achaerus is the Herodian fort in present-day Jordan, where, according to the
account of Flavius Josephus, John the Baptist
was imprisoned and killed. This book (in English) brings together – for the first time – the results of the archaeological campaigns from 1807
to the present day. French, German and American archaeologists have followed on one another over the years, but campaigns on a large scale
were carried out in particular by the Franciscan
archaeologists of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum and, at present, by a Hungarian team.

he current monograph is the direct continuation of the initial volume in the
Machaerus academic monograph-series. The intention of the author unbrokenly remained the
same: to elucidate the blurred, historical scene of
the Gospels, and present it as authentic as possible for the future generations.
The present work has five integral parts, all of
which are the artistic, scientific and field research results of the last three years: 2013, 2014
and 2015.

he Neghev, the desert that covers much of
the southern territory of the Holy Land,
is unknown for many pilgrims who visit Israel. These travellers do not know that it is rich
in history and archaeological remains from the
Christian era, from the mid 4th century to the
end of the 7th century.
The book, complete with a rich iconography, examines the main Byzantine settlements brought
to the light by excavations, offering a complete
account of the discoveries relative to Christian
archaeology with references to ancient texts and
local inscriptions.

del territorio meridionale della Terra Santa, è
terra incognita per molti pellegrini che visitano
Israele. Questi viaggiatori non sanno che esso è
ricco di storia e di reperti archeologici risalenti
all’epoca cristiana, dalla metà del IV secolo sino

Il libro, corredato da un ricco apparato iconografico, esamina i principali insediamenti bizantini
portati alla luce dagli scavi, offrendo un resoconto completo delle scoperte relative all’archeologia cristiana con riferimenti pertinenti a testi
antichi e iscrizioni locali.

from Palestine – to have received the Son of
God on the earth, gives the Valley of the Nile a
special and particular role in the divine economy

Holy Land. From the text of the Gospel according
to Matthew and the ancient accounts of the Oriental Churches, the Author reconstructs the tradition of the journey to Egypt that the Holy Family
was forced to make in order to flee the violence of

he Roman architect Antonio Barluzzi (1884-1960) designed some of the best
known Christian shrines in the Holy Land. To
date, no book had exhaustively covered his life
and his work at the service of the Holy Places, leaving this very important heritage. This
volume fills the void. After a biography and an
introduction to the historical context in which
the architect worked, each chapter presents one
of his works which pilgrims can still visit today
in the Holy Land. The book is also richly illustrated and documented.

he Casino Giustiniani Massimo al Laterano is a 17th century villa, with gardens once
stretching between the present-day Via Merulana, Via Tasso, Viale Manzoni and Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome. Built by the Marquis
Vincenzo Giustiniani between 1605 and 1618, it
passed into the hands of the Massimo family in
1803. Between 1817 and 1829 the rooms on the
ground floor were decorated throughout by artists
of the Nazarene movement and it represents one
of their most important achievements.
The volume presents these important cycles of
paintings to the general public for the first time,
through descriptions and a rich gallery of illustrations, alongside an original history of the villa over the centuries, from its origins in the 17th
century until 1948, when it was purchased by the
Custody of the Holy Land.

l Casino Giustiniani Massimo al Laterano è
una villa secentesca il cui parco si estendeva tra le attuali via Merulana, via Tasso, viale
Manzoni e piazza San Giovanni in Laterano,
a Roma. Fatta erigere dal marchese Vincenzo
Giustiniani tra il 1605 e il 1618, passò ai Massimo nel 1803. Tra il 1817 e il 1829 le sale al pianterreno furono interamente decorate dai pittori
Nazareni, dei quali costituiscono in assoluto una
delle realizzazioni più importanti.
Il volume presenta per la prima volta al grande
pubblico questi importanti cicli pittorici attraverso descrizioni e una nutrita galleria di immagini, che si affiancano a un’inedita storia della
palazzina nel corso dei secoli, dall’origine nel
‘600 fino al 1948, quando fu acquistata dalla Custodia di Terra Santa.

