una serie ininterrotta di imprevisti vari, e da
un singolare incontro con un altro set, quello
di "Viaggio in Italia", guidato da Rossellini e
con sede a Maiori.

Lunedì dell'Angelo o in Albis: Conca dei Marini
festeggia il suo Santo patrono, Sant'Antonio da
Padova. Nel tardo pomeriggio, la statua che lo raffigura insieme al Bambino, esce dalla chiesa in cui
è custodito - si badi: è quella di San Giovanni
Battista e non quella che porta il suo nome - e
viene portato in processione. Ma è una mini-processione perché si limita a un giro intorno alla
chiesa del Battista. Decisamente diversi sono i
festeggiamenti del 13 giugno, giorno di
Sant'Antonio.

Easter Monday: Conca de Marini celebrates its
Patron Saint, Saint Anthony of Padua. In the late
afternoon, the statue, that pictures him together
with the Child, departs from the Church where it
is kept - note: it is the Church of Saint John the
Baptist and not the one that bears his name - and
is carried in procession. But it is a mini-procession
since it ends in circling around the Church of the
Baptist. Much different are the celebrations on
June 13th for Saint Anthony.

Quei poker di Bogart
con Huston e Capote
Attori, divi, registi e sceneggiatori, sono
passati in molti per Ravello: qualcuno per
una vacanza (Orson Welles, Roman
Polanski); qualcun'altro per una love story
(vedi la Garbo con Stokovski); qualcun
altro, ancora, per motivi di lavoro. Nel
1953, infatti, Ravello si trasformò in un set
cinematografico "hollywoodiano". La troupe guidata dall'eccentrico John Huston, stabilì in
paese il suo quartier generale, per
girare "Il tesoro d'Africa", storia
d'avventura tratta dal romanzo
di James Helwik "Beat the
Devil". I giorni di lavorazione
furono a dir poco movimentati,
segnati dai capricci dei divi
Humphrey Bogart e Jennifer
Jones, da una serie ininterrotta
di imprevisti vari, e da un singolare incontro con un altro set,
quello di "Viaggio in Italia", guidato da Rossellini e con sede a Maiori. E i
giornalisti dell'epoca ribattezzarono il set
del "Tesoro dell'Africa" una ripresa-vacanza; in effetti, curiosando tra le cronache e i
cinegiornali dell'aprile 1953, esce fuori il
clima spensierato e goliardico con cui fu
realizzato il film. Un primo e divertente
aneddoto è legato al copione: Huston aveva
in mente di realizzare un film d'avventura e
convinse l'amico Bogart a comprare i diritti
d'autore del romanzo di Helwik. Poi, convinse i produttori americani, italiani, francesi e inglesi a finanziare il progetto (in
cambio doveva trovare una parte per Gina
Lollobrigida). Ottenuti i soldi e accolta l'attrice italiana nel cast, la troupe partì per
Ravello, pronta ad iniziare le riprese, sebbene mancasse del tutto una sceneggiatura.
Per fortuna di Huston, a Roma soggiornava un giovane scrittore, Truman Capote, il
quale, libero da impegni,
accettò di seguire il regista in Costiera. A causa di
un incidente d'auto intercorso a Bogart, il divo fu
trattenuto dieci giorni in
ospedale, a Napoli, il
tempo che bastò al duo
Huston-Capote per ultimare il copione del film.
Di lì a pochi giorni furono
allestite le scenografie in
piazza Duomo, a Villa
Cimbrone e a Villa
Rufolo; e perfino nell'hotel
Palumbo, dove un'intera pavimentazione di
maiolica fu sostituita in occasione di una
scena, in seguito tagliata. Tuttavia, i ritmi
di lavoro potevano dirsi tutt'altro che frenetici. Bogart, ad esempio, sul set appariva
pochissimo, intento a girare per i bar del
paese, tra un bicchiere di vino ed uno di
whisky. Per non stancarsi, Humprey prese
a noleggio un mulo: le faticose scale non si
addicevano al divo (e nemmeno a Huston,
se pensiamo che il regista si faceva trasportare in lettiga). Durante la notte, invece,
"Bogie" e John sedevano al tavolo di poker
(a farne le spese era sempre il povero
Capote), oppure chiacchieravano fino all'alba sulla terrazza dell'hotel, alternando
brindisi e risate. Ricorda Huston che, una
volta, assorto ad ammirare le luci delle barche sul mare (forse dopo aver alzato un po'
il gomito), si sporse troppo dalla ringhiera e
fece un volo di dodici metri; per fortuna
senza conseguenze. La simpatica compagnia, infine, ricevette un giorno un'insolita
visita. A pochi chilometri da Ravello, una
troupe guidata da Roberto Rossellini, era
impegnata nella realizzazione di "Viaggio in
Italia". Il clima a Maiori, però, era decisamente meno allegro. George Sanders, ad
esempio, appariva ogni giorno sempre più
triste, a causa soprattutto dei metodi
impossibili adottati da Rosselini. Dopo aver
minacciato più volte di lasciare il set, i produttori del film ritennero necessario trovare
un'immediata soluzione al problema. Per
prima cosa, fecero venire dagli Usa la
moglie di Sanders, Zsa Zsa Gabor; poi organizzarono per l'intera troupe una gita a
Ravello. L'incontro tra le due compagnie fu
memorabile: piazza Duomo e il Palumbo
divennero l'esclusivo set di un'enorme festa,
con protagonisti la Gabor, la Jones, Bogart,
Capote, Huston, Sanders, e poi comparse,
macchinisti, e chiunque si trovasse a passare di lì.

