The number of students is limited to guarantee the quality of education offered. The academic staff includes 545 professors, 192 of which are tenured or tenure-tracked (67 full professors, 92 associate professors and 33 researchers) and 5 non-tenured extraordinary professors. Highly acclaimed professors, different kinds of expertise (professional, research), from over thirty countries of the world. What makes the Iuav special is the emphasis it places on project-based learning. It is the only university in Italy entirely devoted to teaching the planning and design of everything related to the spaces and environments in which we live: buildings, cities and landscapes; objects of daily use and graphics; cultural, theatrical and multimedia events. The Iuav has three faculties – Architecture, Regional Planning, and Arts and Design –, all of which have grown out of the original School of Architecture (founded in Venice in 1926). In recent years the Iuav has implemented an unique experiment in “project-based learning” that is the first of its kind in Italy. Theory and technique are integrated with hands-on training that spans the entire planning and design process, from the conception of an idea all the way through to its realisation. Studying at the Iuav means living in an environment that is open to what is happening throughout the world. It means coming face-to-face with authoritative voices in the fields of architecture, regional planning, arts and design. 7 Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn, Frank Lloyd Wright, Carlo Scarpa, Carlo Aymonino, Manfredo Tafuri, Vittorio Gregotti, Gino Valle, Aldo Rossi, Giovanni Astengo, Giancarlo De Carlo, Tadao Ando, and Richard Serra have all been part of our school’s history… A B R I E F H I S T O RY 1926 – Giovanni Bordiga founds the Scuola Superiore di Arti a branch of the Accademia di Belle Arti 1940 – The Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia is founded 1954–70 – Samonà administration 1952 – Frank Lloyd Wright visits the IUAV 1952 – Carlo Scarpa, professor of Decoration since 1933, is named professor of Interior Design 1963–64 – The IUAV moves to Tolentini enrolment: 1000 students 1965 – Le Corbusier visits the IUAV 1967 – Carlo Aymonino and Manfredo Tafuri teach at the IUAV 1970 – Giovanni Astengo coordinates Italy’s first degree programme in urban planning in Preganziol 1981 – University reform.
