Hogarth's painting Scene
from Shakespeare's The
Tempest,

Herbert Beerbhom-Tree
(17 December 1852 – 2 July 1917)
• Herbert Beerbohm Tree wore fur and
seaweed to pay Caliban, with waistlength hair and apelike bearing,
suggestive of a primitive part-animal
part-human stage of evolution.
• This "missing-link" portrayal of Caliban
became the norm in productions until
Roger Livesey, in 1934, was the first
actor to play the role with black
makeup.
Sir Frank Benson
(1858-1939)
1900.
F. R. Benson played Caliban
in The Tempest
from April 5 to April 28
(23 performances)
at the Lyceum Theatre
(London).
Mrs. Benson played Miranda,
Frank Rodney played
Ferdinand,
and Alfred Brydone took the
part of Prospero.
