his year has seen two major
events for Co.As.It. and the
Italian community in Victoria,
namely the funding for our
Italian Heritage Centre by the
State Government and the
considerable reduction in
funding from the Italian Government. The global
financial crisis has led the Italian Treasury to
reduce worldwide funding for the promotion of
the Italian language and culture by 40 per cent.
The reduction for Australia was contained to
approximately 30 per cent but the funding to
Co.As.It. was reduced by approximately
$500,000.
We hope that this reduction may be
temporary and that proper funding for our
important work will be reinstated as the financial
crisis recedes. Co.As.It., nonetheless, decided to
maintain all existing programs with only a small
reduction in the number of language assistants
from 41 in 2008 to 31 in 2009. Our effort in 2009
has avoided the interruption in some of our most
important education activities including our
Italian language resource centre and the
Education Officers seconded to the Museum of
Victoria and the National Gallery of Victoria. In
that regard, I take this opportunity to
acknowledge the important education role played
by our Education Officers with the Pompeii
exhibition at the Museum and the Bugatti and
Salvador Dalì exhibitions at the NGV. These
activities enable us to maintain an integrated role
in promoting Italian language and culture in
mainstream Victorian institutions.
While funding from the Italian Government
has created some concern, on a positive note I can
announce that we have finalized the lengthy
process of securing funding for our Italian
Cultural Heritage Centre from the Victorian
Multicultural Commission under the Cultural
Precincts Enhancement Fund. The amount
allocated by the State Government to Co.As.It. is
$1.45million and was announced by the Premier
of Victoria, Mr Brumby during the official
ceremony for the celebration of the Italian
Republic Day. The Centre will house a permanent
display on the contribution of the Italian
community to Australia and will showcase a
combination of objects, images and multimedia
and interactive display. The Centre will also play
a major education role by linking the contents to
school curricula and existing Co.As.It. education
programs. It is expected that this project will be
completed by July 2010.
The cultural and language activities may be
the most visible programs of Co.As.It., but we
should not forget that Co.As.It. was established
with the aim of providing welfare services to the
Italian community, and adapting its intervention
to the changing needs of our clients. In fact, 70
T
per cent of government funding Co.As.It.
receives for welfare purposes, is now exclusively
used in providing services to the older Italian
community. This generation of elderly parents
and grandparents require specific interventions,
ranging from the provision of social and
recreational activities to the provision of
domiciliary services. The Association of the
Senior Citizens Clubs, the Community Visitation
Program, the Planned Activity Centres, CACP,
Linkages Programs, NRCP, Italcare Home
Support Services, are the Co.As.It. programs
which meet the needs of older persons of Italian
origin. This Annual Report provides details of
the various activities and programs of Co.As.It.
ranging from our Child Care Centre to the Italian
Historical Society, from our welfare services to
the Italian language programs.
It is my pleasure now to
acknowledge the support of the
Victorian and Federal Governments
which allow us to provide valuable
services to the Italian community in
Victoria. I acknowledge also the Italian
Government, the Department of
Education, Employment and Early
Childhood Development and the
Catholic Education Office of Victoria,
and the parents and students who are
funding most of our education and
cultural programs. I would like also to
thank our dedicated staff and supporters
of Co.As.It.
This year we farewelled H.E.
Ambassador Stefano Starace Janfolla from the
Italian Embassy. I would like to extend my
special thanks to the Ambassador for his support
to our organization over the years and my
warmest welcome to H.E. Mr. Gian Ludovico De
Martino di Montegiordano who has taken on this
role.
Dottor Francesco De Conno, the Italian
Consul General in Victoria and Tasmania, has
also left for a new post in Vancouver. Dottor De
Conno, and especially his wife Yukiko, have
been very close to Co.As.It. taking a strong
interest in our activities. Mrs. De Conno in
particular, has established a fruitful working
relationship with our staff in organising a series
of Italian cultural initiatives. Dottor De Conno
has been replaced by Dottor Marco Matacotta
Cordella. I would like to extend to Dottor Marco
Matacotta Cordella my warmest welcome and I
am confident that Co.As.It. will continue to
improve with his support and his experience.
On this note I would like to wish all those
who have been involved with Co.As.It. a safe and
restful break over the festive season and look
forward to another fruitful year in 2010.

uest'anno due importanti
avvenimenti hanno interessato
il Co.As.It. e la comunità
italiana del Victoria: lo
stanziamento di fondi per
l'Italian Heritage Centre da parte del governo del
Victoria, e una considerevole diminuzione dei
finanziamenti solitamente erogati dal governo
italiano. A causa della crisi economica mondiale
il Ministero del Tesoro italiano ha ridotto del 40
per cento i fondi stanziati per la promozione della
lingua e cultura italiana nel mondo. Per
l'Australia i tagli si sono limitati a circa un 30 per
cento ma i fondi per il Co.As.It. sono stati ridotti
di circa 500.000 dollari.
Speriamo che questi tagli siano solo
temporanei e che dei fondi adeguati per il nostro
importante lavoro vengano ripristinati al
superamento della crisi finanziaria.
Nonostante ciò, il Co.As.It. ha deciso di
mantenere tutti i suoi programmi con l'unica
eccezione di una riduzione nel numero degli
assistenti linguistici che da 41 nel 2008 sono
passati a 31 nel 2009. Il nostro impegno nel 2009
ha impedito che alcune delle nostre attività più
importanti, come il Centro Risorse della lingua
italiana e gli Education Officer impiegati presso
il Museo del Victoria e la Galleria Nazionale del
Victoria, venissero interrotte.
A questo
proposito vorrei ricordare l'importante ruolo
educativo svolto dai nostri Education Officer in

ci permettono di mantenere un ruolo integrato

Se lo stanziamento di fondi da parte del
governo italiano ha creato qualche
preoccupazione, posso invece annunciare che
siamo riusciti ad assicurarci le sovvenzioni per la
realizzazione dell'Italian Cultural Heritage
Centre. I finanziamenti, stanziati dal Victorian
Multicultural Commission, fanno parte del
Cultural Precincts Enhancement Fund. Durante
la cerimonia ufficiale della festa della repubblica
italiana il premier del Victoria, Mr Brumby, ha
annunciato che il Co.As.It. riceverà dal governo
statale 1.45 milioni di dollari. Il Centro ospiterà
una esibizione permanente sul contributo
apportato dalla comunità italiana all'Australia e

Benché le attività culturali e linguistiche
sono tra le più conosciute tra tutti i programmi del
Co.As.It., non bisogna però dimenticare che il
Co.As.It. fu istituito con lo scopo di fornire
servizi di assistenza alla comunità italiana
adattando le sue misure di intervento ai
cambiamenti dei propri clienti. Il 70 per cento dei
fondi che il Co.As.It. riceve dal governo a scopo
assistenziale sono utilizzati per fornire servizi
alla comunità italiana dei più anziani. Questa
generazione di anziani genitori e nonni hanno
bisogno di interventi specifici che vanno dalla
organizzazione di attività sociali e ricreative alla >>

prestazione di servizi a domicilio. L'associazione
dei Circoli dei Pensionati, il Programma di visite
a domicilio, i Centri Diurni (PAG), i programmi
di assistenza (CACP, NRCP) e Italcare sono i
programmi del Co.As.It. che vanno incontro ai
bisogni degli anziani di origine italiana. Questo
rapporto annuale fornisce informazioni relative
alle attività e ai programmi del Co.As.It. che
vanno dal nostro asilo infantile alla Società
Storica Italiana, dai servizi di assistenza ai corsi di
lingua italiana.
Vorrei ricordare il prezioso supporto che il
Co.As.It. riceve dai governi federali e statali, che
ci permette di fornire un servizio di qualità alla
comunità italiana del Victoria. Vorrei inoltre
ringraziare il governo italiano, il Department of
Education, l' Employment and Early Childhood
Development e il Catholic Education Office of
Victoria, i genitori e gli studenti che finanziano
gran parte dei nostri programmi educativi e
culturali. Vorrei ringraziare anche il nostro
dedito personale e tutti i sostenitori del Co.As.It..
Quest'anno abbiamo accomiatato
l'Ambasciatore Stefano Starace Janfolla della
Ambasciata d'Italia. Vorrei esprimere i miei più
sinceri ringraziamenti all”Ambasciatore per il
supporto fornito in questi anni alla nostra
organizzazione e dare un caloroso benvenuto al
nuovo Ambasciatore in carica Gian Ludovico De
Martino di Montegiordano.
Anche il Dr. Francesco De Conno, Console
Generale del Victoria e Tasmania, è partito per
ricoprire la sua nuova carica a Vancouver. Il Dr.
De Conno, e specialmente sua moglie Yukiko,
sono stati molto vicini al Co.As.It. dimostrando
un forte interesse per le sue attività. La signora
De Conno, in particolar modo, ha collaborato
assiduamente con il nostro staff per organizzare
una serie di proficue iniziative culturali in
italiano.
Il Dr. De Conno è stato sostituto dal Dr.
Marco Matacotta Cordella a cui vorrei inviare il
mio più caloroso benvenuto, fiducioso del fatto
che di sicuro il Co.As.It. trarrà beneficio dal suo
supporto e dalla sua esperienza.
Infine vorrei augurare a tutti coloro che sono
stati coinvolti nelle attività del Co.As.It. di
trascorrere delle serene feste natalizie in attesa di
poter tornare a lavorare di nuovo insieme per un
produttivo 2010.

n altro anno è passato e il
furore continua!
Quest’anno è stato
caratterizzato da numerosi
eventi emozionanti come
L’anno internazionale dell’astronomia e la
spettacolare mostra tenutasi al Melbourne
Museum Un giorno a Pompeii, che ha
rappresentato per studenti e insegnanti
un’imparagonabile occasione per rivivere la vita
condotta ai tempi dei romani. Entrambi gli eventi
hanno influenzato le tematiche trattate nei
programmi scolastici dei corsi di italiano 2009.
Le scuole tesserate con noi rimangono circa
380, oltre alle quali vanno aggiunti gli studenti e
le organizzazioni socie che in alcuni casi hanno
fatto domanda benché residenti fuori dal
Victoria.
Anche quest’anno il Co.As.It ha pubblicato
tre edizioni di “Orizzonti” un giornalino
educativo per ragazzi dai 5 ai 18 anni. Il primo
numero, con uno speciale su Pompei e attività
educative supplementari relative all’esibizione,
ha avuto un’accoglienza calorosa. Il secondo
numero pubblicato trattava Dell’anno
internazionale dell’astronomia, mentre il terzo
aveva come argomento principale la Pasta e
forniva materiale educativo inerente alla
celebrazione del 150esimo anniversario
dell’azienda produttrice di pasta Old Macaroni
Factory di Hepburn Springs.

