The twelve months of the year
L’antico calendario era formato da 10 mesi, e cominciava dal 1° marzo. Il
re Numa Pompilio, nel VII secolo a.C., completò il vecchio calendario
aggiungendo i due mesi mancanti cui dette i nomi rispettivamente
di ”januarius” , che divenne l'undicesimo mese, e ”februarius” che
divenne il dodicesimo mese. Successivamente verso la metà del II
secolo a.C. l'inizio dell'anno civile venne spostato al 1° gennaio. Così
l'undicesimo e il dodicesimo mese divennero rispettivamente il primo e
il secondo mese dell'anno.
The old calendar was formed by ten months and started on 1° March.
The king Numa Pompilio, in the VII century B. C., completed the old
calendar adding two months which were named “januarius”, which
became the 11° month and “februarius” which became the 12° month.
After , about the middle of II century B.C. the beginning of the civil
year was moved to the first of January. So the eleventh and the
twelfth month became respectively the first and second month of the
year.

dio romano Giano (Ianuarius),
divinità preposta alle porte e
ai ponti, ma più in generale
rappresentava ogni forma di
passaggio e mutamento.
The name January derives
from the Roman God Jianus,
the God appointed at the
doors and bridges but more
generally representing every
forms of trasformation.
Febbraio
February
Il nome del mese deriva dal latino
”februare”, che significa "purificare“
o "un rimedio agli errori" dato che
nel calendario romano febbraio era il
periodo dei rituali di purificazione,
tenuti in onore del dio etrusco
”Februus” e della Dea romana “Febris”.
The name February derives from the
Latin verb “Februare” that means “To
purify” or it also means “a remedy to
mistakes” because in the Roman
calendar February was the period of
the purification rituals in honour of
the Etruscan God “Febreus” and of
Roman Goddess “Febris”.
Marzo
March
Marzo deriva da Marte, Dio della
guerra e della forza virile.
Anticamente era anche protettore
della natura e del suo risorgere
primaverile.
March derives from Mars the God
of war and of virile strength. In
ancient times this God was also the
protector of nature and of its
spring rebirth.
Aprile
April
Secondo alcune interpretazioni, il
nome deriva dall'etrusco Apro, a
sua volta dal greco Afrodite, dea
dell'amore, a cui era dedicato il
mese di aprile. Secondo altre
teorie, il nome deriva invece
dal latino aperire (aprire) per
indicare il mese in cui si
"schiudono" piante e fiori.

name derives from the Etruscan
Apro,that derives from the
Greek Aphrodite,the Godnes of
love to whom the month of April
was dedicated. According to
other suppositions this name
derives from the Latin “aperire”
(to open) to mean the month in
which plants and flowers open

May
•Maggio (Maius), è dedicato a Maia,
dea della terra. Nella cultura
cristiana maggio è il mese dedicato
alla Madonna e dell'abbondanza.
•May, is dedicated to Maia, the
Godness of the earth. In the
Christian tradition May is the
month dedicated to the Virgin Mary
and to abundance.
Giugno
June
Giugno "Junius" è dedicato a
Giunone, dea della maternità,ed è
il mese in cui la terra è più
feconda che mai. Giugno è
denominato anche Mese del Sole
June “Junius” is dedicated to
Juno, the Godness of maternity
as it is the month when the earth
is more fertile than ever. June is
also named the month of the Sun.
Luglio
July
Quintilis (il quinto mese del
calendario originale) fu
chiamato poi Luglio da
“Julius” in onore di Giulio
Cesare che nacque in questo
mese.
Quintilis (the 5th month in
the original calendar ) was
then named July from
“Julius” in honour of Julius
Caesar who was born in this
month.
Agosto
August
Sextilis fu chiamato poi
“Augustus” in onore di Ottaviano
Augusto.
Sextilis was then named
“Augustus” in honour of
Octavian Augustus.
Settembre
September
Settembre deriva dal
latino september, a sua volta
da septem, "sette", perché
era il settimo mese
del calendario romano, che
iniziava con il mese di marzo.
September derives from the
Latin “september” which is
linked to the word septem,
“seven”, because it was the
seventh month of the Roman
calendar that began with the
month of March
Ottobre
October
Ottobre deriva da “october”
perché era l’ottavo mese del
calendario romano.
October derives from “octo”
because it was the eighth month
of the Roman calendar.
Novembre
November
Novembre trae origine da
”november” perché era il
nono mese del più antico
calendario romano.
November derives from Latin
“Novem” because it was the
ninth month of the most
ancient Roman calendar.
Dicembre
December
Dicembre trae il nome da
“december” per indicare il
decimo mese dell’ antico
calendario romano.
December derives from
