilities servicing around 30 km
of downhill pistes. Besides ski mountaineering, lovers of newer sports such as
snowboarding, or of traditional ones, such
as carving, can attend courses given by
local instructors. Here is how Giorgetto
Giugiaro, ambassador of Italian design in
the world, describes his homeland: “An
emerald green valley that conquers you
with its waters and discreetness. It is
appreciated only by connoisseurs, who love
simple things like the local cuisine and the

The Cantarana Ormea Cross-country
Skiing Centre, in Alta Val Tanaro, is the
southernmost cross-country skiing centre
in the Alps. Placed close to Ormea, in a
very
suggestive
environment,
the
Cantarana Ormea Cross-country Skiing
Centre gives the chance to chose between
slopes of various levels of difficulty. There
are slopes suitable for beginners and expert
skiers and also slopes more right for those
who practice the cross-country skiing at a
competitive level. The slopes, prepared
with modern mechanic means, offer the
possibility to use both the classical and the
free technique. Moreover, since last year, a
2 km ring has been traced. Thanks to an
artificial snow system, it can be used even
without precipitations. The Centre is man52
aged by the Ormea Ski Club members, who
are available for those who want to practice
this sport. In addiction there is a proper
structure built to be the centre operative
base, that offers the possibility to use a
changing room and to rent the necessary
equipment. The slope, normally, is open all
weekends – from middle December – and
all days during the Christmas holidays. But
it is also possible, previous phone call, to
request the opening during the week for
groups or students. Moreover, at Briga Alta
municipal district, at an altitude of 1.329
metres, in Upega resort, there are 2
cross-country skiing slopes. The main one
has a total length of 5 Km and goes
through an impressive conifers wood, while
the second ring is close to the Negrone

Entracque, located 904 m above sea
level, stands in the centre of a natural
amphitheatre surrounded by peaks
higher than 3000 metres, including the
famous Argentera (3297 m) and Gelas
with its glaciers. Near the village are 5
alpine skiing areas, serviced by 4 lift
facilities at the “Viver SkiLifts”, all of
which are suitable for beginners and
families. There are also several afterskiing recreational facilities, while the
Nordic skiing area of Gelas, with over
40 Km of regularly beaten tracks, is able
to satisfy even the most demanding
cross-country skiers. Among these, the
so-called ‘Feit’ piste, complying with
FISI (Italian Federation of Winter
Sports) standards for international competitions, is provided with artificial
snowmaking equipment and therefore

Festiona, a small site in the Borough of
Demonte in the Stura Valley, fully
deserves to be regarded as the capital of
cross-country skiing in Piedmont. The
Festiona Cross-Country Centre is surrounded by a breathtaking landscape
that can be appreciated by skiing along
its 40 km of pistes. The tracks make up
7 different rings with various geomorphologic features and different levels of
difficulty, perfectly suited to learning
basic techniques and providing complete and effective training for both
tourists and athletes preparing for professional competitions. The pistes
unwind among age-old chestnut trees
and allow professionals as well as lovers
of cross-country to enjoy their sporting
activities surrounded by a truly
unspoiled natural setting. The instructors of the “Festiona Valle Stura” ski
school, certified by the Region of
Piedmont, help skiers to improve their
skills, while the Cross-Country Centre
employs specialised instructors for the
disabled. In your free time do not miss a
visit to Demonte, the main town of the

The Aisone – Vinadio Cross-Country
Centre, with over 50 Km of slopes,
draws the attention of thousands of
Nordic skiers every year. Starting from
the Cross-Country Centre, located in the
plain of Aisone at the foot of the distinctive embankment that supports the
village, you can reach Vinadio and
without taking your skies off you can
access the ramparts of Forte Albertino.
Several tracks allow tourists to enjoy a
wonderful view of the highest peaks of
the valley and their various degrees of
difficulty cater for beginners and experienced skiers alike. A most interesting
itinerary for off-piste lovers unwinds
through the Valletta gully and leads to
Pinet, located within the Park of the
Marittime Alps.

