rano decisi a reinterpretare i profili storici dei
velieri dei secoli passati, ma usando la tecnologia
dei giorni d’oggi. Così i progettisti hanno creato
un’originale combinazione di linee legate alla tradizione
strutturate su materiali leggeri tipici della vela ad alte
prestazioni. Coloro che hanno reso possibile tutto
ciò sono dei maestri nel campo: il disegno infatti è di
di Dykstra & Partners Naval Architects, gli interni sono
firmati da Rhoades Young Design e la costruzione è
Royal Huisman Shipyard. Il risultato è Kamaxitha, un
ketch “Spirit of Tradition” armato cutter lungo 47 metri (o
meglio, 53,75 metri fuori tutto, incluso il bompresso).
Con un dislocamento di 245 tonnellate, questo
megasailer sfoggia quell’eleganza al contempo
imponente e lieve tipica di uno yachting dei tempi
passati: bordi liberi non eccessivi, proporzioni allungate
orizzontalmente, slanci contenuti ma decisi, velature
grandiose North Sails confortate dal rigging hi-tech. Lo
scafo è in alluminio Alustar Temper, gli alberi in carbonio
sono prodotti dalla Rondal così come l’attrezzatura
standing, mentre il running è Gleistein Dyneema &
Vectran; sotto il galleggiamento, inoltre, la lift keel
idraulica assicura performance ottimali. Per quanto
riguarda l’impatto visivo esterno, il piano di coperta
trattiene sapientemente i verticalismi non
abbandonandosi a ingombranti casseri o deckhouse, e
proponendo, al contrario, tughe misurate e intimi
pozzetti. Tutto è ragionato sui canonici rivestimenti in
teak, grezzo e chiaro o rosso lucido, vetri bassi, e
dettagli tecnici espressi nella più pura estetica d’antan.

amaxitha’s sector-topping design and engineering team had the task
of reinterpreting the exquisite silhouettes of the great sailing yachts
of the past using leading-edge technologies to guarantee superb
performance. Those combined efforts produced an original combination
of traditional-seeming lines clothed in lightweight, high-performance sailing
materials. Dykstra & Partners Naval Architects penned the actual design,
the interiors came from the drawing board of Rhoades Young Design and
the build was taken care of by the Royal Huisman Shipyard. The result is
Kamaxitha, a 47-metre cutter-rigged Spirit of Tradition ketch whose length
over all stretches to 53.7 metres when her bowsprit is included.
With a displacement of 245 tons, this coolly beautiful megasailer exudes
the imposing, long-limbed elegance of the glorious yachts of the early 20th
century. Her moderately low freeboard, long proportions and decisive rakes
all draw the eye and hold it. That’s all without mentioning the grandiose

North Sails sail plan spread on her high-tech spars. Kamaxitha’s hull is made
from Alustar Temper aluminium. Her carbon-fibre masts and standing
rigging were made by Rondal, while her running rigging is the work of
Gleistein Dyneema & Vectran. Below her waterline, a lifting keel guarantees
optimal performance. In terms of exterior visual impact, Kamaxitha’s deck
plan includes vertical elements but never allows them to feel bulky – that
includes the measured deckhouse and intimate cockpits. Great swatches
of teak are everywhere too: bleached or red-varnished teak combined with
low windows and retro-style technical features.
The interior layout begins with lounge areas in the deckhouse including one
with a chart area and another in the main deckhouse. On a lower level, there
is also a large dining area, a saloon area and a bar. The sleeping quarters
consist of a master suite with double bed, three passenger cabins with twin
berths and a double as well as various Pullman berths and even a sofa-bed

Il layout interno si sviluppa con salottini nelle
deckhouse: un quadrato con zona carteggio e un
soggiorno nella main; nel livello inferiore la grande
dinette con sala da pranzo, salotto e bar. La zona notte,
invece, prevede la cabina armatoriale con letto
matrimoniale, tre cabine passeggeri di cui due con
cuccette doppie e una matrimoniale oltre a vari letti a
pullman, ed eventualmente un divano-letto nella
dinette inferiore; l’equipaggio gode di ulteriori quattro
cabine.Toby Collins, designer di Rhoades Young, così
descrive le scelte d’arredamento effettuate: «Durante la
creazione degli spazi interni sui nostri yacht noi siamo
sempre guidati dai consigli del cliente, cosa che sono

The deck has only moderate vertical elements with a measured deckhouse and intimate cockpits
in the lower dinette. The crew quarters add another four cabins to this total
too. Rhoades Young designer Toby Collins describes his company’s approach: “We are always led by the client when creating the internal spaces on
our yachts and, as I am sure you can appreciate, each owner has specific
ideas about what the boat will be used for. In the case of Kamaxitha, the owners wanted three specifics: firstly, to build a yacht that captured the spirit
of a bygone age – that of the Bristol Pilot Cutters and Brixham trawlers; secondly, to ensure that the modern technology available would ensure high
performance and great handling; and finally, to have an interior that recreated the spirit of the traditional, while being luxurious and free from the oftenintrusive hardware. What we wanted to create was an interior with a calm,
reassuring ambience based on traditional design and furnishing elements,
warm colours, suffused light and an understated sense of luxury, maximising
the use of the woods and pursuing a very great level of authentic detail. The

railings of hand-turned spindles and by book shelves and display alcoves
surmounted by shell design pediments, all enhanced by the glow from
period-style light fittings sourced from various different companies, such
as Cantalupi, Hector Finch and Besseling & Jones. The floors throughout are
immaculately laid in walnut. Subtle, fine joinery and architectural features
gradually reveal themselves and add to the visual interest. The yacht has a
retractable keel, which obviously has to come up through the middle of the
boat. In order to mask this feature, Rhoades Young Design cleverly hid this
behind a very convincing coal-effect fireplace in the snug area. We tried
to remain highly flexible with the guest accommodation, allowing space
and width throughout the guest areas for wheelchair access. The forward

l’accesso anche ai disabili, che hanno a disposizione

«Siamo molto orgogliosi di questo progetto in
particolare», conclude l’architetto. «Non si può
immaginare quanta dedizione abbiamo posto per far
sì che l’interno fosse funzionale e al contempo
confortevole, un luogo in cui sentirsi bene. È stata
necessaria un’interazione straordinaria tra il cantiere,
gli ingegneri progettisti e gli architetti dello Studio
Rhoades Young Design per realizzare questo yacht
davvero complesso, risolvendo ottimamente tutte le
problematiche derivanti dagli ingombri dei condotti
motore, della chiglia, nonché i requisiti di isolamento.