comfort in times of mourning, fear and
discouragement for those who preceded us on
the path of life. In our times too, these prayers,
together with the seven words of Christ on the
cross, can become a support to descend into our
heart to learn how to walk calmly on the abysses
of the soul like tightrope walkers who learn the
art of sustaining their mystery.
In these pages, the author intends to find, in these
very ancient texts but which are always new for
their capacity to interpret the yearning of the human heart, under the ashes of a language which
perhaps seems far from us, the embers we can
draw on for the spark necessary to rekindle the
flame of hope. The hope that can light up the
places and times when we have to measure up
to our shadows and declare war on the fear that
paralyses us and leaves us too vulnerable.

Judaism, Christianity and Islam have laid down,
including in the relationship of the faithful with
food, can allow us to recover the sense of sacredness and the relationship with the transcendent
in the ordinary gestures of daily life. These pages are an invitation to turn back to the
sources of a harmony which has perhaps been
neglected, but not for that reason is any less full
of awe and teaching even for those who now live
according to the frantic pace of modern life.

seeing a rabbi from Galilee who has come to
give his personal interpretation of the Torah.

understanding of such an important passage for
the Christian identity and its relationship with

A Christmas story
“M
y name is Jorge and, if you live in Rome,
it’s a strange name, a very strange one. I
am the seventh of eleven brothers and sisters, all
mice in Rome for generations.”
This is how the story of Jorge the Mouse starts:
he is a small and very inquisitive mouse who discovers with great pride that he has the same name
as Pope Francis and is lucky enough to meet him.
Jorge the Mouse and the Pope meet, now and
again, in the gardens or palaces of the Vatican and
day by day they becomes friends. Pope Francis tells
the little mouse extraordinary stories, which Jorge
repeats to this brothers and sisters and friends. He
did not know the last story he heard, a splendid
story full of hope... the story of the Christmas crib.

A new idea of consecrated life

n 1945, Magdeleine of Jesus, who a few years
earlier had founded the Congregation of the
Little Sisters of Jesus, inspired by the work and
writings of Charles de Foucauld, composed a
work for internal use to describe to the young
candidates her “new” idea of consecrated life.
The following year the “Green Booklet” (the text
was to become famous with this name due to the
colour of the cover) was published. The reactions
were immediate, from those who received it enthusiastically as a “revolutionary” text to those
who condemned it. She advocated a contemplative life but profoundly inserted into everyday
life and above all the poorest and most marginalized social contexts. As a whole, it was a call for
a choice of radical poverty. This volume presents
the unabridged text of the “Green Booklet” for
the first time and has been edited by Father Andrea Mandonico, the postulator of the Cause for
Beatification of Little Sister Magdeleine. The
preface is by Cardinal George Cottier, theologian emeritus of the Pontifical House.

has always associated historical studies with his

RICCARDO BURIGANA (Florence, 1964) is
the director of the St. Bernardino Institute of Ecumenical Studies (ISE) in Venice.
E
ra la prima volta che un concilio della
Chiesa cattolica parlava delle religioni non
cristiane, riconoscendone il cammino verso la
salvezza e i valori morali e spirituali. Come si
riuscì, durante il Concilio Vaticano II, ad arrivare all’approvazione di un documento tanto innovativo che conteneva un paragrafo sull’islam
e uno sull’ebraismo e che lasciava intravedere un
orizzonte nuovo per il dialogo, proprio a partire
da una valutazione positiva delle altre religioni?
L’autore ricostruisce nei dettagli le complesse
fasi di scrittura, modifica e approvazione della
dichiarazione Nostra aetate promulgata da Paolo VI il 28 ottobre 1965, che ha aperto una
nuova fase nella storia della Chiesa cattolica.
Uno strumento fondamentale per comprendere
meglio come la Chiesa seppe aprirsi al dialogo
senza rinunciare alla sua missione.

