Una parte importante di questa attività è la Lotteria. La
lotteria ci permette di tenere basso il prezzo del biglietto
di entrata mantenendo alto il netto finanziario in sostegno
della Parrocchia. I biglietti sono pronti per essere
distribuiti e venduti.

DAL VANGELO
Mt 2,1-12
Se sei un cercatore di Dio, oggi è la tua festa.
Se sei uno che non si accontenta del "sentito dire", oggi è il
tuo giorno.
Se il tuo cuore è inquieto, siediti comodo e leggi con
attenzione la meravigliosa pagina che l'evangelista Matteo ci
regala.
Giusto per ricordarlo: non erano tre e nemmeno re. Ciò che è
certo è che venivano da lontano, da Oriente, forse dall'Arabia.
L'evangelista Matteo li definisce con la parola greca "magoi",
che sta ad indicare astronomi, astrologi, studiosi del cielo.
La loro è la storia di un cammino, di una partenza lontana, di
una ricerca, di un desiderio. Si fidano di una stella, trovano la
loro strada tracciata nel cielo.
Matteo è molto abile nel descrivere il contrasto tra la
dinamicità e la ricerca dei magi, e la staticità e la chiusura di
Erode, dei sacerdoti e degli scribi.
Loro così vicini non hanno visto nulla, non hanno capito
niente. L'avevano lì, a due passi, bastava aprire gli occhi. Ma
la stella era nel cielo, e loro i potenti erano troppo preoccupati
a tenersi ben stretti ai loro scranni di potere. (Quanto ci
assomigliano!)
I magi, invece, da lontano hanno visto quella luce, senza
saperlo hanno incarnato la profezia di Isaia: "Cammineranno
le genti alla tua luce." (Is 60, 3). Hanno visto e sono partiti.
Senza sapere verso dove. Partiti e basta. Appunto come
Abramo, padre della fede.
Quella luce brilla su tutti i popoli. Il Messia nato della grotta
di Bethlemme è per tutti. (Alla faccia della vecchietta
punitrice, non ci sono cioccolatini per i bravi o carbone per i
cattivi. Il messia nasce per tutti!)
Ciò che fa la differenza non è un'appartenenza ad un popolo,
ad una etnia, ad una famiglia, ma la ricerca sincera e
coraggiosa di quella Luce, del Messia, del Cristo.
Ciò che conta è la domanda che mi porto dentro, è il desiderio
che non si lascia saziare dai surrogati, è lo sguardo che non
pretende di capire e di far combaciare tutto e subito.
Questo vale anche per noi.
Non conta se sei cattolico da generazioni e generazioni, se sei
"vicino" alla parrocchia, se non ti sei perso un incontro di
catechesi, se sei nel consiglio pastorale o se fai parte di questo
o quel movimento...
Puoi fare tutte queste cose, magari farle benissimo, con
grande devozione, ma se il tuo cuore non è sulle tracce di
quella stella, se non sei in cammino dietro a quella luce, se
non sei alla ricerca di Dio, tutto è inevitabilmente esposto alla
sterilità.
A volte ci accontentiamo di "fare" i cristiani.
La ricerca dei magi, il loro cammino, il loro sguardo, ci deve
smuovere a "essere" cristiani, fino in fondo.
L'Epifania, come le altre grandi feste, riproponendo sempre le
stesse letture, rischia di farci sentire il messaggio della Parola
come scontato, risaputo, incapace di stimolarci a conversione:
la Parola è sempre nuova, è sempre per l'oggi.
Dobbiamo riconoscerlo, anche se ci costa fatica: troppi
cristiani adulti non sono adulti nella fede, perché non
conoscono la parola di Dio se non quelle poche cose che
ricordano dal catechismo della prima comunione e dalle
prediche della domenica.
A volte sembra che i cristiani abbiano paura di proporsi con
coraggio, altre volte addirittura sembra che vogliano
nascondersi, farsi scusare di esistere. Così non
disturberebbero le altre fedi così rispettose degli altri.
Stiamo attenti a non comportarci come i capi dei sacerdoti e
gli scribi del popolo che sanno tutto, ma non ci pensano
proprio a seguire i magi per vedere la stella e provare una
grandissima gioia.

Domenica 20 Gennaio, celebrazione Ecumenica di Preghiera
per l’Unità dei Cristiani.
Si svolgerà per la 10ma volta nella chiesa S. Marc the Evangelist
alle ore 19:30. Potremo seguire e partecipare con un libretto
bilingue (inglese e italiano) preparato per l'occasione; seguirà un
momento di "fraternità" nella loro sala parrocchiale.
Si uniranno alla celebrazione oltre la Parrocchia di S. Marco
l’Evangelista (anglicana) anche St. Mesrob, Armenian Church
of Canada e Ottawa Mar Thoma Church, Diocese of North
America and Europe e St. Mark and St. Monica, coptic
Orthodox Church.

