Dear Delegates,
my name is Stephanie Ratti, I'm studying Marketing at Lumsa University in Rome and I have
the honour of being your Secretary General for IMUN Rome 2016. This year marks the 5th edition of
IMUN Rome and I am proud to be part of it, firstly as a delegate just like yourselves and then as a staff
member. In the short years that I have participated, I have had the pleasure of watching IMUN grow
from strength to strength and become an evermore important element in UN simulation.
In the first IMUN session I was part of a 400-strong delegation team with a staff of 10 whereas
today, at a distance of just 4 years, I am Secretary General, the delegates have grown to almost 3,000
and the staff number 180; all of whom are working diligently towards constant improvements that
permits IMUN to increase their outreach each year.
The truth of the matter however, is that the key players of the simulation are you. You are the
ones that will represent countries that, in many cases, you have never even heard of. You who will
bring many important issues to the table that involves us all but are often unwittingly dismissed. During
this period of time, you will find yourself entirely consumed by the issues that you will deliver. You will
create strong bonds with your fellow delegates; born from your common goals and objectives; to finally
arrive at an entirely studied resolution that you will present to the plenary session at the general
asssembly and closing ceremony. IMUN is a wonderful way of getting young students to approach
these important problems and issues but it is also a great way for you to meet your peers, make new
friends, learn many key issues that are paramount in today's world but it is above all, also a wonderful
way to have fun!
I am a fairly shy person and so the very first time that I enrolled in one of the committees I was
terrified. I was embarassed and afraid that I would not measure up to the challenge but that's just it;
this is not a challenge. I realised that we were all in the same boat and that nobody was judging anybody
else. We were all there for the same reason and that, although I did not know any of the other
delegates, I was amongst friends. In addition, this valuable excercise has given me confidence in myself
and helped me obtain a deeper empathy for my fellow peers in countries less fortunate than ours and
an understanding of different cultures and traditions.
Having said this, I would like to convey my best wishes for a rich and enjoyable experience. I
can't wait to get started and look forward to sharing this time with you.
The floor is now open for debate, have fun!
Stephanie Ratti
Secretary General - IMUN Rome 2016
Hello Delegates!
I am Michele Favaro and I am more than honored and excited to serve as a Director-General this
year at our beautiful conference, so welcome to the largest IMUN yet: welcome to IMUN 2016!
This year IMUN is so big that we had to divide it into two shifts with a massive number of 23
committees and a whopping substantive staff count of 63 people: 23 committee directors and a total of
40 Assistant Directors. They have been training essentially non-stop since the last week of October and
I know they cannot wait to welcome and lead you to productive debate and committee sessions and
take a ridiculous amount of pictures with you!
Our training program has been intense this year with endless researches on the history of the
committees and on our beautiful topics, countless hours of Fake Committee Sessions and a large
number of hours spent studying and perfecting the use of the rules of procedures: You will find a big
jump in quality at this year’s IMUN!
Honestly I do not think I could have possibly asked for a better group of talented young people
eager to know more and be 100% sure they will master their committees, so thank you staffers for
being — basically — “you”.
I would also like to thank each and every one of you, delegates — for believing in this absurd
“thing” we call IMUN: without you we will not be here and for that reason will make sure that every
second you are spending with us will be worth it.
I have been doing Model United Nations since 2011, when I took part to the very first IMUN. It
is almost impossible to think and even believe what an impact that experience has had on my life. I
quickly joined the staff the following year and that is when I realized how beautiful the conference is
not only for the delegates but also for us: the staffer. I have met a lot of people during this adventure
and a lot of them are some of my dearest friends, people I often refer to as “my second family”.
This is why IMUN is so great, because the people that are staff members enjoy each other’s
company and love spending their time together in order to make a phenomenal project, a thrilling
experience; the passion they all have makes a difference. When all of this love meets you it makes it
really easy to have our hearts warmed up by seeing you accomplish so many great things: raising your
placard every single time we call for it, debating like the real delegates at the United Nations would do,
holding perfect and passionate speeches, and ultimately care so much of so many large and harsh and
important international topics that are so relevant nowadays in a globalized society where something is
so quickly reported that a second an event happens in Hong Kong, people in New York probably
know more that the locals.
All of this is what makes IMUN special.
I will not bore you anymore with my excitement, so I will conclude being repetitive and saying a
massive thank you to all of you because we (the staffers) know we love IMUN, but what we love even
more is seeing year after year other people fall in love with it as much as we do.
Happy Debating!
Michele Favaro
