It gives me great pleasure to welcome the 26th
edition of the MYBA Charter Show for the 14th
time in Genoa this year.
In my capacity as the Mayor of Genoa, I am
grateful to the organisers, including MYBA,
Pesto Sea Group and Marina Molo Vecchio for
choosing once again Genoa as the venue for the
Charter Show.
We are proud to host this event, one of the most
important international exhibitions solely for
charter professionals and luxury charter yachts,
attended by the most prestigious charter agencies and brokers worldwide.
The Superyacht industry has developed and
evolved immeasurably over the past two decades and MYBA has adopted an increasingly influential and significant role in this industry.
We appreciate MYBA as an internationally
renowned professional organisation, whose
members are involved at all levels within the
Superyacht Industry, such as brokerage, charter, technical management and construction of
large yachts.
Genoa is the capital of Liguria, one of Europe’s
largest cities on the Mediterranean Sea and the
largest seaport in Italy. Favoured by its strategic
geographic location, it is placed at the centre of the
important industrial and commercial area of northern Italy and southern Europe. The port of Genoa covers an area of about 700 hectares of land
and 500 hectares on water, stretching for over 22
kilometres along the coastline, with 47 km of maritime ways and 30 km of operative quays.
Not too far from the MYBA quay you’ll discover
an unforgettable city, rich in art, history, music,
architecture and gastronomy. At the base of the
old town - with its many well preserved narrow
alleys that still look and feel like the Middle
Ages - you can find the city’s renovated historic
port and newer dockside areas. Cruise liners,
fishing boats, ferries and yachts crowd the waters, while Genoese architect Renzo Piano’s
transformation of the waterfront includes a panoramic elevator and a glass biosphere.
A number of truly outstanding art galleries are
housed within grand palaces and historical buildings around central Genoa, containing many
masterpieces from previous centuries.
Both the Museo Palazzo Rosso and the Museo
Palazzo Bianco in Garibaldi Street stand out as
being two of Genoa’s most important art galleries and museums.
Genoa was the European Capital of Culture in
2004. It was an opportunity for the city to generate considerable cultural, social and economic
benefits and helped foster urban regeneration,
change the city’s image and raise its visibility
and profile on an international scale.
Part of the old town was inscribed on the World
Heritage List (UNESCO) in 2006. It is worth a
visit.

DISCOVER GENOA
GENOA
Genoa is a city rich in art and history that must be discovered
step by step, by entering its labyrinth of narrow alleys called ‘caruggi’.
The historical center is one of the biggest in Europe. Certain views
give us a glimpse of the Middle Ages. But we also find the splendid palaces, the Palazzi dei Rolli that along with the Strade Nuove became
a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2006. Built between
the end of the Sixteenth and the Seventeenth Centuries by the patrician families of Genoa as their private residences, the magnificent
homes were enrolled in a system of “public accommodations” in order to host the visits of “cardinals, princes and kings.”
Each year Genoa celebrates its marvelous historical palaces with
three events, that in 2014 will take place on March 29-30; May 2425; September 20-21.
To enjoy the beauty of the UNESCO sites, every Saturday afternoon there are guided visits to the Rolli palaces. There is also a
multilingual guided tour of the historical centre that should not
be missed which also runs during the weekend. Audio services in
six languages allow the visitor to discover the city on his/her own.
The Card Musei or Museum Card grants discounted access to museums and other services. The new APP Genova Official Guide, a
free APP in Italian and English dedicated to Genoa. It contains tourist information, events, itineraries and other useful info. The APP
is a complete directory of services offered to visitors. Available for
iPhone and soon also for Android (Info: www.visitgenoa.it).
Genoa offers a rich and differentiated panorama of museums
in settings that are often historical: the high quality of its artistic
heritage is displayed in opulent Baroque buildings. Archeological
treasures, natural history and extraordinary historical documents,
along with artistic masterpieces evoke the past glory of the city and
its famous protagonists: Columbus, Rubens, Van Dyck, Paganini.

The Museums of Strada Nuova in Via Garibaldi represent a unique cultural institution for the quality and prestige of the offering.