A queste pubblicazioni si sono aggiunte
quattro edizioni di “Il Centro”, la newsletter
ufficiale del Centro Risorse che oltre a presentare
spunti su argomenti culturali utili agli insegnati,
fornisce informazioni di carattere generale e
culturale, avvisi sui nuovi materiali scolastici
disponibili, corsi di formazione ed eventi
interessanti per studenti ed insegnati. Il Centro è
disponibile anche sul sito del Co.As.It.
Come di consueto, anche quest’anno
Nicolas Panayotis ha condotto Incontri di
Conversazione ai quali hanno partecipato più di
200 studenti, alcuni provenienti anche dai centri
rurali. Le classi rappresentano una grande
opportunità per praticare l’italiano orale in vista
degli esami scolastici. Anche le classi di
grammatica hanno registrato una buona affluenza
con più di 80 studenti alcuni provenienti
addirittura dalle città di Traralgon e Bairnsdale.
Nicolas Panayotis è anche l’insegnante di
Migration! Migration!, lezioni che attraverso
l’utilizzo di materiale fotografico e oggetti della
Società Storica Italiana, discute di temi legati
all’emigrazione degli italiani in Australia.
Un’altra iniziativa intrapresa dal Resource
Centre è consistita nel dotare il Children’s Cancer
Centre, presso il Royal Children’s Hospital, di
libri illustrati per i piccoli pazienti di origine
italiana. I libri, tradotti dall’inglese all’italiano,
fanno parte di una collezione multiculturale, a
disposizione dei bambini ricoverati e delle loro
famiglie.
Il programma di italiano per adulti (Italian
Language Classes for Adults) è attivo con 22
classi settimanali differenziate per livelli che
vanno dai principianti all’avanzato oltre che alle
classi di conversazione Italian for Italians per
studenti di origine italiana. Anche le serate
organizzate con lo scopo di far incontrare gli
studenti in situazioni conviviali hanno visto la
partecipazione di numerosi studenti. Oltre alle
Film Nights e ad altre serate conviviali, sono stati
organizzati dei tour guidati in italiano per visitare
la mostra Bugatti : Carlo Rembrandt Ettore Jean
Exhibition tenuta presso la NGV e A Day in
Pompeii ospitata invece al Melbourne Museum.
Numerose case di cura per anziani hanno
beneficiato dell’ottima reputazione che il
Co.As.It vanta in qualità di organizzazione
capace di offrire corsi di italiano di qualità per lo
staff direttamente sul luogo del lavoro. Infine,
vanno menzionati la professionalità e l’impegno
dei nostri insegnanti in quanto fondamentali al
mantenimento alto del nome Co.As.It quale
organizzazione leader nell’ambito
dell’insegnamento della lingua italiana.

A
nother year, and the
momentum continues!
The year has been
highlighted by several exciting
events which have impacted on
LOTE Italian programs, namely, the International
Year of Astronomy and of course, the spectacular
exhibition A Day in Pompeii at the Melbourne
Museum, which has provided teachers and
students with an unparalleled opportunity to
witness Roman life
School memberships remains at circa 380
with additional student and organisational
memberships, some originating beyond Victoria.
Co.As.It. has again published three editions
of its publication “Orizzonti”, (an educational
magazine for Years Prep to 12). The initial issue
has been very well received, focussing on
Pompeii, and providing supplementary
educational LOTE activities for the current
exhibition. The second edition took its theme
from the International Year of Astronomy, while
the final one focussed on Pasta, and provides
teachers with educational support material to
celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Old
Macaroni Factory in Hepburn Springs.
These publications have been supplemented
by four editions of “Il Centro”, the official
newsletter of the Centre, which is available on
the Co.As.It. website. Apart from providing
teachers with cultural material, and general
information, including new resources, it details
professional development and other events
available to teachers and students.
As is the norm, practice Conversation
Classes have been conducted by Nicolas
Panayotis this year with over 200 students
attending, some of whom were from the country
centres. As always these are of great benefit to
students who are given the opportunity to
practise Italian conversation before their
upcoming oral exams. Inservices on grammar
were attended by over 80 students, from as far
away as Traralgon and Bairnsdale.
The Migration! Migration! Program also
conducted by Nicolas Panayotis attracted over
400 primary and secondary students, and with
the aid of photographs and objects from the
Italian Historical Society, presented issues about
Italian migration to Australia.
An additional venture undertaken by the
Resource Centre was the provision of picture
story books for the Children’s Cancer Centre at
the Royal Children’s Hospital. These books,
translated from English into Italian, form part of a
multicultural collection, to be accessed by
children and their families, who, if from an
Italian background, could avail themselves of
this service at the hospital.

continue with a total of 22 classes being held
every week. These are beginner, intermediate,
advanced levels, and conversational with Italian
for Italians classes catering for students from an
Italian background. Social evenings have been
well attended with a large number of students
enjoying film nights and informal gatherings. In

their efforts that Co.As.It.’s reputation as a
leading provider of language courses is
maintained.

ASSISTANTS
This year the language
assistants program was
affected by the reduction of funds from the
Italian government to educational
organisations.
After having the maximum number of
more than 40 language assistants last year,
this year Co.As.It. was only able to sustain a
total number of 31 language assistants,
therefore only half the number of schools
that applied for an assistant were successful
in getting one.
The 2009 language assistants were
selected in collaboration with Italian
universities (namely Udine, Ca’ Foscari in
Venice, Cattolica in Milan, Genoa, La
Sapienza in Rome, the University for
Foreigners in Siena) with whom Co.As.It has
a bilateral agreement. The language
assistants have then been allocated to schools
in Melbourne, Daylesford, Wangaratta and
Myrtleford
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
For the second consecutive year
Co.As.It in partnership with VATI (Victorian
Association of Teachers of Italian) has
organised a cultural and linguistic refresher
course held at Villa Morgen, which is an ex
Benedectine monastery in Settignano, a little
village near Florence. The course took place
during the school holidays in January and
saw the participation of fifteen Italian
teachers from primary and secondary
schools of Victoria.
The course was held by local university
staff and included a full time Italian language
class and activities about Italian culture and
civilisation. It also included guided tours of
Florence and Siena.
With regard to local professional
development Co.As.It and VATI organised a
three day full immersion course in
Daylesford at the end of May which targeted
advanced level Italian teachers. The course
focused on text comprehension,
conversational skills and creative writing.
For the VCE students Co.As.It and VATI
offered a two days support program. This
preparation program for exams was held at
Co.As.It at the end of September and
attracted about150 students of Italian. The
program comprised three different lab
activities with an emphasis on conversation,
writing and comprehension of the Italian
language.
AFTER HOURS ITALIAN PROGRAM
Following last year restructure, this
year the Saturday and After Hours Italian
Program have been developed and
regrouped in two centres: Carlton for the
students in the centre-north-western regions
and Clayton for those living in the centresouth-eastern regions.
The programs are offered to students
from preschool to year 10 and to VCE
students who want to reinforce the learning
of the Italian language with specific
emphasis on verbal and written skills.
The courses are conducted on Saturday
mornings for three hours. Carlton also has
classes on Monday and Wednesday evening
for two and a half hours.
EVENTS
The third edition of PAC (Performing
Arts Competition) organised by Co.As.It
and VATI took place in August and has seen
the presence of about 17 schools, both
primary and secondary, whose students have
acted in plays and songs written by
themselves and composed on original and
reinterpreted scripts.
Winners of the PAC 2009 were
evaluated on different criteria, among them
the complexity and correct use of Italian and
the originality of their presentation.
In August Co.As.It and VATI organised
a meeting with the Italian writer and
screenwriter Vincenzo Cerami who was in
Melbourne for the Melbourne Writers’
Festival. Prior to the meeting the film “Un
borghese piccolo piccolo”, based on the
book with the same title written by Cerami,
was shown. After the movie Cerami broadly
spoke of his past screenplays including the
ones he wrote for Benigni and about the
importance of creative writing in the
development of students’ personality.

Il programma assistenti
linguistici 2009 ha dovuto
subire una riduzione numerica
a causa del taglio dei
finanziamenti agli enti gestori deciso dal governo
italiano.
Dopo il numero massimo di oltre 40
raggiunto l’anno scorso, quindi, il totale degli
assistenti è sceso a 30 e pertanto solo la metà delle
scuole che ne hanno fatto domanda ha potuto
riceverne uno.
Gli assistenti di quest’anno sono stati
selezionati in collaborazione con le università
italiane con le quali il Co.As.It. ha un accordo
bilaterale, e cioè quelle di Udine, Ca’ Foscari di
Venezia, Cattolica di Milano, Genova, Sapienza
di Roma e Stranieri di Siena, e sono stati destinati
a scuole di Melbourne, Daylesford, Wangaratta e
Myrtleford.
Aggiornamento
Per il secondo anno consecutivo il Co.As.It.
e la VATI (Victorian Association of Teachers of
Italian) hanno organizzato durante le vacanze
estive di gennaio un corso di aggiornamento
linguistico-culturale per una quindicina di
insegnanti di italiano delle scuole del Victoria,
che è stato ospitato a Villa Morghen, un ex
monastero benedettino a Settignano, vicino a
Firenze.
Il corso è stato condotto da personale
universitario locale e oltre ad uno studio
linguistico intensivo ha incluso anche aspetti di
cultura e civiltà italiana, oltre a visite guidate a
Firenze e Siena.
Per quanto riguarda invece l’aggiornamento
locale, a fine maggio Co.As.It. e VATI hanno
organizzato una tre giorni intensiva a Daylesford
per gli insegnanti di italiano di livello più
avanzato, su temi quali la comprensione dei testi
narrativi, l’esposizione orale e la scrittura
creativa.
Per gli studenti della maturità (VCE) invece
Co.As.It. e VATI hanno offerto due giorni di
preparazione agli esami, che hanno avuto luogo
al Co.As.It. a fine settembre e che hanno visto la
partecipazione di circa 150 studenti di italiano.
I lavori sono stati suddivisi in tre laboratori
condotti da altrettanti insegnanti delle secondarie
superiori e articolati sull’orale, lo scritto e la
comprensione.
Doposcuola
Dopo la riforma dell’anno scorso
quest’anno sono stati potenziati i corsi del sabato
e doposcuola concentrati in due sedi, Carlton per
gli studenti del centro-nord-ovest e Clayton per
Co.As.It. – page 12 – Relazione Annuale 2009
quelli del centro-sud-est della zona metropolitana
di Melbourne.
I corsi sono offerti a scolari e studenti di tutto
l’arco della scuola dell’obbligo, dalla Prep
all’anno 10, e inoltre agli studenti del biennio
della maturità che desiderano rafforzare
l’apprendimento dell’italiano con lezioni extra
imperniate soprattutto sulla produzione orale e
scritta.
I corsi sono offerti al sabato mattina per tre ore e, a
Carlton, anche il lunedì sera e il mercoledì sera
per due ore e mezzo.
Eventi
Per il terzo anno consecutivo Co.As.It. e
VATI hanno organizzato ad agosto la Performing
Arts Competition (PAC) un concorso artistico al
quale hanno partecipato 17 scuole elementari e
secondarie con altrettanti gruppi di scolari e
studenti, che hanno presentato performances
teatrali da loro stessi composte su testi originali o
rielaborati.
I vincitori della PAC 2009 sono stati scelti
sulla base di diversi criteri, tra i quali la
correttezza e complessità dell’italiano e
l’originalità’ della presentazione.
Sempre ad agosto, Co.As.It. e VATI hanno
organizzato un incontro con lo scrittore e
sceneggiatore italiano Vincenzo Cerami, a
Melbourne in occasione del Melbourne Writers’
Festival. L’incontro è stato preceduto dalla
proiezione del film “Un borghese piccolo
piccolo”, tratto dal romanzo omonimo dello
stesso Cerami, che ha diffusamente parlato delle
sue sceneggiature, comprese quelle dei film di
Benigni, e dell’importanza della scrittura creativa
per lo sviluppo della personalità individuale dello
studente.

