Das Fotobuch ist ein Buch, das Fotografien wiedergibt. So klar und
einfach diese Definition scheint, verbergen sich hinter ihr unterschiedlichste Buchtypen. Während die Fotografie in ihren Anfängen
noch als Textillustration diente, wurde sie im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts zu einem autonomen Medium, das die Avantgardekünstler
für sich entdeckten. Aus dem «Buch mit Fotografie» entwickelte sich
das «Fotobuch», dessen Botschaft über das fotografische Bild vermittelt wird. Ab den 1960er-Jahren nutzten Künstler der Pop-, der
Concept-, der Land Art und der Performance die Fotografie als
Vehikel ihrer künstlerischen Aussagen und prägten damit die visuelle
Sprache dieser Kunstrichtungen. In Verwandtschaft zum «artist’s
book» entstand ein neuer Buchtypus – das Fotobuch.
Gezeigt werden Fotobücher von Schweizer Autoren, Fotografen oder
Verlegern ab 1990. Nach Unikat – Unicum. Künstlerbücher widmet sich
Das Fotobuch und seine Autoren einer weiteren Erscheinungsform von
Künstlerbüchern und findet wieder im Rahmen des vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds finanzierten Forschungsprojekts Die Künstler und
die Bücher (1880–2015). Die Schweiz als kulturelle Plattform statt.
Un livre de photographie, comme la formule le laisse entendre, est
un ouvrage reproduisant des photographies. Mais si cette définition
paraît claire et évidente, elle dissimule une grande variété de types
de livres. Alors qu’à ses débuts la photographie sert encore d’illustration au texte, elle sera redécouverte au XX e siècle par les avantgardes comme genre artistique propre : le « livre de photographie »
voit le jour. Dans les années 1960, les artistes du Pop Art, de l’art
conceptuel, du Land Art ou encore des performances créent des
livres dont le message premier est transmis par les images. Le livre
de photographie se rapproche ainsi de l’« artist’s book ».
L’exposition Le livre de photographie et ses auteurs présente des livres de
photographie d’auteurs, de photographes ou d’éditeurs suisses à partir
de 1990 et souhaite interroger le rapport entre ceux-ci. Elle fait suite
à Unikat–Unicum. Livres d’artiste, organisée en 2014. Ce cycle d’expositions s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet de recherche soutenu par le
Fonds national suisse pour la recherche scientifique, intitulé Les
artistes et les livres (1880–2015). La Suisse comme plateforme culturelle.
Il libro di fotografie è una pubblicazione che riproduce immagini
fotografiche. Per banale che possa sembrare, questa definizione
riassume nondimeno le tipologie più diverse di libri. Se ai suoi esordi
la fotografia si limitava a illustrare testi, nel corso del Novecento è
diventata un medium autonomo, che le avanguardie artistiche hanno
scoperto e sperimentato per le loro finalità. Il «libro con fotografie»
di un tempo è diventato il «libro di fotografie», il cui messaggio è
visualizzato attraverso le immagini fotografiche. A partire dagli anni
Sessanta, rappresentanti della pop art, dell’arte concettuale, della
land art e della performance hanno sfruttato la fotografia per veicolare i loro messaggi artistici, plasmando così il linguaggio visivo di
queste correnti. Ne è risultata una nuova tipologia di libro, il libro
d’artista, che sovente è anche un libro di fotografie.
Nella mostra sono esposti libri di fotografie di autori, fotografi ed
editori svizzeri a partire dagli anni Novanta. Dopo Unikat – Unicum.
Libri d’artista, la mostra dello scorso anno, Il libro di fotografie e i suoi
autori è dedicata a un’ulteriore forma dei libri d’artista. Anche la
mostra di quest’anno è realizzata nel quadro del progetto finanziato
dal Fondo nazionale svizzero per la ricerca scientifica Gli artisti e
i libri (1880–2015). La Svizzera come piattaforma culturale.
A photobook, as the word suggests it, is a book of photographs. But if
this definition looks simple and clear, it actually hides a great variety of
different types of photobooks. The exhibition encompasses photobooks
from the 1990s onwards, from the very rich collection of the Swiss National Library. It is a selection of books made by Swiss artists or photographers, or released by Swiss publishing houses. The exhibition wishes
to show the various relationships between book and photography and
is a reflection upon the book as a format and as a medium of creation
today, where photography reveals its multiple dimensions.
After Unikat–Unicum. Artist’s Books (2014), The Photobook and its Authors is
the second exhibition about artist’s books from the Swiss National Library and organized within the research project supported by the Swiss
National Science Foundation, entitled Artists and Books (1880–2015).
