Hydroacoustics
(Researchers involved: 9)
Maritime transport is fundamental to sustain world trade and economic growth, thereby fulfilling a critical social as well
as economic function. In this context, the study of the underwater noise and its abatement represents a fundamental
research theme. It concerns:
 the sea acoustic pollution and the strict certification rules imposed by international organizations on noise emission;
 the negative effects on marine wildlife;
 the safety of crews, the comfort of passengers on board, the disturbances in harbour areas, ship detectability, etc.
At CNR-INSEAN the expertise on hydroacoustics is demonstrated by the participation to the most important European
research projects (FP7: SILENV, SONIC, STREAMLINE – EDA (European Defence Agency): DALIDA, MAPNOP proposal) and is twofold:
1.
2.
Experimental techniques aimed at characterizing the hydrodynamic and acoustic fields underwater (LDV, PIV,
stereo-PIV, tomography);
Computational models - based on the Acoustic Analogy - to evaluate the main generating and propagating noise
mechanisms taking place in the flow and the many complex problems related to it (identification of the main
sources, fluid-structure interactions, scattering phenomena, cavitation noise, etc.).

CONCLUSIONI
