di 1860 m. racchiudeva un’area di 190.000 mq. Le mura, con un’altezza di oltre 15 m., erano intervallate da 14 torrioni rompitratte dei quali resta una torre d’angolo, oggi abitazione (n.23).

u SANTUARIO DELLA MADONNA DI TIRANO (XVI sec.) sorge sul luogo dove nel 1504 la Vergine apparve al Beato Mario degli Homodei. Il Santuario è il migliore esempio di Rinascimento in Valtellina
e conserva stucchi, sculture e un organo preziosamente intagliato. PIAZZA BASILICA, ampio piazzale
con alcune delle antiche botteghe

a PALAZZO MARINONI Seat of the municipal government and a former Augustinian monastery (XIV cent).
b PALAZZO QUADRIO CURZIO (XVI cent). Open gallery of the eighteenth century.
c PARISH CHURCHY OF SAN MARTINO It already existed in the tenth century but is was fully restored
in the seventeenth century. The nave was enlarged for reasons of space at the beginning of the twelfth
century. The late medieval layout remained unchanged until the rebuilding of the baroque period. The
bell tower is in pure Romanesque style (by Jacopo of Valsolda) and it has eight orders of openings,
which, rising, give the empty spaces precedence over the full ones (Ad triangulum technique).
d PALAZZO MERIZZI (XVII cent). A beautiful courtyard with open galleries.
e PALAZZO VISCONTI VENOSTA (XVI cent). There is a large, elegant staircase of the XVIII century and
some rooms with frescoes ceilings inside the house.
f PALAZZO BUTTAFAVA (XVIII cent). Fully restructured, two elegant adjacent portals of the Renaissance.
g PALAZZO ANDRES (XVI cent). Ribbed vaulted portico, under which were painted the coats of arms of
the wives who entered the Family.
h PORTA BORMINA (1492/3). Almost fully reworked. On its right narrow tunnel pathway.
i PALAZZO SERTOLI SALIS It is one of the most important in the province. It was created by uniting
some buildings of the sixteenth century. The internal portico leads to an Italian garden, which is
among the most interesting in Lombardy. Today the palace houses the Conti Sertoli Salis Winemakers. Visit to the palace (reservation N° +39.340.0640653) and to the wine cellar (reservation N°
+39.0342.710404).
j PALAZZO TORELLI (XVIII cent). On the front of the building there is a fresco of the nineteenth century
by the painter A. Caimi (S. Carlo Borromeo). The statesman Luigi Torelli, who took part in the Five Days
of Milan, lived in this palace in the last century.
k TORRE TORELLI, In medieval style but created in the nineteenth century (1837).
l RUINS OF THE FORTIFIED BOUNDARY WALLS end of the gate of the CASTELLO DI SANTA MARIA
(15th cent). Built by Ludovico il Moro; a perimeter of 1860 metres enclosed an area of 190,000 square
metres. The walls were 15 metres high and alternated by 14 large towers, only a small part of one
remains, today used as residence (n. 23). On the upper part of Tirano it was built the fortress with
the Tower (XVcent).
m PORTA MILANESE AND SECTION OF THE SFORZA WALLS of the fortified boundary (1492/3). Guard
and wash-house. Restored in 2001.
n PIAZZA PARRAVICINI, a small church (1664) and a beautiful octagonal-shaped fountain with basin in
stone slabs and geometrical patterns in bas-relief. Right in front of this Palazzo Parravicini (XVI cent).
o PORTA POSCHIAVINA (XV cent). It belonged to one of the 14 towers of the fortified town walls,