The slopes of Bagni di Vinadio start
from the alpine village of Strepeis and
unwind through a stirring and wild
land, among forest of fir, larch and pine
trees. Nearby are spa facilities built in
the mid 17th Century, with hot
sulphurous waters used for several
health treatments. Thanks to these
features Bagni di Vinadio has become
a well-renowned tourist resort appreciated by those who enjoy Nordic skiing
as well as ski mountaineering excursions
through the numerous surrounding
gullies. The sports centre, dedicated to
local Olympic athlete Giulietto Gerardi,
boasts 5 rings of different lengths,
operational even when the snowfall is
scarce. Skiers should not miss the track
that leads from Bagni to San Bernolfo,
a small village with unique architectural features such as houses with original
straw roofs and walls made of interlocked tree trunks.

The “Scricciolo” Cross-Country Centre
in Pietraporzio boasts tracks unwinding
through forests of fir trees and high
plains in a wild and charming natural
environment. When she was a child,
the Italian champion Stefania Belmondo
learnt to ski on these mountains and she
still trains here rather frequently during
the winter. The pistes stretch around
the village of Pontebernardo, location of
the Eco-museum of Stock-raising, and
allow skiers to reach the hamlet of
Sambuco and to pass the ancient bell
tower of San Bartolomeo, rising against
the steep sides of Mount Bersaio.
The most interesting skiing ring of the
area is located in Pian della Regina,
a plain surrounded by a wonderful
amphitheatre of imposing peaks.
However, the true highlight of the area
is ski mountaineering with several fascinating itineraries, among which those
leading to Mount Vaccia, the Piz Gully
and the Balour Plain.

The high Valley of Stura di Demonte
is the location of an alpine skiing
station, renowned for the excellent quality and abundance of its snow and for
the typical alpine landscape that
surrounds it. The pistes unwind along
slopes covered in larch trees overlooking
the river Stura and the surrounding
alpine landscape is truly stirring. The
total length of the pistes is over 30 Km
and they are appropriate for each and
every need and all levels of skill. Some
tracks are suited to competitions of all
kinds and the off-piste tracks stretching
from the peak of Mount Enchastraye
and leading to Argentera and Prinardo
are extremely rewarding.

Crissolo - Pian Muné - Rucas
Crissolo – Pian Regina. This is the skiing resort of Monviso; it is located at the
foot of the “King of Stone”, in close
proximity to the sources of the river Po,
whose first stretch runs along the pistes.
A handy chair lift departs from the centre of Crissolo and reaches the skiing
facilities further up, from where it is
possible to ski to Pian Regina, a GTA
(Great Alpine Crossing) staging post.
Here you will find a cross-country skiing ring, 3 Km in length, located 1,745
m above sea level, which can also be
reached by car, another 4.5 Km past the
village of Crissolo. Accommodation
facilities, restaurants and an ice-skating
rink are located in the village.
Pian Muné – Paesana. “A white terrace
overlooking the plain” is the definition
given to the panoramic skiing resort of
Paesana due to its breathtaking view of
the arch of the Piedmontese Alps, with
the towering outline of Monviso, and
the plain. The skiing facilities are 14
Km away from the village of Paesana
and can be easily reached via a wide and
secure road. A cross-country skiing ring
of around 3 Km in length is available.

The Varaita Valley offers numerous
downhill slopes of easy and medium difficulty that are suitable for all skiers but
in particular children and beginners. The
skiing facilities are located in Sampeyre,
Bellino and, above all, in Pontechianale,
where a chair lift carries visitors up to
2,670 m. Cross-country skiing tracks of
all levels of difficulty unwinding for a
total of 100 km are also available.
Besides those of Bellino, Chianale,
Casteldelfino and Sampeyre, the most
extensive runs are in Valmala. On the
peaks around Sampeyre or in the gullies
of Chianale and Bellino, lovers of ski
mountaineering can choose several different itineraries, while climbers will
enjoy some of the best ice waterfalls in
the Alpine chain.

