Media Release Manpower Employment Outlook Survey Embargo till 00:01 GMT, 9 September 2014 Manpower Employment Outlook Survey Italian hiring prospects improves 11% year-over-year Net Employment Outlook stands at -3% The fourth-quarter survey reveals: - The October-December forecast remains negative but improves both quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year, and is the strongest Outlook reported since the second quarter of 2012 -Fourth-quarter hiring plans are 5 percentage points stronger quarter over quarter and improve by 11 percentage points year-over-year. - Employers in all four regions forecast a decline in staffing levels during 4Q 2014 but compared with the previous quarter, hiring prospects improved in three of the four regions, most notably by 6 percentage points stronger in the North West and 4 percentage points reported in Middle Italy. - Hiring intentions improve in eight of the 10 industry sectors compared with 4Q 2013. However, considerable declines are reported by employers in the Electricity, Gas & Water sector and the Construction sector. - For the first time the MEOS report includes comparisons among organization sizes in industry. Employers in the Large (with 250 or more employees) and Medium (50-249 employees) organization categories, with +10% and +3%, respectively, are more optimistic than Employers in Small and Micro categories. Milan, September 9th, 2014 - ManpowerGroup Italy released today its quarterly Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, showing a moderate increase in hiring prospects for the OctoberDecember time frame, even though the forecast remains weak. With more than 1,001 employers responding, 4% of employers are expecting to increase staffing levels, 10% forecast a decrease and 78% anticipate no change. Once the data is adjusted to allow for seasonal variation, the Outlook stands at -3%. The Outlook shows hiring plans are 5 percentage points stronger quarter-over-quarter and improve by 11 percentage points year-over-year. Media Release Outlooks also improve in eight of 10 industry sectors compared to last year and in three of four regions compared with the previous quarter. “Despite all the recent negative business indicators for Italy,” Stefano Scabbio, President and CEO of ManpowerGroup Italy and Iberia says, “we are more optimistic than we were earlier. The most notable increases of 18 and 15 percentage points are reported in the Public & Social sector and the Transport, Storage & Communication sector, respectively. Manufacturing sector employers report an improvement of 12 percentage points and the Outlook for the Restaurants & Hotels sector is 11 percentage points stronger. Meanwhile, considerable Outlook declines of 19 and 10 percentage points are reported by employers in the Electricity, Gas & Water sector and the Construction sector, respectively. Regional comparisons Employers in all four regions expect to reduce staffing levels during 4Q 2014. South/Islands employers report the weakest hiring prospects with a Net Employment Outlook of -10%. Elsewhere, muted hiring plans are evident in Middle Italy where the Outlook stands at -3% while employers report Outlooks of -2% and -1% in the North East and the North West, respectively. When compared with the previous quarter, employers report improved hiring plans in three of the four regions. The Outlook for the North West is 6 percentage points stronger, while increases of 4 and 3 percentage points are reported in Middle Italy and the North East, respectively. The South/Islands Outlook is unchanged. Organization-Size comparisons Employers in the Large (with 250 or more employees) and Medium (50-249 employees) organization categories expect to grow staffing levels during the 4Q 2014, reporting Net Employment Outlooks of +10% and +3%, respectively. However, payrolls are forecast to decline in Small-size businesses (10-49 employees) where employers report an Outlook of -6%, as well as in Micro firms with an Outlook of -4%. Quarter-over-quarter, hiring intentions strengthen in two of the organization-size categories.
