Tourism Excellence:
improving the city through the enhancement of
its military architecture
Verona is an important example of a fortified city:
 the remains of the walled Roman city
 the Della Scala perimeter walls with their urban
castle called Castelvecchio
 the structure of the Venetian fortress Castel
San Pietro, built up on the old Visconti family
castle
 the grandiose layout of the Hapsbourg
stronghold, cornerstone of the Austrian
“Quadrilateral”, including the Arsenal.

The definitive layout of the city wall is more than
9 kilometres in lenght
It covers almost 100 hectares with its various
works (towers, curtain walls, round towers,
bastions, moats, ramparts and terraces)
Outside the walls, in the flatter countryside or on
the hills, 31 forts (19 of which still existing) once
formed the ultimate and most modern ssystem,
the imposing advance defence of the Hapsbourg
stronghold.
From the awareness of this important heritage to
the identification of a new specific purpose:
rediscovering urban functions of this system.
In 2000
Verona’s Municipal Council established
a Department for the Enhancement of Military
Architecture (U.V.A.M.)
with the aims of
 providing a collection of all documents and
geographical maps relative to the military
architecture patrimony in Verona
 cataloguing and creating an archive of specific
paperwork and data on the web for multimedia
access
 exploring this field with virtual reconstructions
and computer simulations of the original layout
of the fortified city and its historical evolution;
 developing didactics
 organizing guided visits and permanent
exhibitions
 creating a network among local, national and
international experts, in order to achieve
studies and research on the theme as well as to
elaborate projects on an European level.