Valsesia, overlooked by the towering
Monte Rosa Massif, is a valley located
between the steep mountains of Valle
d’Aosta to the west and a wide glacial
valley to the east, whose lower part is
filled with the waters of Lake Orta.
Along the northern ridge of Monte Rosa
that separates Valsesia from Valle
Anzasca and Valstrona you will find the
valleys of Sermenza and Mastallone,
whose higher slopes are home to striking
tourist resorts such as Rima S.
Giuseppe, Carcoforo, Fobello, Cervatto
and Rimella. The valleys located along
the southwestern ridge, bordering with
the Gressoney Valley and the Biella area,
are from north to south: Otro, Vogna,
Artogna and Gronda. Varallo Sesia is
the main urban centre in the valley of
the same name and it is famous for its
religious constructions, including the
very famous Sacro Monte (Holy Mount)
Sanctuary towering over the town. The
neighbouring territories boast prominent industrial and commercial towns
and villages, renowned all over the
world for textile industries that produce
top-quality cashmere fabrics. Valsesia is
a much appreciated tourist area due to
the unrivalled beauty of its landscapes
and to the endless variety of attractions
and activities available to sports lovers
and visitors in general. Valsesia has preserved all its most authentic features
and it is a place where nature comes
together with arts and traditions deriving from the rich and enchanting

Facilities
Alagna (1192 m) is the most prominent
skiing resort in Valsesia. From the Punta
Indren peak, you can enjoy a view over
Monviso, Gran Paradiso, Mont Blanc and
the pinnacles of Monte Rosa with the
magnificent Lyskamm. The new lift
facilities along the Valsesia side of Monte
Rosa are part of a wide skiing area that
includes the interconnected slopes of the
Sesia Valleys (Piedmont) and of the Ayas
and Gressoney Valleys (Valle d’Aosta).
The project, operational from December
2003, enables sports lovers to choose
from among dozens of pistes, connected
by means of several lift facilities and
providing for the needs of highly skilled
skiers, lovers of off-piste and telemark
skiing as well as families. An eight-seater
box lift, carrying up to 1400 passengers
per hour, connects Alagna to Pianalunga
(2025 m). From here it is possible to
reach Passo dei Salati, a pass that leads
to the lift facilities of Gressoney by
means of a “Funifor” cable car, with a

capacity of 800 people an hour and
capable of covering a difference in altitude of 900 m in just 6 minutes. The
starting point stands at an altitude of
2100 m, the arrival station at 3000 m
and an intermediate stop at 2650 m will
soon be ready. New facilities will bring
skiers from Passo dei Salati to the
glaciers of Monte Rosa. Meanwhile,
the Punta Indren panoramic spot can be
reached by using the last stretch of the
already operational cable car. When getting off the box lift of Pianalunga, visitors ascend to Bocchetta delle Pisse
(2396 m) by boarding a two-seater chair
lift. From here, they travel onboard a
cable car to Punta Indren, at an altitude
of 3260 m. The resort is equipped with
ski lifts and another cable car and offers
a selection of over 22 Km of pistes of all
difficulty levels spread throughout the
Valsesia area and ranging between altitudes of 1200 m and 3260 m.

Monte Rosa mountain range is the ideal
area for ski mountaineering, which
brings sportspeople in contact with the
true aspects of the mountains. Ascents
with sealskins for skiers or with snowshoes for snowboarders are challenging
but offer magnificent views. An ideal
location for ski and snowboard mountaineering is the Alta Valsesia Natural
Park where the Gnifetti Peak, on the
Monte Rosa Massif, reaches 4,559 m
making this the highest park in Europe.

