Una band di blues and roots che vi farà battere cuore e piede. Hanno iniziato a suonare nel 1998 e da
allora hanno pubblicato tre CD, oltre ad avere brani presenti in decine di compilation. Hanno scritto
brani per artisti della prestigiosa etichetta discografica “Crosscut records”. Hanno suonato nei più
importanti festival Blues in Italia e nel resto dell'Europa, tra questi:

Il blues è una bestia strana, un oggetto indefinibile che
vive di vita propria solo in mano a rari individui che ne
respirano l'aria per dono di nascita o scherzo di natura.
Farne cosa propria, assimilarlo fino a poterlo
comunicare con autorità è un progetto quasi
impossibile per chi proviene da tutt'altra cultura.
Grandi e celebrati musicisti hanno passato la loro vita
nella disperata ricerca di quell'attimo di autenticità, di
quel grezzo sapore che li facesse sentire veramente
vicini ai loro miti. Ora - con questi presupposti - che un
gruppo italiano di blues possa dare i brividi è una cosa
molto, ma molto rara, e quando succede è veramente
un grande piacere. La voce di Giuseppe Mascitelli
colpisce con un'intensità fuori dal comune,
raccogliendo in maniera efficacissima l'eredità di J.J.
Cale e Tom Waits, la chitarra di Nicola Palanza fraseggia
con rara eleganza, la band al completo swinga e
trascina come poche. Una scoperta vera.

Soms gebeurt het dat een goudzoeker tussen het stof iets ziet glinsteren
en al op voorhand verwachtingen koestert. Bluesfreaks kan hetzelfde
overkomen, twijfelend of het inderdaad goud is of op zijn minst een folky
kleinood. Op het in het voorjaar uitgebracht compilatie album, met daarop
geselecteerde songs van de mededingers aan het 2de European Blues
Challenge te Berlijn, viel de Italiaanse groep ‘Dago Red’ op omwille van het
vereenzaamd pareltje tussen het geheel van swing, rhythm-and-blues en
bluesrock. Dit groepje uit de heuvels van Abruzzo bestond al sinds 1998.
Pas nu ontdekte je dat hun muziek dat ondefinieerbaar kostbaars bevatte
dat alsmaar zeldzamer wordt in het overaanbod van elektrische blues.
Beïnvloed door zowel de bluespioniers als de beatpoëten begon het
zeskoppig gezelschap ‘Dago Red’ tien jaar geleden te componeren. En net
zoals John Steinbeck namen de twee zangers/gitaristen Giuseppe
Mascitelli en Marco Pellegrini de pen ter hand om randfiguren of dropouts uit de schaduw te halen.
Van hen kwamen reeds twee albums uit: ‘Folk & Blues Memories’ en ‘Feel
Like ..Going On’. Dit derde titelloze album uit 2009 bevestigt inderdaad het
eerdere vermoeden dat deze groep pareltjes wist op te delven, waaronder
‘Sorry Folks’ dat op de compilatie cd van de competitie in Berlijn terecht
kwam. Ook de twee covers op dit album, één van Little Walter en ‘Kind
Hearted Woman’ van Robert Johnson, krijgen een nieuwe glans. In de
eigen songs verenigen de muzikanten de mood van Woody Guthrie, Eric
Andersen, Leadbelly en Josh White. De hese stem van Giuseppe doet soms
aan Hans Theessink denken, dan weer aan Chris Rea of zelfs aan Tom
Waits als iemand die, van een verre pelgrimstocht teruggekeerd, amper
nog kan fluisteren. Zo schetst hij beeldrijk in ‘Half A Hobo (Half a Lord)’ de
kwetsbaarheid van de verlopen muzikant met zijn door duiven bevuilde
trompetkoffer. Meestal begeleidt Marco Pellegrini met broze
harmonicaklanken als hij tenminste niet zelf zingt.
Marco’s songs hebben iets meer jazzy zoals ‘SKOL (Short Kind Of Love)’ dat
vaagweg aan Django Reinhardt herinnert. Ook de andere bandleden
bepalen mede de sfeer zoals Fausto Troilo op cajon, Angelo Tracanna met
contrabas of Luigi Rossi met gitaren. Het instrumentale ‘Travelin’ Light’ van
gitarist Nicola Palanza droomt weg gelijkend op de wisselende lichtval in
het gebladerte bij valavond. Elke muzikant draagt bij tot dat
blueslandschap waarin wereldvreemde figuren hun eigen weg gaan of aan
de horizon verdwijnen zoals de alcoholist in ‘I’m Sober Now’ of de zwerver
in de afscheidssong ‘I’m Gone Now’. Dit fraai verzorgd album intrigeert
vooral omwille van de eenvoud en de tristesse die het uitstraalt. De
existentiële eenzaamheid in sobere zanglijnen samengebald! En de
songteksten worden zowel in het Italiaans als Engels bijgevoegd, ook al een
zeldzaamheid. Deze band trad al vaak op in Europa en vooral in Frankrijk,
maar wie hen in België boekt mag prat gaan op een primeur.