commissioned by Ludovico il Moro and completed in 1499. The portrayal of Justice and the coat of Arms of Pianta (a bear leg) and Quadrio (three cubes) are still visible, but what mainly remains are the images of the “Uomo
Selvatico” (Wild Man) of Tirano (if you go through the door, in the river direction on the first wall on the right) and
the primitive Man, which fed the alpine legend of the half man/half animal creature living in the woods.
PALAZZO PIEVANI-ARCARI (XVII cent). A simple facade with a portal surmounted by a wrought iron balcony.
MONUMENTO ALL’EMIGRANTE (Emigrant Monument) (XX cent). A work of the sculptor Mario Negri.
PALAZZO FOPPOLI (mid XVI). In 1703 it became the property of the Sanctuary Goods; later on it passed to the
Foppoli family, whose last heir donated it to the Municipality.
CASA LAMBERTENGHI (XV-XVI cent). Is a typical tower-house: a main building with two side wings surround
an internal courtyard. Visit (Reservation N° +39.0342.710262) Cell. +39 388 7952575
CASA MAZZA (XVI century). Round arch with the family coat of Arms of Quadrio (three cubes).
SANCTUARY OF THE B.VERGINE. On the 29th of September 1504, towards 5 a.m. the Virgin appeared to the
citizen Mario degli Homodei, who was going to pick figs. The Bishop of Como authorized the construction of
a chapel on the place of the Apparition. The foundation stone of the church which, still today, belongs to the
people of Tirano was laid on the 25th of March 1505. It is a wonderful example of the Renaissance Baroque
style. The most outstanding work is certainly the monumental organ, which fully covers the left transept. Eight
thin columns of red marble hold up the wooden organ case, work of Giuseppe Bulgarini (1608/1618).
PALAZZO SAN MICHELE (XVI cent). Enclosed yard with portico, open gallery on two orders held up by columns.
CHURCH OF S.TA PERPETUA (closed); ancient monastery and travellers’ hotel built maybe at the end of the
tenth century. A single apse-shaped room, with some of the most ancient frescoes of the valley, portraying S.
Perpetua and the Apostles and dated around 1170. At the sides of the arch: the Announcing Angel and Virgin.
Outside, the eighteenth-century addition of the charnel house.
CASA MARINONI (XVI cent). Portal surmounted by frescoes rectangular tympanum.
CHURCH OF S. ROCCO (XVI cent). The building, strong and octagonal-based, was supposed to serve as a
support against the Grisons and for the conquest. However, after laying the foundations in 1531, the trick was
discovered, the work stopped and later the people of Tirano finished the building of the small church,

o PORTA POSCHIAVINA, das aus dem 15. Jh. besterhaltene der drei Stadttore der Befestigungsanlage aus
der Zeit der Sforza. Besonders beachtenswert das Bild der „Justitia mit der Waage in der Hand“ und die
sonderbaren Abbildung des „wilden Mannes“. Nebenan PALAZZO PRETORIO, früherer Sitz der Bündner
Herrschaften, die dort Gericht hielten.
p CASA PIEVANI – ARCARI (17. Jh.). Barocker Balkon, gewölbte Säulenhalle.
CHIESA di S. GIACOMO (14.-16.Jh.). Diese Kirche wurde restauriert und zusammen mit einer reichen
Büchersammlung von Maria Pievani Arcari der Stadt Tirano geschenkt.
q PIAZZA DELL’EMIGRANTE. Stele zu Ehren der Auswandern, Werk vom Künstler M. Negri. Beinahe der Sitz der
städtischen Bibliothek.
r PALAZZO FOPPOLI (Mitte 16. Jh.) mit spitzbogigem Portal aus grünem Stein, einem kleinen Portal aus Mitte
18. Jh., einem kleinen Innenhof und einem Lokal in dem befinden sich ein Kamin und ein kleines Fresko.

und Karyatiden.
u SANTUARIO della MADONNA di TIRANO (16. Jh.). Eines der schönsten und wichtigsten religiösen Gebäude
in der ganzen Lombardei wurde an der Stelle erbaut wo die Jungfrau Maria einem Einwohner erschien (1504).
Sehr reich an wertvollen Werken und Elementen, unter denen eine wunderbare Orgel.

Madonna di Tirano.
y CHIESA di S. ROCCO (16. Jh.). Portal aus dem 18. Jh. und Holzaltar. Der Fürst von Como wollte seinerzeit das
Veltlin besetzen; daher brauchte er einen befestigte, strategisch günstige Lage. So beschloss er einen falschen
Mönch nach Tirano zu schicken; er sollte die Einheimischen überzeugen und eine Kirche bauen (in Wirklichkeit