Alagna Valsesia is a true snow paradise. Beginners have the chance to learn
skiing techniques and new disciplines
in complete safety on the blue pistes of
the Wold area, covered with artificial
snow and only 500 m away from the
centre of the village. Cross-country skiing enthusiasts will appreciate the ring
of the “Marmotta Rosa” Cross-country
Centre in Riva Valdobbia, a 10-Kmlong track ideal for each and every
need. Those who like off-piste on powder snow can choose from among an
endless selection of tracks, partially
unexplored. Steep gullies or wide

Scopello (659 m) is a welcoming skiing
resort crossed by the River Sesia and
located in the centre of Valgrande. The
Scopello Alpe di Mera (1,550 m) skiing district is one of the main attractions
of the area. It stands on a wonderful
plateau overlooking the Monte Rosa
Massif and it can be reached by boarding a chair lift or by travelling on the
road that leads to the open spaces of
Trogo, right beside the slopes. Visitors
do not need to take their skis off to
access hotels, restaurants, shops and
cafés. Alpe di Mera, with its gentle
ridges, provides skiers with over 35 km
of pistes, of various difficulty levels,
serviced with 6 lift facilities. There are
wide panoramic tracks, with a difference in altitude ranging from 1,700 m

offers picturesque and romantic views,
including the charming Castello peak
(1996 m) towering in the west over a
wide and thick fir tree forest. An artificial lake built for use by a hydroelectric
power station lies near the village, which
is a favourite resort among skiers.
A two-seater chair lift brings visitors to
Alpe Campo, starting point of 2 skilift
facilities. The slopes of Alpe Campo

In Carcoforo cross-country skiing professionals find a track complying with
FISI (Italian Federation of Winter
Sports) standards for competitions at a
national level. The track, groomed
mechanically, is rather challenging and
it is made up of 3 rings unwinding along
the banks of a stream through the
charming landscapes of the Egua Valley.
The first ring, 5 Km in length, has
mixed features, the second one, 2 Km in
length, is the easiest, while the third
ring, 3 Km in length has a medium-high
difficulty level and allows for both classic style and free technique. Thanks to
the features of the tracks even absolute
beginners will soon take to cross-country skiing, while baby slopes and the
local skiing school are especially convenient to those who wish to learn the
art of downhill skiing easily and safely.

Macugnaga is a typical alpine village that
stands at the foot of Monte Rosa in the centre
of a valley rich in conifer tree forests. Besides
the fascinating landscapes and the highly
organised tourist sector, Macugnaga also
boasts top-level infrastructures and services.
The high altitude of the area guarantees constant snowfall also in the village, which is
therefore the perfect setting for a holiday on
the slopes or for a relaxing and invigorating
break. 40 km of downhill pistes, partially covered in artificial snow to ensure their availability throughout the whole season offer various levels of difficulty, thus satisfying the
needs of each and every skier. 20 km of crosscountry skiing tracks divided into two sections
with different degrees of difficulty bring sports
lovers in close contact with nature. A snow
tubing park allowing visitors to experience the
excitement of sliding down slopes on inflated
rubber tyres, a mountain refuge with a stunning panoramic view on Monte Moro (3,000
m) that can be reached by cable car, a hockey
ground and a skating rink that are both
equipped with lighting installations are among
the numerous winter sports facilities available
in Macugnaga. Alpine Guides organize excursions to ice waterfalls and ski mountaineering

outings with the highest safety standards. The
well-established local mountaineering tradition encourages many professionals to live and
train here, such as Claudio Schranz, wellknown all around the world and originally
from Macugnaga. The Mountain Museum and
the Guia Goldmine (Borca di Macugnaga), the
only European mine open to visitors, food and
wines typical of the Waldensian tradition, a
fitness centre, cafes, restaurants, nightclubs
and a congress centre enhance the selection of
facilities and attractions in the area.