t was the first time that a council of the
Catholic Church spoke of non-Christian religions, recognizing their path towards salvation
and moral and spiritual values. How was the
approval of such an innovative document, that
contained one paragraph on Islam and one on
Judaism and that allowed a glimpse of a new horizon for dialogue, starting from a positive evaluation of the other religions, reached?
The author reconstructs in detail the complex phases of writing, modifying and approving the Nostra
aetate declaration promulgated by Paul VI on 28th
October 1965, which marked the opening of a new
phase in the history of the Catholic Church.
It is a fundamental instrument to better understand how the Church was able to open up to
dialogue without giving up its mission.

wo texts which are entwined, in a continuous reference to the Franciscan charisma
and the “spirit of Assisi” to reassert the commitment of the sons of St. Francis in the field of
peace and inter-religious dialogue. Fra Pierbattista Pizzaballa reveals details not
known before and behind the scenes glimpses of
the invocation for peace held in the Vatican on
8th June 2014, and insists on the value of prayer:
“Prayer does not produce; prayer generates. It does
not replace man’s work, but illuminates it. It does
not exonerate from the path, but indicates it.” Fra Michael A. Perry reflects on dialogue between faiths as a privileged path towards peace.
Starting from his own experience, he lays down
some guidelines and puts in the first place the
commitment for common and shared work, purified from the typically human desire to control
and “possess” everything.

richiamo al carisma francescano e allo “spirito di Assisi”, per riaffermare l’impegno dei figli
di san Francesco nel campo della pace e del dialogo tra le religioni. Fra Pierbattista Pizzaballa svela particolari inediti e retroscena dell’invocazione per la pace tenutasi in Vaticano l’8 giugno 2014. E insiste sul
valore della preghiera: «La preghiera non produce; la preghiera genera. Non sostituisce l’opera
dell’uomo, ma la illumina. Non esonera dal percorso, ma lo indica». Fra Michael A. Perry riflette sul dialogo tra le fedi come strada privilegiata per la pace. Partendo
dalla propria esperienza, traccia alcune linee guida
e mette al primo posto l’impegno per un lavoro

hat does it mean to live the faith in the
land where it was born? What has the Holy Land got to do with “my” personal faith?
In these brief pages, the aim is to explore the
meaning, the deep significance of living the faith
in the Holy Land. An invitation to relate personal faith with the holy places, the Word of God
with the “geography of salvation”, the religions
of the world and the risk of believing. It closes
with a glance at the first people who received the
“message of salvation”: “going up to Jerusalem” is
in fact a Jewish experience. This is why, to prepare
for a journey to the Holy Land, it can be useful to know about the pilgrimage of the ancient
Hebrews to the Temple – and retrieve from that
message of faith the richness of the Word, the
sense of prayer and the primacy of God.

osa significa vivere la fede nella terra che l’ha
vista nascere? Cosa c’entra la Terra Santa con
la “mia” fede personale? La Terra Santa è costitutivamente la terra della fede, perché la Bibbia qui
è nata e qui è cresciuta nel corso dei secoli.
In queste brevi pagine si vuole esplorare il senso,
il significato profondo del vivere la fede in Terra
Santa. Un invito a mettere in relazione la fede personale con i luoghi santi, la Parola di Dio con la
“geografia della salvezza”, le religioni del mondo e
il rischio di credere. Chiude uno sguardo sui primi
destinatari del “messaggio di salvezza”: la “salita a
Gerusalemme”, infatti, è anzitutto un’esperienza
giudaica. Ecco perché, per prepararsi a un viaggio
in Terra Santa, può essere utile conoscere il pellegrinaggio degli antichi ebrei al Tempio. E recuperare da quel messaggio di fede la ricchezza della
Parola, il senso della preghiera e il primato di Dio.

religious life in the Church, a concrete proposal for many women who want to follow Christ.
This charisma has remained alive through the
centuries and even today, at the start of the third
millennium, it answers the provocation of becoming embodied in contemporary culture, remaining open to dialogue with it.