One single museum network includes Palazzo Bianco, Palazzo
Rosso and Palazzo Tursi, masterpieces of architecture and the residential culture of Genoa, now part of the UNESCO heritage. Here
extraordinary collections of Italian and Flemish art may be viewed,
including works by Rubens, Van Dyck, Veronese, Caravaggio, Guido
Reni and the main artists of the Genoese school, displayed in sumptuous rooms with frescoes and original furnishings.
The grandiose, refined qualities of the Genoese Baroque residences
is evident also in the Museum of Palazzo Reale and the National
Gallery at Palazzo Spinola di Pellicceria, where it is possible to
admire the rich collections of paintings of the Genoese aristocracy,
with works by Rubens and Van Dyck among the furnishings, silver,
tapestries and household goods.
Palazzo Ducale, which had been the residence of the Doge and seat
of the Government of the Republic of Genoa, is today an important
cultural meeting point for the city and hosts prestigious international exhibitions. On display until April 27 2014, Edvard Munch,
the only exhibitions organized in Italy on the occasion of the 150th
anniversary of Munch’s birth. 80 works will document the career of
one of the great protagonists of Twentieth Century European art.
Until June 8, the exhibition Gianni Berengo Gardin. Storie di
un fotografo, a glimpse of political, social, economical and cultural
Italian lifestyle from the boom years until today. On display is also a
section dedicated to Genoa, the photographer’s city of birth.
From September 27 to February 15 2015 Frida Khalo and Diego Rivera, an exhibition that will investigate the relation between
these two artists: in fact the work of Frida Khalo alone, seems to be
incomplete without the support that Diego offers to her fragility.
Genoa is city of the sea: “admirablement située en amphitheatre sur la mer”, to cite Stendhal, it is the largest port in Italy and
among the most important in the Mediterranean.
Over the last twenty years the city has been renovated. Without a
doubt, a real rebirth began when the area of the Porto Antico was
restored to public use, thanks to the work of architect Renzo Piano
who redesigned the area in 1992. At the Porto Antico there is the
Aquarium of Genoa with its new Whale Tank, the Galata Museum of the Sea and the Nazario Sauro submarine; the Città dei
Bambini e dei Ragazzi (the City of Children and Kids) with the De
Amicis Library for children; the Biosphere and the panoramic
Bigo elevator; the National Museum of the Antarctic; Dialogo
nel Buio (Dialogue in the Dark); and the Luzzati Museum.
Speaking of the sea, we cannot overlook the International Boat
Show that will take place from October 2 to 7 and every year attracts visitors from all over the world. For the Boat Show, Genoa
“wears blue” with Genoa in Blu, a program of events that enlivens
the entire city.
Genoa is a city of research and technological innovation.
It is the headquarters of important industries, research centers,
and is one of the leading cities in Europe in the sector of innovation
and advanced technology.
As a candidate to become European Smart City, Genoa demonstrates special attention to the application of new technologies and ICT
for the sustainable development of the community.
Genoa is also home to the IIT – the Italian Institute of Technology,
one of the most advanced scientific research centers in the field of
nanotechnology and robotics.
The spread of science inspires great events such as the Festival
of Science, held for the first time in 2003 and which has become
over the years an important moment for the celebration of scientific achievement in Italy and Europe.
The 2014 edition will take place from October 24 to November
2, 2014 and it will be dedicated to the theme of Time: exhibits,
interactive displays, laboratories, conferences, meetings, round
tables, events and shows transform the city for 10 days into a true
scientific village.
Genoa is a city to live in all year long: in the summer with music,
concerts, live events in the area of the Porto Antico, in the center
of the city or in the fishing villages near the sea still in town, visitors can swim and take advantage of the entertainment. In the
winter, there are prestigious art exhibits, theatre seasons that take
in traditional plays or opera, Christmas traditions, historical crèche
scenes. In Spring and Autumn, there are hiking trails even within
city limits, boardwalks along the sea and paths in historical parks,
also on the hills above the city, where there is an impressive system
of fortresses.
Moreover, Genoa has quick access to the main local tourist sites on the
Riviera such as Portofino, the Cinque Terre, Sanremo and Alassio.
