Symposium Guide
Some useful information
From the airport to the city centre
From the airport you can reach your hotel by taxi or by airport shuttle Volabus.
Taxi cost is very variable depending on the traffic and it starts form about 20÷25€.
Volabus is of course subject to a timetable, it takes about 30 minutes to reach the city centre
with
several
stops,
and
it
costs
6€.

Reaching the symposium location
The symposium location, Palazzo Ducale, is located in Piazza De Ferrari, the very centre of the
city. Piazza De Ferrari is easily reachable with a short and nice walk from the hotels in the city
centre or near the old harbour. Hotels near Principe require a bit longer walk of about 20
minutes.
Nevertheless it is possible to reach it by bus or by metro. There are a lot of buses stopping in
piazza De Ferrari and coming from both sides of the city, you may ask for details to your hotel.
The metro reaches Piazza De Ferrari from Brignole station, first stop 5 min, or from Principe
station, fourth stop, about 15 minutes.
Since we are in a public building, please remember not to leave laptops, phones or any other
valuables unattended.
Public transport tickets
Genova has a good buses network and a short but efficient metro connecting the two main
railway stations, Brignole and Principe, and passing through the city centre and Piazza De
Ferrari. You can buy tickets and the newsagents and tobacconist shops and railway stations.
A standard ticket cost 1.5€ and last for 100 minutes with free access to
the metro.
If you plan to use public transports several times in a single day you may
purchase a Genova-Pass 24h ticket fro the first stamp, for 4.5€.
There is the possibility to have a 24h ticket for 4 people travelling
together for 9€.
Beside that a carnet of 5 24h tickets is available for 18€
Finally if you plan to visit some city museums you may be interested in a
museum+buses card, giving access to 22 museums and to the public
transports for 24 h at 13.5€ or 48h at 20€.

Shops, chemist’s and banks
Several shops, coffee shops and restaurants are available in the surroundings of the symposium
location. There are several supermarkets also, the closest is just behind theatre Carlo Felice
exiting the congress location on the opposite side of Piazza De Ferrari, on the left.
Shops are normally open 9 ÷ 12:30 – 15:30 ÷ 19:30 from Monday afternoon to Saturday.
Food shops may follow a slightly different timetable and they may be closed on Wednesday
afternoon.
Chemist’s usually open from Monday to Friday 8:30÷19:30, while on Saturday and Sundays they
follow a shift so it is necessary to find out the nearest one open.
Supermarkets are normally open continuously up to 20 in the evening and on Sunday morning.
Banks are generally open Monday-Friday 8:30 ÷ 13:45 and 14:45÷15:45, but the timetable and
the opening days may vary from bank to bank.
Short walks
Exiting the symposium location there are several possibilities for a relaxing walk and a visit to
the city, here you have just some ideas.
Piazza Matteotti and Santo Stefano Cathedral : exiting
Palazzo Ducale on your right after few steps you will find
Piazza Matteotti, with the other entrance to Palazzo
Ducale and crossing the square you will be in a
pedestrian area with on your right the Cathedral The
pedestrian area continues down to the old harbor.
Piazza San Matteo: exiting Palazzo Ducale on going on
your left you will find vico San Matteo and briefly you
will reach a typical small square with a pleasant church
devoted to San Matteo.
The Palace Street: a bit longer walk (about 500m)
keeping the left side of Piazza De Ferrari will bring you
in Via 25 Aprile, in Piazza Fontane Marose and on your
left you will find Via Garibaldi with its historical palaces.
Finally a shopping tour in Via XX Settembre facing just in
front of Palazzo Ducale in Piazza De Ferrar
Since you are visiting an historical center, use the typical
care to avoid inconveniences.
Just in front of Sala Camino, room A, there is the Historical Archives of the City of Genova,
where it is possible to visit the collection of weights and measures adopted in Genova before the
introduction of the metric system. The archive is open Wed-Thu 9-12:30 and 14-17, Fri 9-12:30.
Symposium Generalities
In the organization of Symposium programme we have tried to use as few parallel session as
possible in order to give the attendees the possibility to follow as many presentations as possible
and to have the maximum exchange of knowledge.
The first day the symposium will be located in two rooms: Sala del Minor Consiglio (A) and Sala
Camino (B).
Symposium opening, welcome addresses and first keynote lecture will be given in Sala del Minor
Consiglio (A), then two parallel sessions are foreseen. Next days keynote lectures (9:30) and
sessions will be given in Sala Camino (B).
Lunches and breaks, which are all included in the symposium fees, will be served in the
colonnade just outside Sala Camino (B), where on Thursday after lunch there will be a Poster
session.
The first day we will have a welcome dinner in pizzeria in front of the sea in the old harbor.
Let’s meet just outside palazzo Ducale on Piazza De Ferrari at 18:45.
On Thursday late afternoon a guided tour is foreseen, please make sure to be confortable for a
walk in the city. Meet us with the guides at 17:45 in front of Palazzo Ducale. Then we will have
the Symposium dinner in the Cathedral cloister.
Arriving in the cloister at about 19:30, we will visit the museum, then we will have a cocktail.
Music performances will introduce dinner and dessert.
