INTRODUZIONE
Da tempi remoti, le tradizioni calabresi indicano la Vergine Maria SS. di Portosalvo
come la Madonna protettrice dei pescatori e dei marinai in genere. Nella Calabria le
sono state dedicate tantissime chiese, molte nella provincia di Reggio Calabria.
Nella nostra cittadina (Bagnara Calabra) la chiesa in cui si venera la Statua della
madonna si trova proprio nel rione dei pescatori, che ogni anno sono artefici e maestri
nell’ organizzare la festa in suo onore che si svolge l’ultima domenica di settembre.
Si narra che la devozione alla madonna, nasce, si sviluppa e si rinnova ogni anno, in
memoria di un miracoloso salvataggio di una nave durante una tempesta in prossimità
della costa di Marinella di Bagnara.
Un quadro, che si trovava sulla nave, salvatosi dalla tempesta esposto in chiesa,
rappresenta il dramma che ancor oggi i pescatori inormi vivono quando subiscono la
violenza delle onde in mare aperto.

Questo dipinto è la testimonianza di un evento funesto, temuto dai marinai e dai
pescatori di ogni tempo e luogo, perché l’uomo può assai poco contro la potenza
degli elementi che si scatenano in un mare in tempesta, e dunque rende gloria alla
Beata Vergine di Portosalvo, da lei sola infatti ci sovviene la salvezza dell’anima e del
corpo.
Oggi, giorno di orgoglio e di vanto per tutti i pescatori, tutti gli emigrati, con questa
nostra nuova statua dedicata alla Madonna che porta in salvo i pescatori dalle insidie
del mare in burrasca, vogliamo rinnovare qui in terra australiana, la nostra terra, la
nostra seconda patria, l’omaggio a questa madonna, nel nome della tradizione, dello
spirito del culto e della fede che tutti noi le portiamo.
Il mestiere del pescatore a Bagnara come a Sydney è fatto di sacrifici e fatica, pericolo
e rischio contro cui l’uomo nulla può fare. Una grande fede quindi accompagna i
pescatori e i marinai tutti nel loro cammino.
La fede e la devozione che i pescatori ed i marinai dello stato del NSW hanno in questa
madonna, finalmente ha un punto di riferimento nella nuova statua della Madonna di
Portosalvo ed un luogo dove pregarla e venerarla, perché spesso, quando la violenza
delle onde del mare, i pericoli del mare aperto e le intemperie creano sgomento e
sconforto, solo con la fede e la devozione verso la nostra Madonna si riescono a
superare.
Lungo il corso dei secoli, spesso le tradizioni popolari si sono incrociati con la
religione, ed è grazie a questa fusione tra culture che il popolo ha sempre trovato
forza per andare avanti nonostante le mille insidie e pericoli che durante il cammino
è costretto ad affrontare. Tra le tante tradizioni popolari che si incrociano con la fede, nasce la devozione
verso la madonna di Portosalvo, che i nostri padri ci hanno tramandato e che noi
cercheremo di tramandare ai nostri figli e nipoti con le modalità certamente diverse
usate in Calabria ed in connubio con la società moderna di questa terra, quella
australiana, non più straniera ma oramai amica, che sarà patria dei nostri figli e delle
future generazioni delle nostre famiglie.
Qui molto lontani dalla nostra terra, ma vicinissimi alle nostre radici, dove abbiamo
fondato le nostre case e dato un futuro alla nostra vita, in questa terra ricca di
speranze per noi ed il nostro futuro, le nostre tradizioni e la nostra storia, che sono la
nostra cultura ed il nostro passato, continueranno a vivere ed essere protagonisti, di
tutto questo regina dei cieli e dei mari, madre di tutti noi, la madonna di Portosalvo.