I
t has been another fruitful and
engaging year supporting and
advising teachers of Italian and
responding to their many needs
and requests. This year a
concerted program of Professional Learning
focusing on using and integrating ICT and Web
2.0 resources in the Italian classrooms was
organised. To this end there have been many
workshops and professional development days
organised on such things as Podcasting,
Interactive Whiteboards, Wikis, Blogs and
Rubrics makers: all offered with a view to make
the teaching of Italian more relevant and
engaging for the students. In order to capture the
knowledge and interest generated by this
professional development. A Podcasting radio
play competition for students in primary and
secondary schools was initiated.
The Italian Performing Arts competition
held at the Darebin Arts and Entertainment centre
was another great success with 18 primary and
secondary schools participating. Over 150
students performed and many more students,
teachers, and parents participated as spectators.
Professional development has also focussed
on the pedagogical and cultural aggiornamento of
our teachers through the organisation of language
maintenance classes and Italian language
immersion weekends for primary and secondary
teachers at advanced and intermediate levels.
The organisation of the study tour for teachers to
Villa Morghen in Florence is very much part of
this effort to keep high the linguistic and cultural
standard of our teachers of Italian.
Support for our VCE students has been
provided with the preparation and distribution of
a Mock exam and the organisation of two VCE
exam Preparation days in which 340 students
participated.
The ongoing work of responding to teacher
requests, managing of networks, visiting
schools, supporting language assistants,
divulgating resources, ideas and information are
the constant and very important tasks that fully
occupy one throughout the year.

A
nche quest’anno è stato un
anno fertile e avvincente che ci
ha visti impegnati nel fornire
supporto ed assistere gli
insegnati di lingua italiana con
le loro specifiche richieste ed esigenze. Nelle
classi di italiano è stato concordato l’impiego del
programma Professional Lerning che si focalizza
sull’utilizzo e l’integrazione del ICT e le risorse
del Web 2.0. A questo proposito sono stati
organizzati molteplici workshop e giornate di
formazione su argomenti come il Podcasting, le
lavagne interattive, i Wikis, i Blogs e Rubriche il
tutto con lo scopo di rendere l’insegnamento
della lingua italiana più interessante e attraente
agli occhi degli studenti. Al fine di mettere in atto
il sapere e l’interesse generato da questi
workshop è stato istituito un concorso di radio
podcasting per gli studenti delle scuole primarie e
secondarie.
Un’altra iniziativa riuscita con successo, a
cui hanno aderito 18 scuole tra primarie e
secondarie, è stato il concorso di spettacoli in
italiano (The Italian Performing Arts) tenutosi
all’Arts and Entertainment Centre di Darebin.
L’iniziativa ha visto la partecipazione di oltre 150
studenti e di un elevato numero di insegnati e
genitori tra il pubblico.
I corsi di aggiornamento per i nostri
insegnanti hanno posto l’attenzione su tematiche
pedagogiche e culturali attraverso

l’organizzazione di classi di mantenimento della
lingua e, nei fine settimana, di classi intensive di
italiano a cui potevano partecipare insegnanti
delle scuole primarie e secondarie dei livelli
avanzati ed intermedi.
Il soggiorno-studio organizzato per gli
insegnanti a Villa Morghen a Firenze rientra
nell’impegno di mantenere alto il livello culturale
e linguistico dei nostri insegnanti.
Il supporto che forniamo agli studenti VCE
ha previsto la distribuzione di una simulazione
della prova d’esame e l’organizzazione di due
giorni di preparazione all’esame VCE a cui hanno
partecipato 340 studenti.
Il continuo venire incontro alle richieste degli
insegnanti, la gestione delle collaborazioni
istituite, le visite alle scuole, il supporto agli
assistenti linguistici, la distribuzione delle risorse
e informazioni sono compiti importanti e costanti
che ci tengono impegnati durante tutto l’anno.

Region
Professional Development
Va r i e d p r o f e s s i o n a l
activities were organised for
Italian teachers in both primary and secondary
schools of the Northern & Western regions. The
workshops were based on aspects of the Victorian
curriculum framework (VELS); methodology,
Information technology; cultural aspects and
other areas of interest and need.
Some of the professional activities offered
were: New LOTE teachers Induction; VCE
Italian; Assessment & Reporting; online Rubric
Maker; Effective LOTE Strategies; VELS LOTE
Framework; Unit planning; Games in the LOTE
program; Multimedia; Podcasting and integrating
Italian programs with the Arts (music, drama,
visual art).
Workshops for teachers of Italian were
facilitated at the annual VATI Congress and the
LOTE Ballarat Conference in August. These
included: Integrating Art & LOTE domains;
Engaging tasks & strategies for the LOTE
classroom; Planning for Language learning and
Assessment & Reporting. Teachers’ feedback
was positive and there is on-going demand for
workshops in both metropolitan and country
areas.
LOTE Leader’s Pilot Program:
The Western and Northern regions have
worked together this year to organise and pilot the
LOTE Leader’s Program in terms 3 & 4. This five
day program is designed for LOTE teachers who
want to strengthen their leadership skills to
improve the LOTE program and the learning
outcomes for students. The LOTE Project
Officers in both regions, guest speakers and
Network Leaders facilitated sessions with the
teachers. It is envisaged that this initiative will be
repeated with other LOTE teachers next year.
Italian Network Meetings
Network meetings are held after school
hours (4 -6.30 pm) and involve teachers in both
primary and secondary schools. These meetings
are held at various schools and organised in
school zones. The purpose of these meetings is to
meet with teachers to discuss issues, organise
initiatives, plan specific aspects of programs and
to provide general support and network
opportunities. The following Network groups
have met on a regular basis each term: Nillumbik,
Whittlesea, Inner North, Hume, VCE and
Western Italian Networks.
One of the Network groups, HUME
Network, in particular, was successful in
obtaining an AGQTP grant offered by the
Department of Education, Employment and
Childhood Development to work on a particular
project related to their field. It was the first time
in the region that a group of LOTE (Italian)
teachers had received such a grant. The teachers
involved have worked hard to produce a Scope &
Sequence Learning Framework in Italian from
Primary to Secondary levels in their zone. It is
expected that the teachers will share the final
product with other LOTE teachers in the region.
School Visits
School visits are an integral part of the
Co.As.It Network Leader’s role. Many schools
have been visited this year for various purposes
such as Italian language program
implementation or review; discussion of specific
issues related to the LOTE program;
work/network with the Italian teachers; assist
new teachers of Italian; meetings with principals
& LOTE teacher and to meet with the Italian
Language Assistants assigned to schools. Other
visits are more social in nature such as invitations
to Italian Days; LOTE concerts or social
gatherings with teachers of Italian.
Some highlights:
LOTE Poetry Competition and the LOTE
Primary Camp were initiatives to promote the
learning of Italian in the region. Both were very
successful with students, schools, parents and the
teachers of Italian involved.
Overall this year has been eventful and
rewarding. Professional development has been
well attended successful initiatives being
accomplished.

insegnanti è stato positivo e c’è una continua
richiesta di workshop sia nelle aree metropolitane
che rurali.

quadrimestre. Il programma, che si articola in
cinque giorni, è stato pensato per gli insegnanti
LOTE che vogliono potenziare le proprie doti di
leadership e ottenere un miglioramento
nell’andamento scolastico dei propri studenti. I
responsabili del progetto LOTE di entrambe le
aree, gli ospiti e i leader del Network hanno
moderato i seminari con gli insegnanti. Sarà una
nostra priorità fare in modo che questa iniziativa
venga ripetuta l’anno prossimo con altri
insegnanti LOTE.
Italian Network Meetings
Le riunioni con i rappresentanti del
Network sono tenute all’interno delle scuole o
nelle zone limitrofe in orari extrascolastici, dalle
4 alle 6.30 e coinvolgono insegnanti delle scuole
sia primarie che secondarie. Lo scopo di queste
riunioni è di incontrare altri insegnati con cui
discutere di eventuali problematiche,
organizzare iniziative, pianificare specifici
aspetti dei programmi scolastici e fornire mutuo
supporto a tutti i membri del Network.
I gruppi che si sono riuniti regolarmente

Visite delle scuole
I sopraluoghi e visite alle scuole sono una
parte integrante delle attività che svolge il leader
del Co.As.It Network. Quest’anno molte scuole
sono state visitate per svariati motivi come
l’implementazione o revisione dei programmi di
italiano, le collaborazioni con gli insegnanti di
italiano, il fornire assistenza ai neo insegnanti, le
riunioni con i presidi e gli insegnanti LOTE e l’
incontro con i nuovi assistenti linguistici. Altre
visite sono di natura più sociale e comprendono
gli inviti all’Italian Days, i concerti LOTE o gli
incontri con gli insegnanti.
Alcuni momenti salienti:
Il Concorso di poesia LOTE (LOTE Poetry
Competition) e il LOTE Primary Camp sono tra
le iniziative organizzate per promuovere lo studio
della lingua italiana nella regione. Entrambe
hanno registrato un grande successo tra gli
studenti, le scuole, i genitori e gli insegnanti
coinvolti.
Nel complesso il 2009 è stato un anno
appagante e pieno di eventi. Molti sono state le
occasioni di formazione professionale e molte
sono state le iniziative che sono state portate a
termine con successo.

years ago, the main focus of
the CO.AS.IT. Education
Officer located at the National
Gallery of Victoria (NGV) has
been to develop and provide Italian language
focussed student classes for either the NGV’s
permanent collection or temporary exhibitions.

