Stille Nacht fu eseguita per la prima volta la vigilia di Natale del
1818 a Obendorf, un piccolo villaggio sulle montagne
austriache. Questa è la sua storia.
Silent Night was sung for the first time on Christmas Eve of 1818 in
Obendorf, a small village in the Austrian mountains. This is his
story.
L’abate Josef Mohr, curato della
parrocchia Saint Nicholas, aveva scritto
un poemetto intitolato Stille Nacht, e
desiderava metterlo in musica per la
messa di mezzanotte. Poichè l’abate non
era musicista, chiese al suo amico Franz
Grüber, di mettere in musica il suo
poemetto.
Abbot Josef Mohr, the parish curate of
St. Nicholas, wrote a poem titled a Stille
Nacht, and wanted it to music for the
midnight mass. The abbot was not a
musician and Mohr asked his friend Franz
Gruber, to set to music his poem.
Franz Grüber era l’organista della parrocchia, scrisse un
arrangiamento per chitarra e Stille Nacht fu eseguita la notte di
Natale del 1818. Da allora Stille Nacht si è imposto in tutto il
mondo come il canto più significativo della notte di Natale.
Franz Gruber was organist of the parish. He wrote an arrangement for
guitar and Silent Night was performed on Christmas Eve of 1818. Since
then, Silent Night has established itself worldwide as the most
important part of Christmas Eve.

esquimese ma anche in lingua bantou africana. Nessun’altra musica,
profana o religiosa, ha raggiunto una fama internazionale come questo
modesto canto austriaco di Natale.
Silent Night has been translated into all languages of the world. It is
sung in the Eskimo language but also bantou Africa. No music, secular
or religious, has achieved international fame as this modest Austrian
Christmas song.
