esperienza spiritualmente molto feconda.
Penola in South
Australia. È stato
il viaggio che St
Mary MacKillop
ha intrapreso
quando, nel
gennaio 1866 (150
Sempre a Penola
pellegrinaggio abbiamo camminato circa 14 chilometri,

Connell, è in vacanza.
FILM DEL LUNEDÌ IN OUR LADY’S
Un film italiano verrà proiettato
questo lunedì, 5 ottobre, alle 13:30
presso la casa parrocchiale di Our
Lady’s, al quale seguiranno tè e caffè. Tutti i
parrocchiani di lingua italiana sono benvenuti!

O blessed are those who fear the Lord
and walk in his ways!
By the labour of your hands you shall eat.
You will be happy and prosper.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
in the heart of your house;
your children like shoots of the olive,
around your table.
Indeed thus shall be blessed
the man who fears the Lord.
May the Lord bless you from Zion
in a happy Jerusalem
all the days of your life!
May you see your children’s children.
On Israel, peace!
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

make us holy in the truth.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A DISCIPLE
This section of Mark’s Gospel
explores what it means to be a
disciple. Unlike the Pharisees who
are preoccupied with the letter of
the Law, Jesus encourages his
disciples to get beyond that and
understand the spirit of the Law –
God’s dream for humankind. The
shift in the passage to the focus on
children seems a little disconnected but the whole
passage is about living in the kingdom with the
right attitude.
Most of us at some time or another have been
told to ‘grow up’; ‘stop acting like a child’; or to
‘act your age’. It implies that, as we grow older,
we have to behave in a more ‘responsible’ or
‘mature’ way than when we were children. Jesus
turns this on its head and tells us that unless we
‘welcome the kingdom like a little child’ we will
never enter it. The gospels are full of stories
about people who call on God’s mercy because
they recognise that without God they are nothing.
When they subsequently receive God’s mercy or
healing they welcome it all the more – like a little
child. Greg Sunter
AN ENRICHING EXPERIENCE
For the fifteen of us, who have just travelled the
MacKillop Parish Pilgrimage, it was indeed a
spiritually enriching experience. The first stage of
the Pilgrimage was from Portland to Hamilton in
south west Victoria. The next stage was on to
Penola in South Australia. It was the journey that
St Mary MacKillop took when, in January 1866
(150 years ago this January), she said goodbye to
her mother and travelled by Cobb and Co Coach
to Penola, to begin there her religious vocation
and to provide education for poor rural children.
It was in Penola
that the Sisters of
St Joseph were
founded by Mary
and Fr Woods.
We visited and
prayed at important
sites in the life of
Mary MacKillop and
her family. Our three special Masses during the
week focused on aspects of Mary’s spirituality –
on her care for the poor, her capacity to carry the
cross, and her faithfulness to God’s Will. Our
Pilgrimage Booklet contained much information
on the life of Mary
and her family. As
well, on four of the
days, we had a walk
of about 14
kilometres, along
country roads on
the way to Penola –
to deepen a sense of the pilgrim’s journey.
Through this Pilgrimage we have been inspired by
the life and faith of Mary, and to a deeper faith
commitment in our own lives.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS TODAY
Today, at the 10.30am Mass, we will have the
Blessing of the Animals. The 4th of October is
traditionally the Feast of St Francis of Assisi who
praised God for all of creation and is often
depicted with animals, even
preaching to the birds. This
blessing will acknowledge our
interconnectedness with all of
God’s creatures. The animals and
their owners will be invited to join
the entrance procession at the start of Mass. The
blessing will take place after the homily.