NGV Schools works continuously to deliver a
high quality service to all its users. Innovative
programs engage students with original artworks
to promote and develop knowledge, skills and
understanding through visual literacy and
analysis. The atmosphere at the North Entrance
where the schools are met by the Education
Officers is one of interest and enthusiasm. It is
vital that Education Officers, including the
CO.AS.IT. Education Officer, quickly establish a
positive rapport with teachers to determine any
specific requirements for the class that the
teachers may have. Sometimes this has already
been established and confirmed via various
communications including phone calls and
emails with the teachers concerned. It is also
crucial to make students feel supported and
valued as they contribute to discussions about the
works within the context that they are being
explored. The NGV’s rich permanent collection
of Italian art is also utilised in a variety of other
ways and not just Italian language specific
classes such as introductory tours to the
collection. Other examples include works such
as Canaletto’s Bacino di San Marco: From the
Piazzetta c.1750 which features in the NGV’s
Water Trail. Intriguing works such as Amedeo
Modigliani’s Portrait of the painter Manuel
Humbert 1916 are ideal for discussions which
focus on philosophical enquiry.
Art Deco 1910-1939 exhibition 28 June - 5
October 2008
The last 12 months at the NGV have been
busy and exciting. The Melbourne Winter
Annual Report 2009 – page 18 – Co.As.It.
Masterpieces 2008 was Art Deco 1910-1939.
The exhibition comprised of over 250 works and
covered all artistic media from painting to
photography, fashion to film and architecture to
jewellery. Over 250 teachers came along to the
Exclusive Teacher Preview held on Friday 18 July
where dressing in the Deco style was encouraged.
Teachers of Italian were able to participate in this
event via a special subsidised offer provided by
VATI.

collaboration with NGV and CO.AS.IT. for
teachers and students of Italian. This resource is

A range of programs including introductory
talks and practical workshops such as Roar! and
Mirror Mirror were offered.
The Exclusive Teacher Preview presented in
collaboration with CO.AS.IT. and VATI on Friday
20 February was attended by some 100 people.
Participants were warmly welcomed by Gina
Panebianco, Head of Education & Programs and
given an insight into the fascinating world of the
Bugatti family and the works in the exhibition by
Amanda Dunsmore, Curator, Decorative Arts &

A Bugatti VIP Breakfast for key supporters
of NGV Schools was held on Wednesday 25
March. Representatives from the Department of
Education and Early Childhood Development
(DEECD) and the Catholic Education Office
were in attendance on that morning.
CO.AS.IT. Executive Committee members
were taken through the Bugatti exhibition by the
CO.AS.IT. Education Officer on Saturday 4 April.
This was preceded by NGV Schools hosting a
meeting for the CO.AS.IT. Executive Committee.
Members were greeted by Gina Panebianco and
an overview of the work being done by NGV
Schools, in particular Italian programs, was
presented along with promotional material.

Attendance at and provision of support,
suggestions and advice relating to programs
available at the NGV for teachers of Italian who
attended the annual Victorian Association of
Teachers of Italian Congress.

These sessions were presented in collaboration
with Maria Brancolino, CO.AS.IT. Network

The Melbourne Winter Masterpieces 2009
is Salvador Dalí: Liquid Desire. Over 400 people
attended the Salvador Dalí: Liquid Desire
Teacher Preview on Friday 26 June. The evening
included an overview of the exhibition by Dr Ted
Gott, Senior Curator of International Art, NGV.
Primary and secondary teachers of Italian were
invited to attend this event via a special offer
which was generously subsidised by CO.AS.IT.
and VATI.
It was also pleasing to see the
involvement of the Italian Language Assistants
whose participation on the night was again made
possible by CO.AS.IT.

assiduamente per garantire un servizio di qualità.
I suoi programmi innovativi prevedono l’utilizzo
di opere d’arte originali attraverso la cui analisi si
sviluppano le conoscenze, le abilità e la
comprensione degli studenti.
All’ingesso Nord, primo punto di incontro
tra le scuole e l’Education Officer l’atmosfera
che si respira è di interesse ed entusiasmo.
È fondamentale che gli Education Officer,
incluso l’Education Officer del Co.As.It,
instaurino immediatamente un rapporto positivo
con gli insegnati in modo da far fronte alle
eventuali esigenze che l’insegnante può avere in
merito a quella specifica classe. Spesso, prima di
incontrarsi personalmente, l’insegnate e
l’Education Officer hanno già stabilito un
contatto telefonico o via email per discutere le
eventuali richieste.
È inoltre cruciale far sentire gli studenti che
partecipano alle discussioni relative all’ambito
esaminato supportati e valorizzati.
L’abbondante collezione permanente di arte
italiana presente alla NGV, oltre che durante i
tour introduttivi delle classi in italiano, viene
anche utilizzata per altri scopi. Altri esempi
includono i lavori di Canaletto come La veduta
del bacino di San Marco dalla Piazzetta (c.1750)
esposto nella sala Water Trail della NGV o
l’intrigante ritratto di Amedeo Modigliani
eseguito dal pittore Manuel Humber nel 1926 che
presentano ottimi spunti per riflessioni
filosofiche.
Art Deco 1910-1939 in mostra dal 28 Giugno
al 5 Ottobre 2008
Gli ultimi 12 mesi alla NGV sono stati
impegnativi ed emozionanti. La mostra più
importante ospitata nell’inverno del 2008 a
Melbourne è stata Art Deco 1910-1939. La
mostra, che contava più di 250 opere realizzate
con differenti media spaziava dalla fotografia
alla pittura, dalla moda ai film e dall’architettura >>

Sono state organizzate una serie di iniziative
che comprendevano una presentazione
introduttiva alla mostra e workshop pratici come
esempio Roar! e Mirror Mirror.
In collaborazione con il Co.As.It. e VATI il
giorno venerdì 20 febbraio si è tenuta l’esclusiva
anteprima per gli insegnati (The Exclusive
Teacher Preview). I partecipanti, all’incirca un
centinaio, sono stati ricevuti da Gina Panebianco,
direttore di Education&Programs, e hanno
potuto asistere ad una presentazione introduttiva
tenuta dalla curatrice di Decorative Arts &
Antiquities Amanda Dunsmore sull’affascinante
mondo della famiglia Bugatti e sulle opere
presenti nella mostra.
Il giorno 25 marzo è stata organizzata una
colazione esclusiva (Bugatti VIP Breakfast) per i
maggiori sostenitori del NGV Schools. L’evento
ha visto la partecipazione dei rappresentanti del
Dipartimento dell’Educazione e Sviluppo per
l’infanzia (Department of Education and Early
Childhood Development (DEECD)) e il
Ministero dell’Educazione Cattolica (Catholic
Education Office).
Sabato 4 aprile i membri del Comitato Esecutivo
Co.As.It. (Co.As.It. Executive Committee)
hanno visitato la mostra guidati dall’Education
Officer del Co.As.It.. La visita guidata è stata
preceduta da una riunione tenuta da NGV
Schools per i membri del Comitato Esecutivo del
Co.As.It.. Durante la riunione, aperta con un
discorso introduttivo tenuto da Gina Panebianco,
è stato presentato l’operato della NGV Schools,
focalizzandosi sui programmi inerenti alla lingua
italiana.

La richiesta di fondi per i programmi di
italiano presentata al DEECD ha ottenuto un esito
positivo, ed ha consentito agli studenti di
partecipare gratuitamente al corso Dove c’è arte
tenutosi alla NGV durante la settimana
dell’educazione.

La mostra Salvador Dalì: Liquid Desire è
sicuramente il “Melbourne Winter Masterpieces
2009”. Più di 400 persone hanno presenziato alla
serata inaugurale tenutasi il 26 giugno. L’evento,
che includeva una presentazione della mostra da
parte del Dottor Ted Gott (Curatore Senior of
International Art alla NGV) ha visto la
partecipazione degli insegnati di italiano delle
scuole primarie e secondarie che hanno potuto
usufruire di un invito speciale generosamente
offerto dal Co.As.It. e VATI. Grazie al Co.As.It.
anche gli assistenti linguistici di italiano, con
nostro grande piacere, hanno potuto presenziare a
questa iniziativa.

Italian language programs
were presented across Museum

Melbourne Museum,
Immigration Museum, Scienceworks and for
students of Italian during 2009. The programs
included self guided and staff led sessions on the
themes of: history of Italian migration and the
precinct of Carlton, science in the home, insects
and ecosystems.
The highlight for 2009 was the Melbourne Winter
Masterpieces, A Day in Pompeii at Melbourne
Museum. An education kit Andiamo a Pompei
was developed to provide teachers and students of
Italian with authentic resources to use in the
classroom and within the exhibition. An audio
tour in the Italian language was produced for the
first time, downloadable from the Melbourne
Museum website at:

The exhibition was attended by over 42,000
school students of whom 1,600 students of Italian
attended the staff led program, Esplora Pompei
was presented by Rosaria Zarro, Co.As.It
Education Officer, and many students did the self
guide experience where they completed language
activities prepared for beginners and intermediate
level of Italian from the education kit.
During Term 3, teachers of Italian were
invited to a special viewing of A Day in Pompeii
sponsored by Co.As.It, VATI and Museum
Victoria, this event was attended by 150 teachers.
Two immersion workshops for teachers of
Italian were supported by Co.As.It, VATI and
DEECD on the theme of Roman Pompeii; some
45 teachers attended which included regional and
metropolitan teachers.
Partnerships or initiatives with external
bodies
A partnership with the MLTAV (Modern
Language Teachers Association of Victoria) and
Museum Victoria was formed; supporting the
development of a new program published online
in the Italian language.
The project led by Rosaria Zarro, Co.As.It
Education includes an audio tour of the
permanent gallery Melbourne Story.
It is available for an intermediate and advanced
level of Italian and can be downloaded from the

Il pezzo forte delle mostre ospitate a

Durante il Term 3, gli insegnanti di italiano

All’evento hanno partecipato più di 150
insegnanti. Due workshop intensivi sulla Pompei
romana patrocinati dal Co.As.It, VATI e DEECD

he Co.As.It. Italian Historical
Society (IHS), which has been
operating on a full time basis
throughout the year, has been
steadily providing services to
the community, to students and scholars, and
developing its own resources on issues ranging
from family history to women’s writing,
internment, political activism, migrant identity
and young Italian Australians.
The IHS has liaised with institutions in Italy,
in particular the Museo Regionale
dell’Emigrazione “Pietro Conti” of Gualdo
Tadino (province of Perugia), which was visited
by IHS staff in January, the Fondazione “Paolo
Cresci” per la Storia dell’Emigrazione Italiana
(Lucca), the Museo Reggia dei Volsci of
Carpineto Romano (province of Rome), the
Museo dell’Emigrazione Italiana (Rome).
Vol. 16 n. 1 of the Italian Historical Society
Journal was published at the end of 2008; the
project of making the Journal into a partly
refereed publication is currently under way.
The IHS is working on making the over
7,000 images of its photographic collection
available online through the Picture Australia
portal hosted on the website of the National
Library of Australia. Events hosted by the IHS
include the launch of Prof. Ivo Vellar’s
autobiography Adventures in Two Worlds. My
Battles With the D Word and the presentation of
John Maneschi’s memoir Giovinezza. Wartime
Memories of an Italo-Australian Schoolboy. The
IHS has also taken part in the organisation of a
cycle of lectures and debates in Italian on topics
of Italian culture, organised in collaboration
between Co.As.It., the Italian Consulate General
and the Italian Institute of Culture. Carla

Glottoantropologici, Università La Sapienza,
Rome) completed a two-month full-time
internship at the IHS in December.
A number of donations have been received,
comprising photographs, documents and realia.
On 31 May 2009 Premier John Brumby
announced $1.45 million funding from the State
Government for a permanent exhibition of the
Italian presence in Australia, as part of the State
Government Cultural Precincts Development
project. The permanent exhibition has certainly
been the most important IHS project this year and
will be a milestone in the almost 30-year history
of the Society, which will be relocated and
substantially expanded by the time the exhibition
opens in mid 2010. The IHS has been working
steadily on this project since the beginning of
2008; the Working Group, which has been
meeting regularly at the IHS under the
supervision of the Project Control Group, has
developed a brief which envisages a modern
exhibition in five sections, three of which will be
multimedia units based on the most advanced
digital and interactive technology.

