M. Campanella - TNC 2001 - Antalya - May 2001
Reasons
More capacity (factor of 20), new services
(QoS, IPv6,…), simplification, exploit fibers
Key elements
- GPoPs in users’ or neutral premise
- GPoP central to MANs and Regional
networks, high speed interconnects
- unitary model
- State cofinancing at 50%
- Ready for access to all student population
- Full support to european test activities
- Ready for mediterranean access
- data link agnostic (use of l, SDH, ATM, GbE )

Items to follow closely
Although DWDM Gb speed in the backbone is a reality,
speed in the last mile might be slower:
- north better served than south
- larger cities cabled, not countries
LANs are slow to evolve and only a small percentage is
ready for QoS
Users’ site frequent misconfigurations
DWDM provider infrastructure is new
need to deal with multiple service providers and dark fibers