It is extremely easy to reach the skiing
resort of Domobianca. It is one and a
half hours away from Milan and even
closer to Como, Varese and Novara, thus
ideal for a trip to the slopes even during
the week. Furthermore, in Domobianca
everybody has the chance to experience
the joys of skiing because there are
slopes of all levels interconnected with
each other and perfectly covered in
snow thanks to a state-of-the-art artificial snow-making system. There are
green pistes for absolute beginners,
while the blue “Foppiano” slope is
slightly more exciting but still suitable
for the rather inexperienced. At higher
altitudes, several black pistes are surrounded by wonderful alpine landscapes
and offer breathtaking views. There are
also runs reserved for training pro80
grammes and pistes that comply with
FISI (Italian Federation of Winter
Sports) standards for regional and
national competitions. The total difference in altitude is over 1000 m. Among
the available recreational services: several cafés and self-service restaurants,
which can be easily reached on skis,
sunbathing terraces and a number of
first aid stations to safeguard the health
and safety of visitors. A shuttle bus service to and from the railway station in
Domodossola, free parking areas only
50-100 m from the start of the skiing
facilities, debit and credit card payment
services and a paragliding take-off site
make Domobianca an outstanding and
highly efficient resort. All the necessary
services and recreational facilities are
only 15 minutes away from the slopes.

How to get there
The small and graceful village of San
Domenico, at the foot of the Sempione
peak, is one of the most recent resorts in
the Ossola area but it is undergoing continuous expansion and transformations.
The lift facilities transport visitors from
San Domenico to the vast basin of Alpe
Ciamporino (2000 m), one of the locations with the best snowfall in the whole
Ossola district. From here other lift
facilities lead to the highest tip of Dosso
(2500 m), an area provided with downhill pistes and snowboarding tracks.
The resort is well-known not only for its
skiing slopes but also for wide and
completely safe off-piste skiing tracks.
San Domenico does not cater solely for
experienced skiers; a learning ground
and the help of highly professional
instructors from the local Skiing School

well-established tradition. The local Ski
Club was set up at the beginning of the
1900s and is among the oldest in Italy.
Valdo offers a wide selection of lifts –
the Valdo 1, Valdo 2 and small
Gadostaadt ski lifts and the Sagesboden
chair lift – while San Michele and Riale
are the locations of two Cross-country
Skiing Centres of the same names with

Formazza Valley are descendants of
ancient Waldensian populations, whose
customs and traditions are still kept
alive today. In fact, most of the population speaks the local dialect and there
are several typical houses built with

The Vigezzo Valley is one of the main
tourist locations in the Ossola area.
Santa Maria Maggiore is home to a
Cross-country skiing Centre, with over
20 Km of tracks of various difficulty
levels stretching from Santa Maria
Maggiore to Druogno and Malesco.
These tracks cater for beginners who
enjoy relaxing excursions through pineforests as well as for the numerous
young talents in this sport who live in
the valley and want to train hard at a
professional level. The nearby Loana
Valley, at an altitude of 1300 m, boasts
a track that is operational also when the
snowfall is scarce and until late spring.
The La Piana skiing resort, in the
Borough of Craveggia, can be reached
by means of a cableway departing from
the Prestinone area. In La Piana, at an
altitude of 1725 m, skiers and snowboarders can access three chair lifts and
a skilift and experience exciting descents
along wonderful slopes. The skilift in
Cui Dariolo, in the Borough of Malesco,
allows beginners to learn the art of skiing in an unspoilt natural environment.

The Alpe Devero basin, part of the
Veglia-Devero Natural Park, is a
small skiing resort that presents skiers
with many recreational activities in a
totally unspoilt environment. Three ski
lifts and a chair lift bring visitors to the
peak of Monte Cazzola where they can
start their descent along downhill pistes
of medium difficulty or explore a wide
area dedicated to thoroughly safe offpiste excursions. There are three crosscountry skiing rings of various lengths –
2, 3, or 5 km – suited also to beginners
because the most challenging uphill
slopes of the medium piste can easily be
bypassed and the panoramic run leading to Crampiolo can be completed
without skis. Moreover, ski mountaineering excursions of the highest
quality are available for enthusiasts of
this sport.

