Il Gujarat
Per ben due volte ho dovuto rinunciare a recarmi in questo Stato indiano del nord ovest. La prima fu per il
dilagare della peste diffusa dai topi, la seconda per il disastroso terremoto del gennaio 2001 (7.9 scala
Richter) che uccise 20.000 persone e ne ferì oltre160.000. Ma, appena la vita riprese normalmente volai ad
Allahabad, la vecchia capitale e iniziai la mia “esplorazione”. Tra le innumerevoli destinazioni possibili
dell’India, il Gujarat è una delle meno visitate. Solo negli ultimi anni ha iniziato ad avere un discreto flusso
di turisti. Personalmente, ritengo questa destinazione “fantastica”! Iniziando dai favolosi “mille templi”
jain di Palitana dove ogni mattino all’alba migliaia di pellegrini giunti da tutto il Paese scalano la collina
sacra percorrendo oltre 5000 gradini, alle spiagge dell’ex colonia portoghese di Diu, popolate da centinaia
di pescatori, al Parco di Sasan Gir che custodisce gli ultimi esemplari al mondo di leoni asiatici. Dalla visita
al luogo di nascita di Gandhi e al suo ashram, al deserto salato del Kuch dove s’incontrano asini selvatici
di una razza particolarissima. Dal Porto di Dwarka che si affaccia sul mare Arabico e dove si possono
ammirare stupendi templi (ora ricostruiti dopo il cataclisma) all’incontro coi pastori nomadi Rabari che
spaziano tra le sabbie del deserto di Thar al confine col Rajasthan e col Sind a ridosso del Pakistan, è
difficile dire cosa sia più affascinante. Per non parlare della zona di nord ovest dove si possono ammirare
quelle spettacolari riserve idriche, veri capolavori architettonici e artistici che vanno sotto il nome di
“Bauli”: Oppure dell’artigianato locale fra cui spicca l’industria tessile artigianale dei sari più lussuosi di
tutta l’India che possono costare anche 15/20 mila euro. Terra di abili commercianti, allevatori e agricoltori,
il Gujarat presenta oggi anche grandi zone industriali che hanno la punta di diamante nella produzione
delle straordinarie stoffe ricamate dalle popolazioni tribali secondo la tecnica del “mirror work”, Inoltre, è
anche uno dei principali centri mondiali per il commercio dei diamanti. Nel mio viaggio ho avuto la grande
fortuna d’incontrare una delegazione di alte personalità religiose venute a Dwarka per inaugurare il
tempio jain dopo la sua ricostruzione dai danni del terremoto. Per me che ,per decenni, anche grazie alla
collaborazione con l’ufficio del turismo indiano, ho avuto l’opportunità di visitare il “sub-continente” nelle
zone più remote, la “scoperta” del Gujarat è stata una piacevolissima e indimenticabile sorpresa. Spero in
futuro di poter tornare da quelle parti che comunque, ancora oggi, conservano un fascino indescrivibile
per l’autenticità della gente e per la varietà estrema del territorio. Eccovi la mia presentazione e buona
visione.
The Gujarat
Twice I had to give a go in this Indian state's northwest. The first was for the spread of the
plague spread by rats, the second for the disastrous earthquake of January 2001 (7.9
Richter scale) that killed 20,000 people and injured oltre160.000. But, as soon as life
returned normally flew at Allahabad, the old capital and started my "exploration". Among
the many possible destinations of India, Gujarat is one of the least visited. Only in recent
years has started to have a decent flow of tourists. Personally, I think this destination
"fantastic"! Starting from the fabulous "thousand temples" jain Palitana where every
morning at dawn thousands of pilgrims from all over the country climb the sacred hill
covering over 5000 steps to the beaches of the former Portuguese colony of Diu, populated
by hundreds of fishermen, to Sasan Gir park which houses the last surviving Asiatic lions in
the world. From the visit to the birthplace of Gandhi and his ashram, the salt desert of
Kuch where they meet wild asses of a very special breed. From the Port of Dwarka
overlooking the Arabian sea and where you can see beautiful temples (now rebuilt after the
cataclysm) meeting with nomadic herders Rabari ranging in the sands of the Thar desert
near the border with Rajasthan and Sind with the close of the Pakistan, it is difficult to say
what is most fascinating. Not to mention the area of north west where you can admire the
spectacular water reserves, real architectural and artistic masterpieces that go under the
name of "Trunks": Or local handicrafts among which the textile crafts of the most luxurious
saris across India that can cost 15-20 thousand euro. Land of skilled tradesmen, Farmer,
Gujarat has today also large industrial areas that have the cutting edge in the production of
unique embroidered fabrics from tribal people using the technique of "mirror work" In
addition, it is also one of the leading centers in the world for the diamond trade. In my
journey I had the great fortune to meet a delegation of religious dignitaries came to
Dwarka to inaugurate the jain temple after its reconstruction from the earthquake damage.
For me that, for decades, thanks to the collaboration with the Office of Indian tourism, I
had the opportunity to visit the "sub-continent" in remote areas, the "discovery" of Gujarat
has been a pleasant and memorable surprise . I hope to be able to return to those parts
that still, even today, retain a charm for the authenticity of the people and for the extreme