Co.As.It. (SSI), che ha operato
a tempo pieno nell’anno in
oggetto, ha fornito
costantemente servizi alla
comunità, a studenti e studiosi, e ha sviluppato le
proprie risorse in campi che vanno dalla ricerca
genealogica alla scrittura delle donne,
dall’internamento all’attivismo politico e
dall’identità dei migranti a quella dei giovani
italo-australiani.
La SSI è stata in contatto con istituzioni in
Italia, in particolare il Museo Regionale
dell’Emigrazione “Pietro Conti” di Gualdo
Tadino (PG), che è stato visitato dal personale
della SSI in gennaio, la Fondazione “Paolo
Cresci” per la Storia dell’Emigrazione Italiana a
Lucca, il Museo Reggia dei Volsci di Carpineto
Romano (RM), e il Museo dell’Emigrazione
Italiana a Roma.
Il Vol. 16, n. 1 dell’Italian Historical Society
Journal è stato pubblicato alla fine del 2008; la

degli articoli saranno sottoposti a revisione

La SSI sta lavorando per mettere in rete le

La SSI ha ospitato eventi quali il lancio

Carla Torreggiani (Dipartimento di Studi
Glottoantropologici, Università La Sapienza,
Roma) ha completato un tirocinio di due mesi
presso la SSI nel dicembre 2008.
Alcune donazioni sono state ricevute,
comprendenti fotografie, documenti e oggetti.
Il 31 maggio 2009 il Premier del Victoria
John Brumby ha annunciato un finanziamento
statale di 1.450.000 dollari per una mostra
permanente della presenza italiana in Australia,
come parte del progetto governativo per lo
sviluppo dei precincts culturali. Questo è
sicuramente il progetto più importante della SSI
quest’anno e sarà una pietra miliare nella storia
quasi trentennale della SSI, che sarà trasferita in
nuovi locali e ampliata in occasione dell’apertura
della mostra alla metà dell’anno prossimo. La SSI
ha lavorato intensamente a questo importante
progetto dall’inizio del 2008; il gruppo di lavoro,
che si è riunito regolarmente sotto la guida del
gruppo di controllo, ha sviluppato un documento
che prevede una moderna mostra in cinque
sezioni, tre delle quali saranno unità multimediali
basate sulla tecnologia interattiva e digitale più
avanzata.

(LINKAGES & CACP)

he past year has been a
dynamic period for the CACP
& Linkages programs.
Employment of 3 new case
management staff, and the
expansion of community care programs via the
allocation of new EACH packages for the North
and West metropolitan regions, has made for an
interesting and somewhat challenging year for
all.
Despite these events the care of our
Linkages & CACP clients, and their family
carers, has not been compromised. We continue
to support the most vulnerable members of our
community through the provision of coordinated
and culturally appropriate home based services.
As much as possible, these services are provided
taking into account individual needs and
preferences.
Case management and direct care services
that respect the cultural values, traditions and
norms of our community contribute to our
success in achieving the programs aims and
objectives.
Other professionals referring
potential clients, often cite our cultural
sensitivities is as one of the main reasons for
referring to our services.
As has been the case for many years, lengthy
waiting lists are the norm. Many referrals wait up
to 9-12 months before a place becomes available.
Often when we contact the next prioritised
referral we find that they no longer need the
package as they have either moved into
residential care or have passed away. It is most
disheartening to know of the extensive need for
our services and not be in a position to respond
with the appropriate support when it’s most
required.
On a positive note we are pleased to report
that in the last Aged Care Allocations funding
round we were successful in obtaining 12 new
Extended Aged Care in the Home Packages
(EACH). Although minimal in number, these
new High Care packages enable us to provide a
higher level of support services to assist the
frailest members of our community. We are able
to allocate up to 15 hours of support on an EACH
package. This new allocation of packages brings
the total number of clients receiving Co.As.It.
support services on a statewide basis to 190.
Community development continues with
staff involved in numerous aged care
committees, networks and consultative forums.
This aspect of our roles provides opportunities
for networking and sharing learnings, and to keep
up to date on developments within the aged care
sector.
In conclusion, our department strives to
maintain high quality standards through a
teamwork approach and a strong commitment to
meeting the needs of our many frail, aged
Italians.

I
programmi CACP & Likages
quest’anno hanno vissuto un
anno intenso e stimolante, che
ha visto l’assunzione di tre
nuovi coordinatori (case
managers), e l’ampliamento dei programmi di
assistenza comunitaria, avvenuta grazie allo
stanziamento di nuovi pacchetti EACH per le
aree metropolitane est e nord.
Le novità non hanno inciso sulla qualità dei
servizi erogati ai nostri clienti beneficiari dei
programmi Linkages& CACP e alle loro famiglie
che hanno continuato a servirsene. I nostri
programmi mirano a supportare i membri più
vulnerabili della nostra comunità attraverso la
fornitura e la gestione di servizi a domicilio
culturalmente appropriati, che cercano di tenere
conto il più possibile delle esigenze e preferenze
dei singoli individui.
Un coordinamento dei pacchetti di cura
(case management) e dei servizi di assistenza
diretta che rispetta i valori culturali, le tradizioni
e le norme della nostra comunità contribuisce al
nostro successo e al raggiungimento degli
obiettivi prefissati.
Spesso la nostra sensibilità culturale è il
motivo per cui altri professionisti del settore ci
indirizzano nuovi potenziali clienti.
Da molti anni ormai lunghe liste d’attesa
sono diventate la norma per accedere ai servizi.
Molti potenziali clienti aspettano fino a 9-12
mesi prima che un posto sia disponibile. Capita
spesso che quando il posto è finalmente
disponibile la persona non ne abbia più necessità

in quanto o già trasferita in qualche casa di cura o
deceduta. È avvilente essere a conoscenza
dell’enorme bisogno che ci sarebbe dei nostri
servizi e non poter essere in grado di offrirli in
maniera adeguata.
Siamo invece lieti di comunicare che siamo
riusciti ad ottenere i fondi per 12 ulteriori
pacchetti di cura Extended Aged Care in the
Home (EACH) che rientrano nel programma di
assistenza a domicilio. Benché in numero esiguo,
questi nuovi pacchetti di servizi High Care ci
permettono di fornire un servizio intensivo atto ad
assistere i membri più cagionevoli della nostra
comunità. Per ogni pacchetto di servizio EACH
siamo infatti in grado di fornire fino a 15 ore di
assistenza. Con l’aggiunta di questi ultimi
pacchetti, il numero di clienti che possono
usufruire dei servizi del Co.As.It. sale a 190.
Il nostro interesse per attività che
contribuiscono allo sviluppo della comunità è
continuo, e vede il nostro personale
costantemente impegnato in numerosi comitati,
networks e forum consultativi, che rappresentano
continue occasioni per scambio di opinioni,
confronti e aggiornamenti inerenti al settore degli
anziani.
Per concludere, il nostro dipartimento si
sforza di mantenere uno standard di qualità alto
attraverso un approccio lavorativo di gruppo, e un
forte impegno nel venire incontro ai bisogni dei
numerosi e fragili anziani italiani.

he National Respite for Carers’
Program (NRCP) allows carers
of older people to have a break
to look after their own health
and well-being, knowing that
their dependants are well looked after.
Wi t h C o . A s . I t . ’s p e r s o n - c e n t r e d
approaches, individuals and their families are
supported with particular focus on older carers.
Some examples of how they are supported
include; linking families into aged care services,
providing respite for the family and referrals to
other services (allied health and organisations
that provide support and further assessments).
Respite is also provided through access to the
Co.As.It. centre-based weekly Planned Activity
Group in Rosanna and Carlton.
The Co.As.It. In-Home respite provides
short term and time limited breaks for families
and carers of individuals, enabling individuals to
engage and participate within the community and
be supported within their own home.
Throughout the past year NRCP has
supported over 150 families throughout the
metropolitan area. Co.As.It. is funded to provide
In-Home (NRCP) in the North, West and Eastern
regions and Centre-based (NRCP) through the
Working Carers funding in the Southern region.
Whilst the program is at its limits in all regions,
the extensive waitlists are coordinated to
prioritise respite placements, therefore enabling
our waitlists to be managed more efficiently.
It has become more apparent in this year
that a higher level of need is required by carers
and in some cases case management would be
appropriate. NRCP is not funded for case
management, however in some cases it has been
streamlined through to other Co.As.It. case
managed services or community packages for
more meaningful delivery of services and
supports as required.
With continuous and quality improvement,
involvement in training, and engagement in the
community, Co.As.It. brings its own cultural and
linguistically diverse (CALD) people together to
make a difference.

l National Respite for Carers’
Program (NRCP) consente, a
coloro che si prendono cura di
un anziano a tempo pieno, di
concedersi una pausa, e
dedicare un po’ di tempo a sè stessi con la
tranquillità mentale che il loro caro è nel
frattempo amorevolmente assistito.
Grazie all’approccio personale attuato dal
Co.As.It, gli individui e le loro famiglie ricevono
un sostegno che tiene particolarmente conto dei
bandanti anziani.
L’assistenza offerta ai badanti comprende
l’illustrare e connettere le famiglie ai servizi di
aiuto disponibili per gli anziani, il fornire diretto
sostegno alla famiglia (respite) o indirizzarla ad
altre organizzazioni in grado di offrire un’
assistenza maggiore. L’offerta dei servizi di
sollievo include anche i Centri diurni per adulti di
Rosanna e Carlton, entrambi operativi cinque
giorni a settimana.
Il servizio di sollievo offerto a domicilio dal
Co.As.It consente alle famiglie e ai badanti di
prendersi dei brevi periodi di riposo e permette ai
singoli di partecipare alla vita comunitaria ed
essere supportati all’interno delle loro abitazioni.
Lo scorso anno il programma NRCP ha
fornito la propria assistenza a più di 150 famiglie

residenti in tutta l’area metropolitana. I fondi che
il Co.As.It riceve prevedono servizi di cure a
domicilio (NRCP) per le zone a nord, est e ovest
di Melbourne mentre per i quartieri a sud l’offerta
è quella dei Centri diurni (NRCP).
Dato che i posti disponibili sono tutti
esauriti, le liste d’attesa sono gestite in modo tale
da favorire l’assegnazione dei posti per i servizi di
sostegno.
L’elevato livello delle cure richieste
quest’anno ha dimostrato che in alcune
circostanze un servizio di coordinamento (case
management) sarebbe opportuno. Nonostante i
fondi stanziati per il programma NRCP non
prevedano questo tipo di servizio, nei casi più
gravi si è deciso di inserire l’anziano in altri
pacchetti di cura o di affidarne la gestione ad un
coordinatore (case manager) del Co.As.It.
Per la continua attenzione posta sulla qualità
delle prestazioni offerte, la partecipazione a
seminari di aggiornamento, il coinvolgimento
nella comunità e il suo personale multiculturale il
Co.As.It è davvero in grado di offrire un servizio
che si distingue.