where he “recreated” the Bethlehem scene with
a vivaciousness that delighted the world. From
Greccio, the Author investigates the meaning of

this way that the mystery of the incarnation truly
represents an important element in the Christian
experience of the Poverello. The episode in Greccio is nothing but an “external” demonstration of
a much deeper dimension which lived in the soul
of Francis and illuminated his experience.

ccording to the stories about St. Francis of
Assisi, he does not appear to have had anything to do with the prime need of being nourished. Yet food also plays a part in his human
story: bread, focaccias and cereals, wild herbs and
vegetables, mostaccioli cakes made from almonds,
honey and grape must, but also eggs, cheese, pork
and its by-products, chicken, white and oily fish
and shrimp pie, his favourite.
These are only some of the foods that Francis
used to sustain his body and which are told in
the episodes of this book, taken from Franciscan
sources. Beyond an austere and mystical hagiography, Francis appears to us as a “healthy lover
of good food”, holding good food in moderate
esteem and appreciating it as a gift and sign of
joy and humble thanks to God.

azareth is an Arab city in the heart of the
multifaceted Israeli society. It is a city
which lives huddled around its shrines, the destination of thousands of pilgrims: the Basilica
of the Annunciation, the Church of St. Joseph
and the Franciscan complex (with the museum
and archaeological area), the Orthodox Church
of St. Gabriel, the ancient synagogue, the Mount
Precipice, the Mensa Christi.
What was only a tiny village in the times of Jesus, without any mention in the Old Testament
(“Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
John 1,46), is for the believer today a “school on
the imitation of Jesus” (Paul VI). Thanks to this
guide we can discover it through history, visits to
its sites and the sources.

times in the Old Testament, guards some
of the memories dearest to Christian tradition.
Going up Kidron Valley, the places of the agony and arrest of Jesus can be visited, as well as
the places where he taught the apostles, where
he wept for Jerusalem and his ascent to heaven.
There are also others, such as the ancient Tomb
of Mary. Two thousand years of history and archaeology but above all of faith and devotion:
generation after generation, the Christian community has guarded these places even in times of
difficulty and persecution.
The book is divided into three sections, dedicated respectively to the historical development
of the most significant sites, their visit and the
evangelical texts to which they refer.

l Monte degli Ulivi, già ampiamente menzionato nell’Antico Testamento, custodisce
alcune tra le memorie più care alla tradizione
cristiana. Risalendo la valle del Cedron, si possono visitare le testimonianze dell’agonia e dell’arresto di Gesù, ma anche il suo insegnamento agli
apostoli, il pianto su Gerusalemme e l’ascensione
al cielo. E altre ancora, come nel caso dell’antica
Tomba di Maria. Due millenni di storia e di archeologia, ma soprattutto di fede e di devozione:
generazione dopo generazione, la comunità cristiana ha custodito questi luoghi anche in tempi
di difficoltà e persecuzione.
Il volume è diviso in tre sezioni, dedicate rispettivamente allo sviluppo storico dei siti più significativi, alla loro visita, ai testi evangelici che vi si

PIETRO A. KASWALDER (1952-2014) He
was a professor (Old Testament Exegesis and Biblical
Geography) at the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum
and guided its Biblical excursions. He published studies on exegesis, history, geography and archaeology.

l volume raccoglie 17 itinerari che l’Autore
(scomparso prematuramente nel 2014) ha
elaborato e guidato mentre era docente presso
lo Studio Biblico Francescano di Gerusalemme.
Ogni itinerario è accompagnato da un ricco corredo fotografico. I siti visitati vanno da quelli più
famosi di Betlemme, Gerico, Masada e Giaffa,
a quelli meno noti ma di straordinario fascino
come le città bizantine nel deserto del Negev e
la Samaria.
Il testo ripercorre brevemente la storia di ciascun
sito e ne presenta le principali ricchezze archeologiche.