I Dago Red dall’Italia sono una certezza ed è con il loro contrabbasso ma anche con l’aggiunta di una voce
femminile che il gruppo continuerà a deliziarci, dopo un inizio in quartetto con “My Babe”. L’arrivo dell’elemento
femminile nel gruppo porterà un po’ di gradita freschezza e farà virare di tanto in tanto il repertorio verso un buon
folk blues, il tutto con un mélange di classe e di ritorno alle radici molto ben dosato.

Dago Red est une valeur sure en Italie et c’est avec sa contrebasse mais aussi avec une chanteuse additionnelle
que le groupe va continuer de nous régaler, et ce après un premier passage en quartet par « My Babe ». L’arrivée
de la gent féminine dans le combo apportera ensuite un peu de fraicheur bienvenue et fera plonger de temps à
autres le répertoire du côté d’un folk blues plutôt bien senti, le tout avec un mélange de classe et de retour aux
racines très bien dosé !

Dago Red hail from Italy and the last decade has seen and the release of several albums within Europe while their line-up
expanded to six. The latest disc, self-titled Dago Red, was issued in 2009. It’s a very mature and expressive collection of
self-penned songs, sang in English. This is an acoustic album firmly in the roots tradition, with a complete range of tempos
and diverse styles ranging from blues to country. The album is a collection of tales such as the self-awakening of the
delinquent in ‘I’m Sober Now,’ the vagabond musician in ‘Half A Hobo (Half A Lord) and themes of love and death. ‘They
Took Me’ starts with a prominent guitar line and lyrically refers to the state’s interference with one’s life journey. Indeed
journey are a key feature of the album. The song writing is primarily by lead vocalist and guitar player Giuseppe Mario
Mascitella, although harmonica player Marco Pellegrini composes two songs on the album. Rooted in pre-war blues is the
delightful ‘Short Kind of Love’, which is as much fun to listen to as it appeared to be to record, with a laidback swing, while
‘Keep On Smiling’’ has a concise harp solo and distinctive lap steel guitar riff. The closing ‘Travelling Light’ is an eerie
number which may have been played on a square neck guitar, it resonates as a moment of contemplation as the album
completes. Robert Johnson’s ‘Kind Hearted Woman’ is slowed, encouraging the listener to appreciate each word of the
ancient lyrics, while ‘My Babe’ is rebuilt over a jungle beat. An album of intrigue, it benefits from repeated listening and is
highly worth investigating. The superbly packaged CD comes with an inlay book with lyrics published both in English and
Italian.

Due to a festival cancellation, Italian blues and roots six piece Dago Red were an inspired late addition to the newly
established Stormy Sunday Blues Night. Very much an unknown quality, they engrossed an impressively populous crowd
with a range of strong originals, work songs and reworked Blues and folk standards. The band features acoustic guitarists
Giuseppe Mascitelli and Nicola Palanza, whose interplay with Domenico Grossi on harmonica is a key element in the
band’s blend country blues and folk. An early standout was ‘They Took Me,’ with its distinctive guitar chords and soft
backing vocals of Paola Ceroli. A spirited take of ‘Good Morning Blues’ grew to a wild crescendo of fast strumming, quick
drumming by Fausto Troilo on drums and wailing harp, before the reflective, laidback ‘Sorry Folks’ spelled their tale of
travelling as Mascitelli’s Chris Rea like vocals came to prominence. Angelo Tracanna’s steady bass playing led the band
into ‘I’m Sober Now’, with ear catching lyrics of the perils of alcohol and a sweet swinging vibe. Essentially a modern street
band, which touch on the sounds of their influences, like Johnson, Leadbelly and Guthrie, Dago Red have the ability to
make the familiar songs sound both fresh and dynamic, ‘My Babe’ was played in unplugged Bo Diddley style, with
flurrying runs on the harmonica by Grossi. Then Ceroli took lead vocals for an unusual version of Muddy Waters’ ‘I’m
Ready’. Sadly the band’s trip to the UK did not turn out as envisaged, yet they showed the quality in spades that would see
them welcomed to Blues and folk festivals throughout the country.
