L’Opera è la trasposizione di un lavoro teatrale
che V. Sardou scrisse per Sarah Bernardt,
grandissima attrice della Bella Epoque.
La storia si svolge a metà del 1800 nella Roma
papalina. Floria Tosca, bellissima e
famosissima cantante, è l’amante molto gelosa
di Mario Cavaradossi, pittore.
This opera is based on a pièce that V. Sardou
wrote for Sarah Bernardt,
a Belle Epoque great and famous actress.
The story takes place in the mid-1880s in papal
Rome. Floria Tosca, a very beautiful
and good singer, is the very jealous mistress of
Mario Cavaradossi, a painter.
Il potentissimo Capo della Polizia, Scarpia,
desidera Tosca che lo respinge.
Ma quando Mario viene condannato a morte
per aver aiutato un amico, prigioniero politico
evaso dal carcere, Tosca deve supplicare
Scarpia, per salvare il suo Amore. Scarpia
non si lascia scappare l’occasione e propone
la libertà di Mario in cambio di una notte
d’amore con lei
At the same time Tosca is lusted after by Scarpia,
a very powerful Police Chief, who is rejected by
her. But when Mario is sentenced to death for
having helped a friend, a political prisoner who
had escaped from prison, Tosca is forced to
implore
Scarpia to save the man she loves. Scarpia
takes this opportunity to exact one night of
passion from her in exchange for Mario’s release
Tosca finge di accettare ma quando Scarpia tenta
di abbracciarla dopo aver scritto un salvacondotto
per se e per Mario, lo accoltella a morte.
Ma Scarpia aveva dato segretamente ordine di
fucilare comunque Mario e quanto Tosca lo
raggiunge pronta a fuggire con lui, se lo vede
morire tra le braccia. Disperata, si getta dal
torrione di Castel S. Angelo, dove l’ultima scena si
svolge
Tosca pretends to accept the bargain, but, when
Scarpia tries to embrace her after signing a safeconduct for both, stabs him and kills him. But
Scarpia had given order to shoot Mario anyway
and when Tosca joins him in order to escape
together, can only watch him die in her arms.
In despair, she throws herself down from the big
tower of Castel Sant’Angelo.