Actors, movie stars, directors, screenwriters, many of them visited
Ravello: some for a vacation (Orson Welles, Roman Polanski); some
for a love story (for example Garbo and Stokovski); others for business. In 1953 Ravello became a "Hollywood set". The troupe guided
by the eccentric John Huston, established its headquarters in town to
shoot "Beat the Devil", an adventure story based on James Helwik's
homonymous novel. The shooting days were animated by the
whims of the stars Humphrey Bogart and Jennifer Jones, by
an uninterrupted series of unexpected events, and by the
exceptional encounter with another set, Rossellini's "Viaggio
in Italia" (located in Maiori). The reporters of the time renamed the set of "Beat the Devil" a shooting-vacation; in effect
looking through the accounts and the news-reels of the April
of 1953 you can feel the goliardic climate in which the movie
was made. A first and funny anecdote is tied to the screenplay: Huston wanted to make an adventure movie and convinced his friend Bogart to buy the film rights of Helwik's novel.
Then he convinced the American, Italian, French, and English producers to finance the project (in exchange he had to find a part for
Gina Lollobrigida). Having obtained the money and having included
the Italian actress in the cast, the troupe departed for Ravello, ready
to shoot although the screenplay was totally missing. Luckily for
Huston, in Rome was living a young writer, Truman Capote, who
having no engagements accepted to follow the director to the Coast.
Bogart, after a car accident, remained in a hospital in Naples for ten
days, the time necessary for the couple Huston-Capote to finish the
screenplay. In the following days the sceneries in Piazza Duomo, Villa
Cimbrone, and Villa Rufolo were set; and even in the Hotel Palumbo
where an entire tiled floor was replaced for a scene that was never
included. Never the less the work rhythm was not at all frantic.
Bogart for example appeared very little on the set, since he was
intent in visiting the town bars, divided between a glass of wine and
a whisky one. Humphrey rented a mule in order not to tire himself:
the exhausting staircases did not suit the movie star (nor did Huston
if we think that the director used a litter for transportation).
During the night "Bogie" and John sat down at the poker table (poor
Capote always came off worst), or they chatted until dawn on the
beautiful Hotel terrace, alternating cheers and laughter. Huston
remembers that once while he was absorbed admiring the boats
lights on the
sea (maybe
after having
had to many
a drink)
leant out to
much over
the railing
and fell
down from
12 metres; luckily without any consequences. One day the pleasant
company received a unusual visit. At a few kilometres of distance, a
troupe guided by Roberto Rossellini was shooting "Viaggio in Italia".
George Sanders's mood, thanks to the impossible methods used by
Rossellini, was getting everyday worst. Since he threatened many
times to leave the set, the producers decided to find an immediate
solution. First they made Sander's wife, Zsa Zsa Gabor, come from
the States; then they organized for the entire troupe a trip to Ravello.
The encounter between the two groups was memorable: Piazza
Duomo and the Palumbo became the exclusive set of an enormous
party, starring Gabor, Jones, Bogart, Capote, Huston, Sanders, and
then film-extras and stage-hands, and anyone who was passing by.
When movie-making is involved, one knows, pleasure comes before
work.

Nel convento nacque la sfogliatella Santa Rosa, dalle sapienti
mani delle suore del monastero,
intorno ai primi anni del 700. In
onore della santa fondatrice, la
madre badessa decise di chiamare
questo gustoso dolce Santa Rosa
e ogni anno, il 30 agosto, giorno
di ricorrenza della festività della
Santa, le suore dispensavano questo dolce a tutte le famiglie del
paese.
Come raggiungere
Conca dei Marini
e come rientrare
a Ravello
Auto propria. Strada per Castiglione e,
da qui, verso Sorrento. Circa tredici i chilometri.
Bus. Il servizio di trasporto pubblico è
gestito dalla Sita. A Ravello la fermata è
in via della Repubblica. Il costo del
biglietto è di 1,30 euro. Occorre prendere
un primo bus per Amalfi e qui attendere
la coincidenza in piazza Flavio Gioia.
L'orario consigliato da Ravello è quello
delle 8,25, con arrivo ad Amalfi alle 9,00
(feriali) o alla 9,20 (festivi). La coincidenza da Amalfi per Conca dei Marini (bus
per Sorrento) è alle 9.30, con arrivo alle
9,40. L'orario consigliato per il rientro ad
Amalfi è alle 17,20, con arrivo alle 17,30.
Una volta ad Amalfi, il rientro a Ravello è
immediato, con arrivo alle 18,05.

Interesting facts
The Santa Rosa sfogliatella (a sweet made of leaves of pastry) was created in the convent from the able hands of the nuns around the first years of the eighteenth century.
In honour of the founder saint, the abbess decided to call this delicious cake Santa
Rosa and every year on the 30th of August (anniversary of the saint's festivity), the
nuns shared this sweet with all the families of the town.
How to reach Conca de Marini
and how to return to Ravello
Own car. Way to Castiglione and, from here, to Sorrento. About 13 km.
Bus. The public transportation service is run by Sita. In Ravello the bus stop is in Via
della Repubblica, after the tunnel starting in Piazza Duomo. The cost of the ticket is
of 1,30 euro. First, you need to take a bus for Amalfi and here wait for the connection. The suggested runs from Ravello to Amalfi are at 8,25 (arrival in Piazza Flavio
Gioia of Amalfi: 9,00 or 9,20 in holidays day). The connections 8bus to Sorrento)
depart for Conca de Marini at 9,30 (arrival at 9,40). The suggested timetable for the
return to Amalfi: 17.20 (arrival 17,30). Once in Amalfi, the return to Ravello is immediately (arrival 18,05).
Taxi. Cost of approximately 25 euros. The taxi stop in Ravello is in front of Villa
Rufolo. To return, if you call a car with a driver directly from Ravello, the cost could
double.