INTRODUCTION
Calabrian traditions and history indicate very clearly that the veneration of
Maria our Most Sainted Madonna of Porto Salvo as well as Her Elevation to
Protector of all seafarers and specifically of all Fishermen, goes back to ancient
times.
In the Italian region of Calabria and in particular in the Reggio Province, during
past decades, many churches have been built in her name.
In our lovely Town, Bagnara Calabra, the Church dedicated to our Madonna
was built in the suburb most populated by Fishermen and their families. They
are most proud and able to organize the Renewal of Her Blessings and the
traditional Town Festa, every year on the last Sunday of September.
History tells us that a painting representing our Madonna was being transported
on a ship to its final destination when , near the coast close to Marinella of
Bagnara , a massive storm hit the helpless seafarers.
The Priest escorting the painting asked all on board to join him in prayers to
the Madonna to ask Her help in saving the ship and their lives.
The miracle happened : the terribly destructive storm abated and all their lives
were saved as well as the integrity of the ship. The painting was made The
Icon of the Madonna and the representation of that miracle, and proudly on
show in church.
The Devotion of Maria Our Lady of Porto Salvo, started back then. Fishermen
and Seafarers elected and adopted her as their Protector and Patron Saint,
to renew prayers when terrible and unforgiving storms hit and their lives are
at risk.
Today we, on behalf of all Calabrians , Italians and Migrants to the beautiful
new land we call home are proud and happy to dedicate the Statue and its
consecration to our Madonna , to Her goes our Devotion , our renewed prayers
and our spiritual homage.
We , on this day rejoice in the fact that our Saint Protector has a home
where we can all go and venerate Her, pray to Her and renew our faith in
Her help and protection for all who work or live by the seas.
We are very grateful to our forefathers for having passed on us all the
most important life teachings and those beautiful tradition of Devotion and
Spirituality that a day like today bears witness to .

We pledge before our Madonna and you all, that this incredibly important
inheritance, together with the reality of life changes through the years and
their application to our modern society , will be passed on to our children and
grandchildren.
Most of us born in another land are proud of our cultural heritage and equally
proud to share it with our new neighbors, our new mates , the people whom
we know , and enrich our New Land with it.
We do this from our hearts and we ask that our Madonna, the Most Sainted
Maria of Porto Salvo, protect us and our families and prays for all of us.

I genitori di Gesù si recavano ogni anno a Gerusalemme per la festa di
Pasqua. Quando egli ebbe dodici anni, vi salirono secondo la consuetudine
della festa. Ma, trascorsi i giorni, mentre riprendevano la via del ritorno,
il fanciullo Gesù rimase a Gerusalemme, senza che i genitori se ne
accorgessero. Credendo che egli fosse nella comitiva, fecero una giornata
di viaggio, e poi si misero a cercarlo tra i parenti e i conoscenti; non
avendolo trovato, tornarono in cerca di lui a Gerusalemme.
Dopo tre giorni lo trovarono nel tempio, seduto in mezzo ai maestri, mentre
li ascoltava e li interrogava. E tutti quelli che l’udivano erano pieni di stupore
per la sua intelligenza e le sue risposte.
Al vederlo restarono stupiti, e sua madre gli disse: «Figlio, perché ci hai fatto
questo? Ecco, tuo padre e io, angosciati, ti cercavamo». Ed egli rispose

le cose visibili e invisbili. Credo in un solo Signore Gesu`Cristo,
unigenito Figlio di Dio, nato dal Padre prima di tutti i secoli: Dio

da Dio, Luce da Luce, Dio vero da Dio vero; generato, non creato;
della stessa sostanza del Padre; per mezzo di lui tutte le cose sono

Vergine Maria e si e`fatto uomo. Fu crocifisso per noi sotto Ponzio

Bishop Terry Brady: You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all

Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into
his Passion, he took bread and giving thanks, broke it, and
gave it to his disciples, saying:

BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice

may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember,

teaching, we dare to say:
All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy

those who trespass against us. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil.

graciously grant peace in our days, that, by
the help of your mercy, we may be always
free from sin and safe from all distress, as we
await the blessed hope and the coming of our
Saviour, Jesus Christ.