he Co.As.It. Day Care Centre
(or Planned Activity Group)
has been operating at Rosanna
since 1994 and continues to
attract an average of 95 frail
aged Italians to the five day program per week.
Out of all those who come, three can claim to have
attended regularly since the beginning, and
fifteen have been coming for at least ten years!
Referrals often come from family members who
have heard about the Centre from contented
friends, but often there is a long wait before a new
person can start in one of the groups.
Age is no barrier to coming. Next year we
look forward to celebrating the hundredth
birthday of two of our clients, while many seem to
get younger as we see them in successive birthday
photos!
Day Centre is a home away from home. The
warmth of friends, a pleasant environment, and
home-cooked lunch, all contribute to making the
Centre a place where our elderly want to come to
spend their day. For their families, the day is
welcome respite, and this usually includes the
time spent travelling in the taxi.
At different times during the year, tertiary
and secondary school students come for a period
of time. Their presence is always a welcome and
enriching experience for our elderly, as it helps to
bring the outside world into their lives.
We are pleased to report that in addition to
the sites operating at Rosanna and Kensington,
this year 2 new sites commenced for clients living
in the Cities of Whitehorse and Knox. The two
sites operate one day per week, Thursday and
Friday respectively, and fill a void that previously
existed in the Eastern region for an Italian specific
Planned Activity Group. Both groups are now at
capacity and offer clients the opportunity to
socialise, engage in a variety of activities and give
family carers some respite.
A variety of activities are offered to the
clients: food related, like making biscuits,
marmalade and preserving olives; health related:
doing strength-training exercises and learning
about health topics; and creative activities, all
help to maintain their skills, and help them feel
useful and connected to society. These are
important ways of helping our elderly people
continue to stay at home . The team of Day Centre
staff, cooks, volunteers and regular taxi drivers,
all play an important part in making this happen.
Carer Support
In addition to the respite support and
frequent telephone contacts, our periodic
bilingual newsletter is an important way of
maintaining contact with, and passing on
necessary information to our families.
We are associated with Carers’ Victoria, the
Alzheimers’ Association, and the Yanada House
Italian Carers’ group. Our carers can access help
and training in Italian from these organisations.
Telelink Group
The three Co.As.It Telelink groups continue
to meet weekly. The volunteer leaders can
connect up to ten people for an hour’s conference
call. The regular participation of the members of
the group is a good indication of the value they
place on this form of meeting and social support.
The HACC funded service is free for the
participants. It is available to frail aged Italians
who are have limited ability to go out, and who
enjoy talking on the phone with friends each
week.
This regular phone meeting with friends
every week is an easy and economical way of
expanding their social network, and overcoming
loneliness and isolation. The ladies always look
forward to the group meeting at Rosanna for the
annual get together, which reinforces the bonds
of friendship formed during the year.

è operativo dal 1994 e, con le
sue attività funzionanti cinque
giorni a settimana, continua ad
attrarre una media di 95 anziani italiani all’anno.
Tra tutti i nostri anziani 3 possono vantare di aver
regolarmente partecipato alle attività organizzate
fin dal primo giorno di apertura del centro,
mentre ben 15 sono coloro che ci seguono da
dieci anni!
Spesso i nostri assistiti sono segnalati dai
loro famigliari venuti a conoscenza del Centro
tramite amici soddisfatti del servizio ricevuto con
l’unica pecca negativa dei lunghi tempi d’attesa.
L’età non è un limite per partecipare alle
nostre attività.
L’anno prossimo, infatti,
celebreremo il centenario di due dei nostri clienti.
Per molti, poi, se si guardano le foto che li
ritraggono nei vari compleanni passati, sembra
che più il tempo passa e più ringiovaniscono!
Il Centro Diurno è come una casa fuori da
casa propria. Il calore degli amici, un ambiente
gradevole e un pranzo casereccio sono tutti
elementi che contribuiscono a fare del Centro un
luogo dove i nostri anziani vogliono venire a
trascorrere le loro giornate. Per le famiglie i
Centri Diurni rappresentano un’apprezzata
occasione di riposo che spesso include il
trasporto dell’anziano in taxi.
Durante alcuni periodi dell’anno gli
studenti universitari e delle scuole secondarie
vengono a farci visita. La loro presenza è sempre
calorosamente benvenuta e vista come un modo
per portare nella vita dei nostri anziani una
ventata di aria fresca, capace di farli sentire
connessi con la società che li circonda.
Siamo inoltre lieti di comunicare che oltre ai
Centri di Rosanna e Kensington quest’anno, per i
clienti che vivono nelle municipalità di
Whitehorse e Knox, sono stati aperti altri due
Centri. I nuovi Centri, operativi un giorno a
settimana, e rispettivamente il giovedì e il
venerdì, rispondono alla mancanza di centri
diurni per italiani nei quartieri a est di Melbourne.
Entrambi i Centri, oggi funzionanti, offrono ai
propri clienti la possibilità di socializzare e di
partecipare a molteplici attività ricreative
durante le quali i famigliari badanti degli anziani
possono di ritagliarsi qualche ora per sè.
Le attività ricreative proposte dai nostri
Centri includono attività culinarie come la
preparazione di biscotti e marmellate, la
conserva delle olive; e attività legate alla salute
come l’esecuzione di esercizi di ginnastica
gentile e l’acquisizione di nozioni relative alla
cura della propria persona e benessere. Lo scopo

ultimo delle nostre attività è quello di cercare di
mantenere gli anziani autosufficienti in modo che
possano vivere il più a lungo possibile nelle loro
abitazioni. Ciò è possibile attraverso l’esercizio
e il mantenimento delle loro competenze e una
continua connessione con il mondo a loro
circostante.
Il personale che lavora nei centri diurni, i nostri
volontari e i taxisti che regolarmente
accompagnano i nostri anziani hanno tutti un
ruolo fondamentale nella riuscita di questa
impresa.
Assistenza per i badanti
Oltre al supporto che forniamo tramite il
respite e le frequenti telefonate, la nostra
newsletter, pubblicata regolarmente in italiano ed
in inglese, è un mezzo importante per mantenerci
in contatto con le famiglie e trasmettergli delle
informazioni utili.
Siamo inoltre affiliati al Carers’ Victoria, al The
Alzheimers’ Association e il gruppo badanti di
casa Yanada (Yanada House Carers’ group). Tali
organizzazioni offrono assistenza e la possibilità
ai nostri badanti di frequentare corsi di
formazione in italiano.
Telelink Group
I tre gruppi Telelink del Co.As.It continuano
a sentirsi settimanalmente. I capi dei volontari
possono connettere fino a dieci persone per
un’ora di conference call.
Il fatto che i
partecipanti continuino a sentirsi con regolarità è
indice dell’importanza sociale che viene
attribuita a questo mezzo di comunicazione.
Il servizio, finanziato dal HACC, è gratis per
i partecipanti, ed è disponibile per tutti quegli
anziani impossibilitati ad uscire di casa per motivi
di salute, ma che vogliono poter comunicare
settimanalmente con degli amici al telefono.
Questo appuntamento fisso per molti
anziani è un modo economico per ampliare la
propria rete di amicizie e combattere la solitudine
e l’isolamento.
Soprattutto le signore non vedono l’ora di
potersi conoscere di persona durante l’annuale
ritrovo a Rosanna che rappresenta un’occasione
per approfondire e rinforzare le amicizie nate dai
regolari collegamenti telefonici durante l’anno.

his year celebrates 25 years of
t h e C o . A s . I t Vi s i t a t i o n
program. In the early 1980s
Sir James Gobbo, AC, CVO
has the foresight to believe that
members of our ageing Italian community would
be in need of services to assist them. With this in
mind, both he and Mrs Vernon Hillman worked
on the idea of providing social support to isolated
persons. In 1984 the Visitation Program was
officially launched and Sr Anna Dublé was
employed as Coordinator. Since then it has gone
from strength to strength; every year providing
solace and kindness to persons who now more
that ever, at this time in their lives, need a friend;
someone who will listen and understand without
making judgements. Our Co.As.It volunteers
fulfil this role.
This year we have given social support
assistance to 55 clients in their private homes. In
total, 177 clients are being visited and we have
received over 70 referrals this year. Our referrals
for the ‘in home’ visiting come from many areas:
doctors, ACAS teams, Care Managers, local
councils, RDNS and concerned family members.
The Community Visitors scheme provides visits
to 100 persons in Aged Care Facilities. These
referrals usually come via the Aged Care Facility
itself.
Our 220 strong volunteers are trained on a
regular basis to maintain privacy principles and to
listen with understanding. This year we have
delivered training in the following areas: Caring
for the Carer, Dementia, Depression, Stroke and
Power of Attorney. 31 new volunteers have
joined the team this year, most of them now
coming from the second generation of Italians.
Our services are in demand due to the fact that we
provide the social visiting component in Italian.
This maintains ‘equity and access’ of service.
One of our dear gentlemen clients was not
sure about a social visit at the point when he was
referred to our program. He did not want to show
that he needed a visitor; he was too proud. After
the first visit from our volunteer, a retired
engineer, he could not wait for the next one and
continues to enjoy the company of a much needed
understanding friend.
Our volunteers also gain so much. Very
often they find another grandparent. Someone
who shows them appreciation. The main theme
which emerges upon speaking to our volunteers is
that they feel that they are doing something
worthwhile in bringing joy to the lives of persons
who would otherwise have to suffer loneliness
and isolation in silence.
One of our dear clients calls her friendly
visitor her ‘angel’. She waits by the window for
her regular weekly visitor. This story is common.
Our dear clients do suffer from loneliness and
isolation. Often a friend can alleviate the constant
thinking about other pressures, thus providing
respite from worry and fear of the future; we have
found that with the ageing process, any acquired
language skill in English begins to diminish.
With the onset of Dementia and/or Alzheimer’s
this only worsens. Fear as a result of many of
these reasons is a common thread with which our
clients have to deal with regardless of whether
they are still at home or in an Aged Care Facility.
Families are very grateful for the service
provided by our program. Many of our referrals
come from the children of elderly persons who
are isolated. The children themselves can see
how much their parent would benefit and we are
proud to say that after visits have been initiated
there is a marked difference, in most cases, in the
demeanour of our clients: The son of one of our
clients called me after we had visited and said
that the man who greeted him at the door was not
his father; this man was happy and light hearted
whereas his father had been sad and depressed for
months. There had been a change in his attitude
even after the first visit. We have now matched
this client with a volunteer and they share stories
and laugh and our client feels he has found a
friend. They share information on how to make
wine and ‘do’ the ‘tomatoes’. These visits make a
world of difference.
Hence, we believe all of this good and kind
work needs to be celebrated.
We look forward to our celebratory lunch in
November of this year. To us here at the
Visitation Program, our volunteers are our true
heroes. Most of them are busy people, many still
working in professions, or raising families but
they still make time to light up the life of
someone in need. They give the gifts of kindness
and humanity to their fellow man. This is a great
cause for celebration.
We thank the Department of Health and
Ageing and the Department of Human Services
for providing the financial resources to
administer this program which promotes and
celebrates the spirit of human kindness and
compassion.

