Amerigo Restucci, Rector
Welcome to the Università Iuav di Venezia
The Iuav is a small university with an enrolment of
approximately 6200 students. The number of students is
limited to guarantee the quality of education offered. The
academic staff includes 545 professors, 192 of which are
tenured or tenure-tracked (67 full professors, 92 associate
professors and 33 researchers) and 5 non-tenured
extraordinary professors. Highly acclaimed professors,
different kinds of expertise (professional, research), from over
thirty countries of the world.
What makes the Iuav special is the emphasis it places on
project-based learning. It is the only university in Italy
entirely devoted to teaching the planning and design of
everything related to the spaces and environments in which
we live: buildings, cities and landscapes; objects of daily use
and graphics; cultural, theatrical and multimedia events.
The Iuav has three faculties – Architecture, Regional
Planning, and Arts and Design –, all of which have grown out
of the original School of Architecture (founded in Venice in
1926). In recent years the Iuav has implemented an unique
experiment in “project-based learning” that is the first of its
kind in Italy. Theory and technique are integrated with
hands-on training that spans the entire planning and design
process, from the conception of an idea all the way through
to its realisation.
Studying at the Iuav means living in an environment that is
open to what is happening throughout the world. It means
coming face-to-face with authoritative voices in the fields of
architecture, regional planning, arts and design.

Students with EU citizenship do not need study visas and are
not required to apply for a permit to stay in Italy. They must,
however, register with the Anagrafe (registry office) in the
municipality in which they intend to establish residency, in

International students from non-EU countries
All non-EU students must have a study visa issued by a
competent Italian diplomatic authority in their country of
residence prior to entering Italy. Within 8 days after arriving
in Italy, non-EU students must apply for a residency permit
for the purpose of study. The permits are issued by the
Questura - Ufficio Stranieri (the local police station) in the
city in which the student intends to establish residence. NonEU students who have entered Italy without a regular entry

The new European Health Insurance Card is a benefit to
European citizens who residency temporarily in another
member state. The Card gives access to immediate necessary
care under the same conditions as nationals of that country.
It will replace the paper forms currently in use, such as the
E111 for short stays or holidays, or the E128 for study. Students
from EU countries should request the Health Insurance Card
from their local health authorities. They should note that this
Card is being introduced progressively in different countries
and that they may still be issued an E111 or E128 under the
previous system.
Non-EU citizens are required to take out private health
insurance before leaving their home country and to obtain a
consular declaration regarding its validity in Italy.
