Curriculum Vitae of dr. Alberto Vitali Born: 16th January 1965 in Avezzano (AQ) Address: via Pietro Maffi, 161 – 00168 Roma, Italy Phone: +39‐06‐86908654 Education and work experiences From 21 December 2001 to present: research scientist at the Institute of Chemistry of Molecular Recognition, CNR UoS Roma (formerly Centre for Chemistry of Receptors and Biologically Active Molecules). From 17 November 1997 to 16 May 1999: employed at RADIM SpA, Pomezia (production area). From 15 May 1992 to present: registered in the National Order of Biologists, No 038095, Section A. February 1990 ‐ Degree in Biology at the University "La Sapienza" of Rome. Mark: 110/110. Experimental thesis title: "Secondary metabolites from plant cell cultures of Maclura pomifera ". Supervisors Prof. Giovanni Battista Marini Bettolo and Prof. Bruno Botta. Scientific Activity Dr. Vitali has carried out his experimental thesis at the Institute of Chemistry of Molecular Recognition (ICRM), CNR ‐UoS Roma ‐ (formerly Center for Chemistry of Receptors and Biologically Active Molecules) dealing with the study of natural compounds with particular regard to flavonoids, both from a structural and biosynthetic point of view. Together with this activity he began the study of enzymes of plant origin and in particular of peroxidases, key enzymes in some biosynthetic steps of flavonoids. Subsequently it was interested in the application of such enzymes (both in crude and purified forms) as biocatalysts in studies of bioconversion of synthetic and natural substrates in order to obtain high added value molecules. For a period of 18 months he was employed at RADIM SpA (Pomezia), a private company producer of diagnostic kits, specializing in the purification of monoclonal antibodies and in their stabilization in order to optimize the performance of the kits. In 2000 he reached again the Institute of Chemistry of Molecular Recognition where, due to organizational changes of the Institute, he began the study of biologically active peptides and proteins, acquiring skills and knowledge in mass spectrometry and spectroscopy of proteins and their related techniques. In December 2001 he was appointed Researcher at ICRM. Presently, he is interested in the study of biologically active peptides in particular as modulators of cellular functions and as antimicrobial and antiviral agents. In this view he is developing peptide sequences able to interact with protein domains such as SH3 crucial for various cellular functions in order to understand the physiological roles of such peptides and also to develop new potential therapeutics. In parallel he is also interested in the peptidomic study of biological fluids, saliva firstly, and in proteomic studies of diverse pathologies approached mainly by 2DE and mass spectrometry related techniques. His scientific activity is represented by various peer‐reviewed publications and communications at national and international congresses. Teaching activity From 2002 to present, beside the research activity, dr. Alberto Vitali has been appointed as contract professor for the Catholic University of Rome in Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry. He exploits the didactic activity also as supervisor for thesis students of scientific faculties (Biological Sciences, Pharmaceutical Technology, Medical Biotechnology, Pharmacy) of Sapienza University in Rome and for PhD students of Catholic University of Rome. He had to lead and organize one post‐doc for a period of one year.