The Biella region
The territory of Bielmonte is located
only a few kilometres away from Biella,
the town of textile industries and of outlets of the big names in fashion.
Bielmonte is well renowned for “kilometro lanciato”, a speed ski slope.
The skiing facilities of Oropa Mucrone
are located close to one of the most
famous Marian sanctuaries of the Alpine

Oropa, home to the famous Marian
Sanctuary, is located at 1180 meters
above sea level. The large open area
behind the New Basilica is where the
cableway and ski lifts depart, allowing
tourists to reach the slopes quickly and
comfortably. For those who do not ski,
Oropa offers cafés and patios where you
can sunbathe, visits to the Sanctuary, its
shops and the Sacro Monte (Holy
Mount). The skiing facility is located in
the basin of the Oropa stream, at the
foot of Monte Mucrone and the presence
of snow is certain between December
and April. The tracks and slopes for
cross-country and downhill skiing, with
different levels of difficulty, begin at the
cableway and on two mountains, Monte
Mucrone and Monte Camino. In the
vicinity of the numerous available parking areas tourists will find several
restaurants where they can sample the
typical specialities of the valley, as well
as cafés, snack bars, shops and the
rooms of the Sanctuary. Oropa also

offers visitors walks, trekking, mountaineering, alpine skiing and much more
in the peaceful surroundings of the
“Sanctuary under the sky”. Moreover,
due to its proximity to Biella, which is
only 10 minutes away by car, Oropa is
able to offer all the services and amusements of a city, including a wide choice
of hotel accommodation.

Bielmonte is part of the territory of the
“Zegna Oasis”, which stretches for 26
km along the Panoramic Road between
Trivero and Rosazza, in the Cervo
Valley. Skiing in Bielmonte means having access to easy and relaxing pistes,
ideal for children, as well as black
pistes, like that of Scheggiola and of
Dosso Grande on the northern side.

Val Grande is the home to several natural attractions, wonderful mountains,
charming alpine lakes and magnificent
glaciers. Winter sports enthusiasts will
enjoy its peaceful and relaxing environment. Sports activities take place mainly
in Groscavallo and Chialamberto,
where the pistes unwind on tracks of 8
and 17 km in length, connected to each
other for about 30 km of skiing facilities
in total. The Forno Alpi Graie area
offers a few free cross-country ring

Ala di Stura and Balme make up a
modern and well-equipped skiing district. The cross-country track in the
Borough of Balme leads from the village
to the Pian della Mussa plain, at 1,850
m, encircled by high rocky pinnacles. The
track stretches for 35 kilometres in a
landscape dominated by the towering Uja
di Ciamarella and the Bessanese peaks.
Ala di Stura’s cross-country skiing track
unwinds through the plain where the
small village of Villar is located; it is 7.5
km long and allows for both classic stride
and skating techniques. It is advisable
to phone the number listed under Info
because the track is not always fully
accessible. The Ala Valley has preserved
its distinctive folklore that is revived
every year during local celebrations characterized by traditional dances and,
above all, by traditional female costumes,
which have remained unchanged for centuries. Furthermore, the valley is rich in
artistic and natural wealth, besides being

famous for the numerous sundials painted on the walls of the houses. The Ala
Valley is also a perfect choice for lovers
of good food who will enjoy several
wholesome products such as “tuma”, a
cheese made using a special press,
“polenta” (cooked cornmeal), small fresh
or seasoned goat cheeses, beef, goat, mutton and game. Those with a sweet tooth
will not be able to resist the “paste di
meliga” biscuits and jams prepared with
local bilberries, while the bilberry grappa brandy and “genepy”, an infusion of
flowers of different species of Artemisia,
are not to be missed at the end of meals.

