IL CONDIZIONALE
Definizione
In inglese il condizionale corrisponde
all’italiano:
Si distinguono due tempi del condizionale:
• Condizionale Presente (io andrei)
• Condizionale Passato (io sarei andato)
Come si forma
Il condizionale presente inglese è un tempo composto che
utilizza l’ausiliare would e la forma base del verbo (infinito
senza to). La stessa forma viene utilizzata per tutte le
persone.
AFFERMATIVA
I would go.
INTERROGATIVA
Would you go?
NEGATIVA
I wouldn’t go.
INTERROGATIVA-NEGATIVA
Wouldn’t you go?
Quando si usa -1
Per esprimere un desiderio presente, in questo caso
si usa wish + Past simple.
I wish I lived in Cuba.
Vorrei vivere a Cuba.
Quando si usa -2
Per esprimere un rimpianto, in questo caso si usa wish
+ Past perfect
I wish I had won the lottery
Avrei voluto vincere la lotteria.
Quando si usa -3
Per esprimere insoddisfazione, in questo caso si usa
wish + would + forma base del verbo
I wish you wouldn’t be so lazy.
Vorrei non fossi così pigro.
Quando si usa -4
Si utilizza il condizionale anche con espressioni che
rendono le frasi più ridondanti, quali:
• If only
If only I had more time…
• It’s time
It’s time you stopped screaming.
• I would rather
I’d rather you didn’t go out with John.
Condizionale misto
In alcuni casi è possibile combinare il periodo ipotetico di
secondo tipo a quello di terzo. Ciò avviene in quei casi in cui,
se si fossero verificati certi avvenimenti nel passato, avremmo
conseguenze diverse nel presente; questa costruzione prende
appunto il nome di condizionale misto (mixed conditional).
If I hadn’t bought this house I would live with my parents.
Alternative ad If -1
Le seguenti espressioni possono sostituire if:
• Unless, seguito da un verbo alla forma affermativa sta
per if…not:
My leg is broken, I can’t stand up unless you help me.
• So/As long as e Providing/Provided (that)- (più
formale):
You can stay here as long as you keep quiet.
Alternative ad If -2
Sono spesso utilizzati senza una frase principale:
•Suppose/Supposing e What if:
Suppose you won the match, what would you do?
What if you lose your job? What will you do then?
• In case:
I’ll buy a sandwich in case I get hungry.
