JULY 24, 2011: SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Friends in Christ,
Cari amici in Cristo,
"The Best Feast in the East" is upon us! And we canons are delighted that, for the first time, we will be partaking in the great Feast of St. Rocco in Glen Cove. There
are a number of sacred liturgies to observe this grand occasion:
1. Feast Workers’ Mass – On Monday, July 25th at 7
p.m. a simple Mass will be offered in thanksgiving for all
the sacrifices and offerings that have been made that
make our feast possible. In a special way, we will ask for
God’s blessing upon all the volunteers and patrons of this
year’s feast. As you know, the feast plays an essential
role in sustaining our parish. The countless hours of service translate into many concrete benefits for our community. Therefore, I invite the whole parish to come to this
Mass to thank the Lord for all the hard work, which the
organizers and workers have already done, and will continue to do to make the feast a great success.
2. The inaugural Mass – It is a great pleasure to welcome the new pastor of St. Patrick, and my superior, the
Prior of the Canonry of St. Leopold, Father Daniel Nash,
to preside at this bilingual liturgy. Fr. Daniel has placed
posters to advertise the feast of St. Rocco at St. Patrick,
for the first time as far as anyone can remember.
3. Vespers with the Bishop – On Wednesday at 6:30
p.m., His Excellency, the Most Reverend William Murphy, will preside at solemn Vespers (Evening Prayer) and
will impart the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
This will be Bishop Murphy’s first visit to the Feast of St.
Rocco.
4. Vespers – Some may be wondering, what is Vespers? It is one of the pivotal hours of the Divine Office or
Liturgy of the Hours by which the Church sanctifies time.
Each day is divided into moments of prayer: morning,
day, evening and night. To these is also added an office
of readings, which can happen at different times of day.
The Liturgy of Hours aims at fulfilling Our Lord’s command to pray without ceasing (Luke 1:18) and St. Paul’s
exhortation to “pray always” (1 Thes 5:17). This art of
common prayer is one of pillars of the way of life of the
Canons. So, by offering Evening Prayer during the feast,
we Canons hope to introduce to you another important
part of our life as priests.
"The Best Feast in the East" è arrivata! E noi canonici
Come sapete,
preghiera: mattina, giorno, sera e notte.
God bless you,
Father Elias Carr, Can.Reg.
Dio vi Benedica!
