Fermi in public
Collaboration papers
 Maintaining public data and analysis tools is worth the effort
 “Prize-winning” science (2011 AAS HEAD Rossi Prize, 2012 APS
Panofsky Prize)
 Effective outreach program (www.nasa.gov/fermi/ + app Fermi Sky)

Supporting science with event level analysis
 Current: completing extensive validation and study of
systematic uncertainties
 Next generation: redesigning event reconstruction and
background rejection to enhance science potential
– new TKR recon  Tree vs multiple tracks recon,
independent from CAL recon  better Point Spread
Function
– new CAL recon  clustering, extend to 2 TeV
– new ACD recon  improved and more flexible pointing to
TKR and CAL, background rejection
– Pile-up events tagging (TKR, CAL, ACD)  ghost removal
– New background rejection  multiple classes of events to
serve different science goals

Super Novae Remnants Status
arXiv:1201.0988
…. and prospects
 measure how CR acceleration depends on age and environment

Gigantic flare from the Crab Nebula
A. Abdo et al., Science 331, 739 (2011).
From 30 to 100 times brighter than usual. Detected in radio but not detected
by Chandra, even if during the (second) big flare it was pointing the Crab