the Unity of Christians.
It will take place, for the tenth time, in their church at 19:30.
A bilingual (English & Italian) booklet prepared specifically for
this occasion will be made available for full participation.
A moment of "fraternity" will follow in their parish hall.
Along wih St. Mark the Evangelist, St. Mesrob, Armenian
Church of Canada, Ottawa Mar Thoma Church, Diocese of
North America and Europe, St Mark and St Monica, Coptic
Orthodox Church, will be joining the celebration.
FROM THE GOSPEL Mth 2,1-12
The term, Wise men, was usually reserved for men learned in
the sciences, and among the Persians these were especially
the priestly caste. They came from Mesopotamia, of which
Persia was the only country of any importance then.
Evidently God had revealed to them that a new King of the
Jews had been born, and they understood from God that he
was a special King; they did not come when Herod or Herod's
son was born.
Astrology was one of the sciences studied by Magi. There
was a firm conviction that each human being had his own star
and that his fate in life was governed by that star. This was
not and is not so, but God made use of their superstition to
teach them truth. Some unusual light in the sky aroused their
interest; God did the rest. Herod knew the Magi had not
come to honour his son, all his sons were grown up at the
time, so he immediately thought of an opponent who would
oust him from the throne.
Herod, who was a pagan, may have had some idea of the
messianic promises which were the kernel of the Old
Testament. But when the question of a special king of the
Jews arose, some of his household must have told him that
this must be the expected Messiah (a Hebrew word meaning
the Anointed, or the Christ). The priests and scribes knew
their bible, they remembered the prophecy of Micah, and so
informed Herod that Bethlehem was to be the birthplace of
the Christ.
Herod had already formed his plans, he would destroy that
infant. The Magi had probably spent months on their journey.
The star may have appeared some months before they left.
The Baby could possibly be a year old. But Herod took no
chances: when ordering the murder of all the male children of
Bethlehem (3:16), he said: "from two years and under."
The heavenly light directed them to the place (not the stable,
as it says, they "entered the house") where they found the
Child with Mary his mother: The omission of Joseph may be
due to the simple fact that he was absent because he had
found employment in Bethlehem as a carpenter. It is,
however, more likely that Matthew who has already told of
the virginal conception of Christ, is emphasizing here the fact
that Joseph was only the foster-father of Christ.
They paid him reverence by prostrating themselves before
him. It does not prove they recognized him as God but they
did recognize him as a special King. They gave him precious
gifts to show their respect and esteem.
Herod had told them to return to him but God had other plans,
the Magi were instructed to return not via Jerusalem but by
another route. This gave time to Joseph to remove the Child
before Herod could lay hands on him.
The Magi are the central personages in today's feast of
Epiphany. They were pagans who did not know the true God
of the Jews. Yet that true God revealed to them that the King
he had promised to the Jews had come. The expected Prince
was born. They came to Jerusalem, the capital of Judah,
expecting, of course, to find the city and the whole country
rejoicing. Instead they found suspicion and hatred in the
reigning king, a hatred which in a few days turned to murder.
Among the religious leaders they found knowledge of their
past history, but utter indifference as regards the present and
the future. These leaders knew the Messiah would be born in
Bethlehem; they must have realized that the Magi were very
sure of the truth revealed to them, they would not have come
such a long journey on a "fool's errand." In spite of that, the
thought of going to Bethlehem with the Magi never entered
their minds. These were the leaders who some years later
refused to listen to Christ and in spite of his miracles refused
to admit his claim that he was not only the promised Messiah,
but the true Son of God. These were the men who rejected
him because he had mercy on sinners, and spoke of a future
life. What they wanted from their Messiah was political
power and earthly freedom and prosperity. Like Herod they
ended with murder, the crucifixion of the "King of the Jews."
The pagan king was not much worse than the indifferent
leaders of God's Chosen People.
We too know the true facts concerning Christ, his mission,
and his present and future kingdom. Like the leaders of the
Jews of his day, we also could become absorbed in the affairs
of this life and the quest for wealth, pleasure and power. We
could become so totally absorbed in such things as to have
neither the interest nor the time to pay our respects to Christ
or to welcome him into our homes and our hearts, as our true
Lord. God forbid it should ever be thus with us. Rather let us
resolve this morning to make the Magi our models, to follow
them to Bethlehem and offer him all that we have and are. He
will accept our offering and we will return by another way,
wiser and better.

A cominciare dal prossimo Settembre, dal 6 al 17 stesso
mese, organizza in collaborazione con "Transwold Travel" di
Ottawa, un giro a tappe per conoscere meglio l'Italia. Partenza
da Montreal, ("Air Canada" e "Alitalia"). Visiteremo
esclusiva-mente questa regione così ricca di storia, cultura e
natura.

In collaboration with Transworld Travel of Ottawa we are
planning travel tours to see Italy beginning next September 6
to 17.
We will begin with Sicily departing from Montreal, (“Air
Canada ” &” Alitalia”). We will visit exclusively this region
which is rich in history, culture and nature.