l 2009 celebra 25 anni di
operato del programma di
Visite a Domicilio.
Nei primi anni ’80 Sir
James Gobbo AC, CVO fu
lungimirante nel prevedere che i membri della
comunità italiana, invecchiando, avrebbero
avuto bisogno di servizi di assistenza. Fu dunque
con questa idea che Sir James Gobbo e Mrs
Vernon Hillman si misero a studiare un sistema di
supporto sociale per gli italiani in condizioni di
isolamento. Nel 1984 il Programma di Visite a
Domicilio fu lanciato ufficialmente e suor Anna
Dublè ne venne messa a capo come
coordinatrice.
Da quel momento in poi il programma ha
continuato a crescere e a portare attraverso una
schiera di volontari un po’ di conforto e gioia
nella vita di sempre più anziani bisognosi di un
amico con cui chiacchierare.
Quest’anno i clienti che hanno ricevuto
assistenza sociale a domicilio sono 55, e 177 è il
totale dei clienti visitati. 70 sono invece i clienti
che ci sono stati segnalati per visite a domicilio da
dottori, Case Managers, team del ACAS, i
comuni di residenza, RDNS o dai famigliari
preoccupati. The Community Visitors scheme ci
permette di visitare 100 persone residenti nelle
case di cura i cui nomi, solitamente, ci vengono
segnalati direttamente dal personale delle stesse
strutture.
I nostri 220 volontari partecipano
regolarmente a dei training sul rispetto della
privacy e sulle tecniche di ascolto. Quest’anno i
nostri corsi di formazione si sono concentrati
sulle seguenti aree: prendersi cura del badante, la
demenza, la depressione, l’ictus e la procura
(Power of Attorney).
I volontari che quest’anno si sono uniti al
nostro team sono 31 e per la maggior parte
appartengono alla seconda generazione di
italiani.
C’è sempre una maggiore richiesta dei
nostri servizi che, essendo in italiano, risultano di
più facile accesso per i membri della nostra
comunità.
Uno dei nostri cari clienti quando gli fu
suggerito di aderire al nostro programma
presentava delle titubanze al riguardo. Troppo
orgoglioso di sè non voleva mostrare di avere
bisogno di compagnia ma dopo la prima visita del
nostro volontario, un ingegnere in pensione,
cambiò opinione e oggi aspetta impaziente il
successivo incontro con il suo nuovo amico.
Anche i nostri volontari beneficiano di
queste conoscenze e spesso per loro è come
ritrovare un nonno e qualcuno che li apprezza per
il tempo che dedicano. Parlando con i nostri
Co.As.It. – page 32 – Relazione Annuale 2009
volontari quello che prevalentemente emerge è la
soddisfazione di fare un qualcosa che porta gioia
nella vita di persone altrimenti destinate a soffrire
la solitudine e l’isolamento in silenzio.
Una delle nostre care clienti chiama la
signora che le fa visita il “suo angelo” e
regolarmente tutte le settimane la aspetta alla
finestra. Una storia spesso comune tra i nostri
clienti che soffrono di solitudine e isolamento.
Spesso, la visita di un amico, può alleviare il peso
di pensieri pieni di preoccupazioni e incertezze
per il futuro. L’esperienza ci dimostra che, con
l’avanzare dell’età, anche coloro che
possedevano un buon livello di inglese
invecchiando tendono a perderlo, e la situazione
peggiora con il manifestarsi della Demenza e/o
dell’Alzheimer. Questa paura, insieme ad altre,
accomuna molti nostri clienti che giornalmente ci
si devono confrontare, siano essi a casa propria o
in una casa di cura.
Le famiglie dei nostri assistiti sono molto
grate dei servizi che offriamo. Spesso sono
proprio loro a segnalarci che un proprio
famigliare ha bisogno di compagnia, e spesso
sono anche i primi ad accorgersi del beneficio
apportato all’anziano dalle nostre visite. Siamo
infatti orgogliosi di affermare che anche solo
dopo una nostra prima visita è visibile una
differenza nell’atteggiamento dei nostri clienti.
Come riportato dal figlio di un nostro cliente in
una telefonata che mi fece dopo che il padre
ricevette la nostra prima visita, l’uomo che si
trovò davanti quando andò a trovare suo padre,
era un uomo sereno e gioioso molto cambiato
rispetto all’uomo depresso che era stato per mesi.
A questo signore è stato ora assegnato un
volontario con il quale il nostro cliente può
discutere e farsi due risate su come fare il vino e
crescere i pomodori. L’impatto e il beneficio di
queste visite nella vita dei nostri clienti è davvero
incredibile e riteniamo dunque doveroso
celebrare tutte queste buone azioni con un pranzo
che si terrà a Novembre. Per noi del Visitation
Program i nostri volontari sono i nostri veri eroi
che, nonostante gli impegni famigliari e
lavorativi, riescono a trovare del tempo per
rallegrare la vita di una persona bisognosa.
Riteniamo che una tale bontà di spirito e umanità
siano da celebrare!
Vogliamo infine ringraziare il Department
of Health and Ageing e il Department of Human
Services per stanziare i fondi necessari alla
gestione amministrativa di questo programma
che promuove e celebra la benevolenza dello

ITALCARE HOME SUPPORT SERVICES

his has been an extremely busy
year for Italcare and the return
of Cristina Migliorini to this
office has been a welcomed
and very positive
development. Italcare’s principal objective is to
provide domiciliary care and support to elderly
Italians, enabling them to remain in their homes
for as long as possible. Italcare services are
coordinated by a team of three in the office and
delivered by 103 carers over a wide metropolitan
area.
Much attention has been given to training
programs for our carers and we are very pleased to
say that at present 80% of staff hold a Certificate
III in Aged Care and current First Aid Certificate.
In July this year we held a very successful “Inhouse Workshop”, delivered over two nights,
which was attended by almost all carers. We
addressed issues of OH&S, processes and
protocols and amendments in laws such as police
checks. We tackled practical issues of roles,
boundaries, duty of care and responsibilities. We
had time for questions and answers. Feedback
from carers was very positive and we will
endeavor to organise similar events throughout
the year.
We continue to work very hard to maintain
and foster the excellent working relationships we
have created over time with the many external
agencies/agents. We take action at every
opportunity, to establish new contacts and open
up new niches of clientele. Italcare’s growth has
been slow but steady over the last couple of years
having grown to over 3000 hours of service per
month in this last financial year. We are confident
that this trend will continue.
We have been very selective in our
recruiting and can confidently say that we have a
group of carers who consistently deliver a high
standard of care. We are proud to say that we
have established a reputation in the industry for
being a dependable, compassionate and
professional agency.

l 2009 è stato un anno molto
animato per Italcare e il ritorno
di Cristina Migliorini ha
rappresentato un positivo e
gradito ampliamento del nostro
dipartimento.
L’obiettivo principale di Italcare è di fornire
assistenza e cura a domicilio agli anziani, affinché
possano rimanere il più a lungo possibile a casa
propria. I servizi offerti sono coordinati da un
team di tre persone operative in ufficio, ed
eseguiti da 103 badanti attivi su un’estesa area
metropolitana.
Un’attenzione particolare è stata dedicata ai
programmi di formazione per i nostri badanti, e
siamo lieti di comunicare che, ad oggi, l’ottanta
per cento del nostro personale possiede un
Certificato III in Aged Care e un certificato di
pronto soccorso. A giugno il seminario “In-house
Workshop”, che si è tenuto in due sere presso la
nostra struttura, è stato un successo, ed ha visto la
partecipazione di quasi tutti i nostri badanti.
Durante il workshop sono state discusse
tematiche riguardanti la salute e la sicurezza sul
lavoro, le procedure e i protocolli di legge come il
controllo della fedina penale da parte della
polizia, sono stati affrontati argomenti pratici
inerenti ai limiti delle proprie responsabilità, e
ribaditi i diritti e i doveri della professione di
badante e le mansioni che comporta. Per finire
non è mancato lo spazio per domande e
suggerimenti da parte dei partecipanti. Vista
l’esperienza positiva e beneficiaria per tutti,
cercheremo di organizzare altri eventi simili
durante l’anno prossimo.
Il nostro impegno per mantenere e
accrescere gli eccellenti rapporti che abbiamo
creato nel tempo con altre agenzie e agenti esterni
è continuo. Ogni occasione è buona per istituire
nuovi contatti che diano adito a nuove clientele.
La crescita di Italcare è stata lenta ma negli ultimi
anni costante, e durante quest’anno finanziario,
il numero di ore dei servizi che abbiamo fornito,
ha superato le 3000 al mese, lasciandoci perciò
fiduciosi per il futuro.
La selezione del nostro personale è molto
severa, e possiamo tranquillamente ammettere
che il nostro gruppo di badanti fornisce un
servizio di ottimo livello. Siamo dunque fieri di
dire che la nostra agenzia si distingue in questo
settore per l’essere affidabile, sensibile e
professionale.

Senior Italian Citizens’ Clubs of Victoria
(Circoli Pensionati)

he Italian Senior Citizens’
Clubs or Circoli represent an
important element of contact
between Co.As.It and the
Italian older community.
Through the Circoli, Co.As.It is able to monitor
the needs of each Circolo but also of its members.
Co.As.It takes part and looks after the
internal life of the Circoli, providing assistance
and advice when they need to liaise with
authorities such as the local Council and
Department of Justice. Assistance is also
provided to the Circoli when they conduct Annual
General Meetings, in preparing financial reports
or when they need to follow specific
administrative procedures.
Co.As.It’s relationship with the Circoli is
not limited to the provision of support and
assistance. Co.As.It, through regular meetings
with the Presidents of the Circoli, suggests and
assists in organising activities such as music
concerts, bocce tournaments and film days.
The Italian Senior Citizens’ Clubs represent
for the majority of their members an occasion of
recreation and social gathering that cannot be
renounced. On the other hand Co.As.It sees the
Circoli as an important means to provide the
Italian community with important information
about the availability of social and aged care
services.
The Senior Italian Citizens’ Clubs together with
Co.As.It are very often happy to take part in
projects that aim to investigate the emerging
needs within the older Italian community. The
information collected is used to provide
important data to appropriate authorities,
including governments and government
departments.
WINS
The “WINS” program (Workers Injured
Network Services) is an ongoing program based
on the funds received by the Victorian
WorkCover Authority. Clients attending this
program are workers who were injured in the
workplace. Due to their injuries they are not able
to resume work. Co.As.It assists them with
administrative paperwork, advocate on their
behalf and provide information useful to
overcome language barriers when dealing with
various authorities.