The Valley of Viù is a popular spot for
many skiers during the winter season.
Besides the lift facilities of the Col del
Lys and Pian Benot, there is also a
cross-country track located in the Plain
of Usseglio, a picturesque valley overlooked by the mountain clusters of Torre
d’Ovada, Lera and Rocciamelone. The
track unwinds for 11 km through wonderful natural scenery. I is composed of
5 rings, ideal for beginners and for
skilled skiers alike, and it is suitable
both for classic techniques and for skating. The traditional language spoken in
the area of Viù is the Franco-Provençal
Patois. Nowadays, however, the local
inhabitants also speak the Piedmontese
dialect and their patois dialect is slowly
losing its original traits. Nevertheless,
during the celebrations for the Patron
Saint, the so-called “Priore” of each
chapel still wear the traditional festive
costume, known as “Ciosina”. The local

products include cheese, “torcetti” and
“paste di meliga”, two typical kinds of
biscuits.

The Orco Valley partially comprises one
of the most important protected areas of
Italy, the “Gran Paradiso” National
Park, unique for its natural riches and
the first to be created in Italy. On the
borders of the park, in the Boroughs
of Ceresole Reale, Locana, Alpette
and Valprato Soana, snow enthusiasts
will enjoy many sports opportunities
during the winter season: cross-country
skiing, climbing and ice skating.
The Orco Valley, already well-known in
the 19th century for its natural beauty,
experienced great fame around the year
1850. The local administration of
Ceresole gave King Victor Emanuel II the
right to hunt chamois and alpine ibex in
exchange for the honorific title “Reale”
(Royal). The King himself, Queen
Margherita and the poet Giosuè Carducci
often sojourned in the valley, which
became even more famous after the construction of an artificial water basin,
opened in 1932 by the then heir to the
throne of Italy Umberto of Savoy.
How to get there
By car: freeway from Turin to Caselle airport, take
exit 2 leading to ex State Road 460 and follow signs
for Cuorgnè-Pont Canavese-Locana-Ceresole Reale.
For Alpette and Valprato Soana turn off respectively

Valchiusella is a narrow valley located
just a few kilometres from Ivrea. Nature
and mankind coexist here in perfect harmony and the environment is shaped by
the work of men but never spoilt. Several
mountain sports are available here: there
are tracks for skiing excursions and for
cross-country skiing and the facilities of
Palit, in the small village of Vaudanza di
Traversella, offer both exciting slopes
and relaxing moments in a sunny and
panoramic spot with a view over the higher lands of Canavese. Throughout the centuries, Valchiusella has been the setting of
many historical events of the Canavese
area. The Celts and the Salassi tribes were
the first to extract and process the valuable
local ores, the main economical resource of
the valley. Along the numerous and charming paths that run through fields, summer
pastures, forests and ancient villages you
will find the most important stone carvings
of the district.

Caldirola is located along the slopes of
Monte Gropà, in the high Curone
Valley, in the borough of Fabbrica
Curone. The district boasts one of the
oldest skiing tradition and histories in
Italy. The skiing facilities in Caldirola
have, in fact, been operational since
1929, when the local pistes and inns
could only be reached by donkey. The
pistes are provided with two ski lifts and
with a chair lift that starts at La Gioia
(1,110 m) and ascends to the top of
Monte Gropà (1,446 m) from where, on
clear winter days, visitors can behold
the Ligurian Sea in the south and the Po
Valley, the city of Milan and the whole
chain of the Alps in the north. There are
4 pistes for alpine skiing, of different
degrees of difficulty which all converge
into the same gully where the chair lift
starts. A cross-country skiing ring track
at the foot of Monte Gropà enhances the

local appeal to skiers. Moreover, afterskiing activities are plentiful, with many
cafés and a disco, as well as restaurants
and hotels located in the several little
villages that make up the Borough of
Fabbrica Curone.

A region of substance and not of simple appearance,
Piedmont is “geographically speaking” a pallet of different entities, united by common underlying characteristics and by a strong predisposition to experimentation.
It is undeniable that the mountains have a very special

three hundred kilometres of skiing pistes distributed all

This “treasure” led the region to being chosen as the
location for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. Piedmont
also boasts 190 hectares of natural parks and the main
city of the region, Turin, has the highest percentage of
green areas per inhabitant of all the other Italian cities.

Europe.
