PRESENTATION by Monica Morra
Dear colleagues, students, teachers, dearest “flamencos”…
I am going to introduce you the third edition of an event of particular importance to me, in which I believe a
lot as demonstrated by the determination not to give in to the difficulties of the moment; a manifestation of
which, even today in Spain, its value for the pureness of the intent and importance of the goals have been
recognized. This recognition is evidenced by the renewed, full availability of the Master choreographers to
join in this project, especially from the collaboration of Manuel Betanzos, who has believed in this Contest
from the beginning. Today he has chosen to assume the artistic direction, in addition to the role of the
juror.
Our idea, born in 2010, is still the same: this contest has to represent an experience of awareness,
growth, opportunity for those who participate in. Awareness in realizing what has been done, how it
has been done, especially what and how you want to do in the future, comparing with others who undertake
the same route. Growth, as you study, perform, challenge before artists whose level is undisputed, and then
returned home with no doubt something more, not only in terms of steps and movements. And, not least,
the opportunity for discussion and learning during the Contest and, for the “lucky” winners, for comparison,
in-depth study, at the most highly-rated Seville’s Academies: Academia Ados Angel Atienza, Academia
Manuel Betanzos, Academia Alicia Marquez.
Therefore, we have the same intentions but also something new, since from the initial experiences we have
learned a lot and we want to offer more and more.
To begin with, we have assumed an international line: we are opening the Contest to people born and
resident in every nation.
The second new feature is the inclusion of new categories and subcategories.
There is still the category Students, subdivided in Juniors (underage children) and Seniors, where
neither a specific number of years of study nor a particular experience of performing on stage, therefore a
2
professional one, are required. In this category we will accept those promising, talented students, studying
baile flamenco with commitment, who would like to enjoy the opportunity of studying more, and have the
abilities to sustain a dance lesson of basic level. The novelty concerning this category is expressed by the
fact that all those who manage to enter the semifinal will participate in the exhibition on stage
regardless of their admission to the final. The finalists selected will perform on stage with their own
identification number as they will access to prizes, while the semifinalists, although cannot access the
awards, will still be able to complete their experience till the end.
News also as regards Soloists category: it has been decided to divide it into two subcategories: “In
progress” Soloists, i.e. those who for the first time or a short one face a solo baile; Professional
Soloists, dedicated to those who have committed themselves to for longest time, even professionally. This
will give way to the former to experiment without any fear of comparison with the latter, who have by far
more experience. As for the awards of the categories Students and Soloists this year, in addition to the
award in scholarship, there is also a partial reimbursement of expenses.
Back to the categories, we added a new one dedicated to Groups. Further divisions between Schools and
Academies’ Groups and Professional Groups and Companies, will enable everyone to display their
choreographic output and be properly evaluated, taking into account the experiences and goals of each one.
For this category, cash prizes for the choreographer and scholarship at Seville’s Academies for
each member of the Group winner have been provided.
Creating this new category dedicated to the choreography, we have chosen to invite a juror needless of any
introduction, as an artist of great prestige: Rafaela Carrasco.
As for the timing, the days of the Contest will always be four, but the work will be organized in such a way
to allow the participation to those who could not stay in Turin for the entire duration of the Contest. As
usual, we will present the Flamenco Puro Festival’s shows, now in its 4th edition, which will host big
names of Flamenco today, with whom – as usual - Flamenco workshops will be organized. Therefore, we
expect four days of intense experience, full of flamenco sharing . A gustito. 
I remind you, as you will read the regulations of the Competition, in order that each category may compete,
we need a minimum number of registrations. As the entire event may be feasible, we have given a deadline,
i.e. a closing date for applications, 15th March 2013. If on the expiry of the terms of entries we do not
reach a sufficient number of participants to be able to support the management, we will have reluctantly to
give up.
However, we are terribly optimistic, maybe a little bit crazy, as someone friendly defines us , but the
project is so wonderful that we hope to stand up this particular economic time that affects everyone.
In conclusion, let me remind you that the regulations, the forms of registrations, and all the information,
also into Italian and Spanish versions, will be updated on our web site www.arteyflamenco.it - see
the pages dedicated to the Festival and the Competition. Please, do not be scared by the formality of
the registration process whose sole purpose is to ensure the most efficient organization. For this reason and
to assure us as soon as possible the feasibility of the event, allowing us time to organize more comfortably,
we ask you to proceed with the registration in good time, and not wait until the last days.
Despite the experience gained in the previous editions, this event continues to be a novelty, for you as for
us, as the only one of its kind outside Spain and its highly delicate environment. We are aware of the
possibility of making a few mistakes but, as I did then, I promise you on my behalf, on behalf of my staff,
and of the Masters jurors, the usual honesty, fairness, transparence, enthusiasm.

Article 4. How to participate – SOLOISTS CATEGORY
4/1. - SOLOISTS PRELIMINARY phase – Friday, 12th April
4/1 a) PRELIMINARY phase will consist of a flamenco dance lesson, INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED
level, which will be held by the Masters of Jury.

4/2. - SOLOISTS SEMIFINAL phase – Friday, 12th April 2013
4/2 a) Candidates who have passed Preliminary phase will access to Semifinals.
4/2 b) At the SEMIFINAL candidates will display a “solo” baile, lasting up to 6 minutes, of a
palo to be chosen from among: Alegrias, Soleà, Soleà por Buleria, Seguiriya, Taranto,
Tientos, Caña.
4/2 c) Candidates have to perform a “solo” with guitar and live cante . Candidates have the right
to perform with a guitar player and a cantaòr of their own choice, in that case at the expense of
the candidates. On the contrary, candidates will be accompanied by musicians (guitarists and
cantaòr/es) at their own disposal, paid by the Organizer of the Contest. Each candidate has the
opportunity of making use of them, from a minimum of ten minutes up to a maximum execution
time (to be determined at the beginning of the Contest), for rehearsal and agreements concerning
the baile structure. Since the Jurors’ concern is the evaluation of talent and artistic possibilities of
candidates and not a strict judgment of the choreographies presented, given also the limited range
of time at one’s disposal for rehearsal, an excessive choreographic research together with a
complex structure of baile are not required, that would need much longer rehearsal. Traditional
structure and style of “solo” are thereby required. Baile may be arranged by the candidate
him/herself, or by a choreographer chosen by him/her. Should this be the case, the name of the
choreographer would not be mentioned during the show, nor be indicated on the Jurors’ tabs.
4/2 d) During the Semifinal phase, candidates will carry out their performance with studio
apparel.

Gala of 2013 Flamenco Puro Festival. At the end of the Show the Jury, with careful evaluation of
aptitudes, technical, interpretative skills demonstrated by the competitors, will nominate and
award, with final judgment, the winners of International Competition of Baile Flamenco “Ciudad de