I
Circoli dei Pensionati
continuano ad essere un
importante elemento di
collegamento tra il Co.As.It. e
la comunità degli anziani
italiani. Attraverso i Circoli il Co.As.It. svolge
un’azione di monitoraggio dello sviluppo delle
esigenze specifiche sia di ognuno dei Circoli sia
dei singoli membri dei Circoli stessi.
Il Co.As.It. partecipa e presta particolare
attenzione alla vita interna di questi sodalizi,
fornendo loro assistenza in quelle occasioni in cui
si trovino a doversi confrontare con specifiche
procedure burocratiche (Assemblee Generali
annuali, rapporti finanziari, ecc.) ovvero con gli
uffici pubblici ai quali devono fare riferimento
(Ministero della Giustizia, Amministrazioni
comunali, ecc.).
Il rapporto con i Circoli non si limita alla
semplice azione di supporto ed assistenza. Il
Co.As.It., attraverso periodiche riunioni con i
Presidenti, propone iniziative da svolgere in
comune, che si concretizzano, ad esempio, in
concerti di musica, tornei di bocce, proiezioni di
film, ecc..
I Circoli dei Pensionati costituiscono da
anni ormai, per la stragrande maggioranza dei
loro membri, un irrinunciabile momento di
aggregazione sociale e di svago. Per il Co.As.It.,
però, essi non assolvono solo a questa funzione. I
Circoli sono un importante veicolo per la
diffusione di informazioni, spesso basilari, in
merito alla situazione dei servizi socioassistenziali messi a disposizione dai vari livelli
della Pubblica Amministrazione. È altresì vero
che gli stessi Circoli, di concerto con il Co.As.It.,
danno frequentemente la loro disponibilità ad
essere coinvolti in iniziative tese alla raccolta di
dati utili al Governo a tracciare il profilo dei
bisogni emergenti all’interno della comunità
anziana residente in Australia.
WINS
Il Programma “WINS” (Workers Injured
Network Services) procede regolarmente sulla
base di un contributo da parte della Victorian
WokCover Authority. I clienti di questo servizio
sono lavoratori che hanno subito incidenti sul
lavoro e che, per questo, non possono essere
integrati nella forza-lavoro e sono quindi
legittimati ad avere i benefici della copertura
assicurativa. Il Co.As.It. li assiste nelle loro
pratiche burocratiche e fornisce loro consigli ed
informazioni utili a superare possibili difficoltà di
natura tecnica ovvero linguistica nei loro rapporti
con le Autorità.

here have been numerous
activities conducted by the
Health Promotion and
Community Development unit
in promoting the health and
well-being of older Italians in Victoria. These
activities included various information sessions
for the community, service providers and health
professionals, and specific projects and programs
aimed at improving the quality of life of the Italian
community in Victoria. Some of the projects and
initiatives included the following.

Information sessions provided to staff
working in mainstream residential care
facilities and community based
organisations on the cultural norms and
values of Italians living in Victoria. These
sessions were conducted in both Melbourne
and rural Victoria.
"
Information sessions for the Italian
community focussing on pathways to
residential and community care. These were
conducted in the Melbourne metropolitan
area and rural Victoria.
"
Information sessions for the Italian
community focussing on quality use of
medicines.
These sessions were the
outcome of a formal partnership with the
National Prescribing Service Inc (NPS) and
the Federation of Ethnic Communities’
Council of Australia (FECCA). Three
General Practitioners, a pharmacist and a
consultant physician delivered the
information sessions to the Italian
community. The health professionals
utilised an Italian power-point presentation,
developed by NPS, on “Quality use of
Medicines”. The sessions offered ample
opportunity for participants to ask questions.

Production of an Italian calendar in
partnership with the National Prescribing
Service Inc (NPS) and the Federation of
Ethnic Communities’ Council of Australia
(FECCA) for distribution to the Italian
community, community aged care
organisations and residential care facilities.
The calendar included photographs from the
Italian Historical Society depicting the lives
of Italians in Australia from the mid 1900s as
well as a pertinent messages to promote the
quality use of medicines amongst older
Italians. The calendar recently won an
award from the NSW Multicultural Health
Communication (MHC) Service Awards in
the category of Non-Government Fact
Sheet/Brochure/Patient Information.

project aims at promoting and facilitating

care needs, to aged care support services.

that have particular emphasis on health
promotion, community education and
information, and residential aged care.

Continued facilitation of the Workers
Injured Network Services Project (WINS)
funded by the Victorian Work Cover
Authority. This project aims to support
participants who are especially
disadvantaged because of language and
literacy skills. The project offers advice,
support, and advocacy.
"
Participation in the Supported Access Pilot
Project (SAPP) funded by the Department
of Human Services. This project aims to
assist ethno-specific and multicultural
agencies explore and develop mechanisms
that will assist Home and Community Care
(HACC) eligible people from CALD
backgrounds to access and negotiate HACC
and other related services.
The successful implementation of these
activities highlight that there is a continuing need
to provide information and assistance to the
Italian community and to generic service
providers. There is also a continuing need for
governments and government departments to
fund Co.As.It. to assist our community in having
information to access appropriate aged care
services.

e numerose attività organizzate
quest’anno dal HPCD hanno
riguardato soprattutto la salute
e il benessere degli anziani
italiani nel Victoria. Tra queste
iniziative ricordiamo vari seminari informativi
rivolti sia alla comunità che ai professionisti del
settore sanitario e assistenziale e, progetti
specifici con lo scopo di migliorare la qualità
della vita nella comunità italiana del Victoria. I
numerosi progetti e iniziative realizzate
quest’anno hanno incluso:

Lo svolgimento di seminari informativi per
la comunità italiana, sia nella città di
Melbourne che in alcune zone rurali, per il
personale delle case di cura e le
organizzazioni comunitarie sulle norme e i
valori culturali propri degli italiani che
vivono nel Victoria.

La conduzione di seminari informativi
nell’area metropolitana di Melbourne e in
alcune zone rurali del Victoria per la
comunità italiana
sulle procedure da
seguire per ottenere assistenza domiciliare e
comunitaria.

Seminari informativi sull’utilizzo corretto
dei medicinali indirizzati alla comunità
italiana e presentati da tre medici di base
(GP), un farmacista e un medico consulente.
I seminari sono stati il risultato di una
collaborazione tra il National Prescribing
Service Inc (NPS) e il Federation of Ethnic
Communities’ Council of Australia
(FECCA) e hanno visto l’utilizzo di una
presentazione power-point ideata dal NPS
sull’utilizzo corretto dei medicinali
(Quality use of medicines). I seminari, che
si sono svolti in italiano, hanno dato ampia
possibilità ai partecipanti di fare domande.

stato poi distribuito alla comunità italiana
attraverso le organizzazioni e le strutture
che forniscono assistenza agli anziani. Il
calendario, rivolto ad un pubblico di
anziani, includeva fotografie prese dagli
archivi della Società storica italiana che
ritraevano la vita degli italiani in Australia a
partire dalla metà del 1900 e messaggi di
testo che promuovevano l’assunzione
corretta dei farmaci. Il calendario ha
recentemente vinto il premio NSW
Multicultural Health Communication
(MHC) Service Awards nella categoria
informazioni per pazienti/brochure/ fogli
informativi non governativi.

Il proseguimento del progetto Workers
Injured Network Services Project (WINS)

Authority che mira a fornire sostegno alle
vittime dei sinistri sul lavoro svantaggiati
per la scarsa conoscenza della lingua
inglese. Il progetto offre consigli, sostegno e
supporto legale.

Il coinvolgimento nel progetto Supported
Access Pilot Project (SAPP) finanziato dal
Department of Human Services il cui scopo
è di assistere agenzie multiculturali ed etnospecifiche nell’indagare e sviluppare nuove
tecniche che rispondano in modo mirato alle
esigenze culturali e linguistiche dei clienti
provenienti da un background CALD ed
idonei ad usufruire dei servizi comunitari
(HACC).
La prosperità di queste attività sottolinea che
c’è un persistente bisogno nella comunità italiana
e, per coloro che forniscono servizi, di ricevere
assistenza e informazioni. Affinché il Co.As.It
possa sopperire a questa domanda in modo
adeguato, è necessario che i governi e i
dipartimenti governativi continuino a stanziare i
fondi.

TOMMASO FIASCHI CHILD CARE CENTRE

here has been a profusion of
changes in the child care field
in the past year. We are now
part of the Department of
Education and Early
Childhood Services (DEECD) and in May, the
new Children’s Services Regulations 2009 was
launched. Other changes include the introduction
of The Victorian Government and Federal
Government Early Years Learning and
Development Framework. The Federal
Government has introduced the Child Care
Management Systems (CCMS) and we
commenced on the 19th January 2009.
We are fortunate to have implemented the
TE Whariki Early Childhood Curriculum, which
is a frame work that allows children’s early
learning and development within a socio-cultural
context. It emphasises the learning partnership
between teachers, parents and families.
Parent who attend the parent/teacher
evening are able to see how this exciting
curriculum works.
Our centre continues to attract families from
the Italian community as well as children from
other cultures. At our Christmas concert in 2008,
the 3-5 year old children sang songs in 5 different
languages.
We have had visitors to the centre including
the farm animals, Victorian Police Force and
Responsible Pet Education. The children enjoy
twice weekly Italian lessons and weekly musical
movement sessions.
All staff have their anaphylaxis
management training and have attended inservices training in areas that complement their
skills.
We have been reaccredited as a Start Right
Eat Right Centre and achieved a high rating in all
areas for the accreditation from the NCAC.

urante lo scorso anno ci sono
stati numerevoli cambiamenti
all’interno del settore
dell’infanzia. Da quest’anno
siamo entrati a far parte del
Dipartimento dell’Educazione e Servizi per
l’Infanzia (Department of Education and Early
Childhood Services DEECD) e a maggio c’è
stato il lancio ufficiale della nuova
regolamentazione inerente ai servizi per
l’infanzia 2009. Tra gli altri cambiamenti
apportati è da includere l’introduzione delle
politiche del governo del Victoria e del governo
federale inerenti all’insegnamento e allo
sviluppo della prima infanzia (The Victorian
Government and Federal Government Early
Years Learning and Development Framework).
Il governo federale ha inoltre introdotto un
sistema di assistenza per i bambini (the Child
Care Management System CCMS) che da noi è
stato incominciato il 19 Gennaio 2009.
Siamo felici di aver implementato tra le
nostre tecniche di insegnamento il TE Whariki
Early Childwood Curriculum, una struttura
lavorativa che permette l’apprendimento e lo
sviluppo dei bambini all’interno di un ambiente
socio-culturale che enfatizza il legame che
insegnati, genitori e famiglie hanno nel loro ruolo

di educatori.
I genitori che partecipano alla serata
genitori/insegnanti hanno la possibilità di vedere
come funziona questo entusiasmante metodo.
Il nostro centro continua ad attrarre sia
famiglie di origine italiana che non. Al concerto
di Natale del 2008, i nostri bambini, di età
compresa tra i 3 e 5 anni, hanno cantato canzoni in
ben cinque lingue diverse.
In aggiunta alle lezioni di italiano e di
musica, che si tengono rispettivamente due volte
e una volta a settimana, tra gli ospiti che
quest’anno hanno visitato il nostro asilo
ricordiamo la fattoria degli animali, la Polizia del
Victoria e l’educazione agli animali domestici.
Tutto il nostro personale, oltre a dei seminari
inerenti i ciascuni ambiti di competenza, ha
frequentato il corso per sapere come comportarsi
in caso di crisi anafilattica.
Il nostro asilo inoltre è stato riaccreditato
come Start Right Eat Right Centre e ha raggiunto
il massimo punteggio in tutte le aree di
valutazione da parte del NCAC.
